Anyone following the Olympics?
Jump to: Newest in thread
I've been watching it when I can. I cried watching the cycling yesterday.
I'd love to be there giving my support. I really feel for Japan and the athletes, to have to go through it without spectators to boost their morale and recoup some of the heavy investment they have all made.

Brilliant love it.
Taekwondo was brilliant so fast.
Rowing
Swimming
Cycling
Gymnastics
Hockey.
I was a gamesmaker at London 2012 and look back on it with such fond memories.
After such a shit year and a half the whole world needs something to cheer us up and the Olympics is the greatest show on earth.
Obviously adjustments have been made to accommodate the pandemic and the fact it's even going ahead is a miracle.
Let's get behind the athletes and think about something that's no covid for a change. |

Read this afternoon the IOC sold UK TV rights to Discovery+ so all the stuff bbc normally would have access to is now £7pm on Discovery.
Massively disappointed but at least some stuff is still on bbc |

Do you know if any equestrian events will be on BBC (either live or on iPlayer?) We only have Freeview, no Sky/cable etc. |

"I want to watch the equestrian events but seems not to even be on the Red Button
There was the dressage event on earlier today
Which channel, please?"
Yes I'd like to know which channel as I was really looking forward to watching them....we got 5 mins on the Red button of Charlotte Dujardin dressage on her horse 'Pumpkin'...they did really well too and are in the individuals final. |

Looks like discovery bought the rights so bbc is limited to what it can show. |

The BBC appear to be intent on extracting as much money from their customer base (i.e. the UK population, including pensioners that have minimal contact outside of their home environments), paying astronomical salaries to their presenters / pundits / celebrities and delivering minimal service to their viewers.
The Olympics' television rights were announced in 2016 and the BBC failed to win the bid against the US Discovery channel. The BBC is, therefore, allowed to live broadcast only 2 sports simultaneously (max 200 hours, I think) with the remainder filled in with inane fill-inn (step forward Claire Balding)
So, the Olympics are now, effectively, behind a paywall run by SKY.
Echoes of BBC Formula 1 and the reason why I will never pay a single penny to the BBC or SKY (see my first paragraph).
If you subscribe to SKY then I suggest that you add up the basic subscription, HD component. sports component, cinema etc. and I'll put a £1 bet on it being in excess of £500 per annum.
Plus you need to pay for a television license fee.
TBH there are far better ways of spending your hard earned money.
The BBC and SKY are financial parasites preying on people that simply accept their agenda.

It's a very different Olympics. No spectators and family members. I am looking forward to the Athletics but with an empty stadium it will be strange. Especially the various finals. I wish the athletes well. 5 year wait for the chance to win an Olympic medal ( plus trying to continue to test negative for COVID). Lots of effort has gone in. |

Indeed. I had intended to be in Japan for the Olympics this year (my third visit) but corporate sponsorship appear to over-ride public health measures so I'm stuck in the UK with no interest in watching the BBC (****** crap coverage) or Discovery (pay-to-view) channel.
Once the current SARS-CoV-2 restrictions allow worldwide travel, I'll be back to Japan as it is one of the most amazing countries to visit.

"Anyone else watching the triathlon?
Yep. Some craziness at the start!
I've raced in close to 100 triathlons and watched probably twice that.
I've never ever seen a start like that!"
The boats seemed to be dangerously close for the whole swim! I'm going to have to stop watching soon as I have work tomorrow |

Watching the men’s triathlon now. I did a load of sprint distance triathlons in my late 20s/early 30s. This is making me want to do an Olympic distance one or a half iron man. |

I'd like to try an adapted tri but I'd need a handcycle (definitely) and preferably a road racing chair. I'm also trying to get a custom basketball chair Disability sport is fucking expensive AB basketball - you need a court, a ball and a pair of trainers (Asdas will do). For the wheelchair sport, you need a wheelchair starting at about £1000 for a very basic, generic one, up to £3-4k for a bespoke sized one...... |

I’ve watched wheelchair rugby (which, for the record is the most brutal sport I’ve ever seen)
The chairs look really expensive. Same for any wheelchair sport. |

I want to try wheelchair rugby too. They use chairs pretty similar to basketball, they just have spoke covers as standard and bigger leg protection areas at the front. They'd be a similar price, £1k for an absolute bare basic upto £3-4k for bespoke. If playing competitively, you need bespoke.... |

They're covering as much as they are allowed to. They don't have the rights to show everything. Discovery do and you have to pay for it. |

It’s the streaming rights that have been sold… so the bbc can’t do the “all sports thing behind the red button” that they have perfected since London 2012…
Basically it is a cash grab by the IOC! Can’t blame the bbc for that…. |

It’s a cash grab because there are no physical spectators. They have to recoup the cost of putting the event on. It doesn’t just happen for free. No spectators so there’s only a fraction of the merchandising opportunities etc. |

Actually it’s not…..
The pan European streaming right were sold in 2015 to discovery …. They then sub licensed the uk rights back to the BBC for Rio 2016…..
Now there are things I learned today… for anyone who has Eurosport, which is free on sky basic I think… they have put on extra channels so you can see it all…
Eurosport 3 to Eurosport 9 are on sky channels 983 to 989, BT channels 401 to 407, and virgin channels 537 to 543 |

Tom Pidcock was awesome today and just we might not of seen that as GB didn’t have a spot for mtb. Was only there because I think the Romanians on the last qualifying race didn’t make a time slot so that opened up the spot for Tom.

"Gutted for Lauren Williams there. Hard to lose it so late on "
She fought the good fight but a rookie error cost her gold, she will learn from it.
She should have just run around the ring and wasted time she had momentum and stopped it with playing her card.
Still that's taking nothing away from an amazing achievement.
Such a fast sport you can't relax for a second! |

But it's not though is it because it will affect some more than others. Some play off the buzz of the crowd, some look for that o ne face in the crowd to give them that little boost. Its a big change to compete at such a major event with next to no crowd. It can fuck with your head. |

Yup of course it can but if you want to be crowned best in the world at your particular event you have to be prepared to deal with any situation thrown at you.
The athletes have known for months that crowds would be virtually non existent.
So it's up to them to prepare for this scenario.
Of course it's not how anyone wants to race or compete but it is what it is.
I'm more pissed off by the terrible coverage, the camera work on the triathlon was shocking. |

I love watching the Olympics, it’s like a two week long edition of TransWorld Sport, that great Saturday morning digest programme that used to cover weird and wonderful sports from all around the world.
I normally would have no interest in triathlon , archery, fencing or surfing but put it into a short world competition and I love it ! |

This has been answered on the thread a few times. They are limited to what they can show due to not owning streaming rights. Discovery won them. |
