I had sky an went over to virgin, it wasn't just the BB kept failing or going slow it was the messing about they gave you when you rang them up, I'd sit there with steam coming out my ears for ages trying to get it working, anyway I'm back with sky now and had no problems in 2yrs.
And before you ask , no I don't work for sky lol.
Hope its fixed soon. |

I know some people hate them but...
We are with BT, and apart from a dodgy hub to start with, our line has been faultless, and we have had no problems with speed etc.
Much of the problem with your interwebby fing is down to the cable in the ground, if thats crap you will always have problems, no matter who you are with.
Then, its down to how good their customer service is, and again, our experience of BT is good.
I cant see us changing, just waiting for Infinity to be available in this area now!! |

Give Richard a ring and ask him if mr Bolt can run round and have a look at it for you?
Failing that - get Dr Who to take you back in time to when you didn't have virgin!!
Some amazing staff at virgin it has to be said!! |

Must admit they have been good. When we have phoned up because the internet has gone done it's been sorted in no time.
Unlike talk talk who my mums with. Shes a pensioner and disabled.
Has been 4 months with no phone. All family have rang them non stop and keep getting fobbed off.
Would be nice to talk to someone who spoke English and could be bothered.
Engine came out and sat in her living room yacking then said he had no idea |

This is strange. Been with sky for 2 years and it was problem after problem. I. Had enough and called them to come and collect all their installation. I didn't care about any cancellation policy. Went to virgin for 3 years now and the internet run like a formula 1 car. Even better to use my dish to hickjack in sky tv and watch all for free... |

Been with Virgin (NTL) forever and never had any major problems, to be honest.
Worked in IT for years though, so can usually bypass the foreign call centres and get to speak to someone that knows what they're doing if it's something I can't fix myself.
Their all-in-on hubs are way more problematic than stand alone internet though, if our neighbours experiences are anything to go by.
Our neighbours both sides are with Virgin, so we either use someone else's if ours is down or all of us are affected and it's to do with the line. |

No worries, are you on ADSL or cable? Checking the main southampton exchange status there are no reports of major issues so if they know what the issue is it is probably local to your local telephone cabinet I'd imagine |

If you're moving soon and want to know what services you can get google 'Sam knows broadband checker' punch in the post code of the property and it will give you all the info on the local exchange and what services will be available to you |

I've heard that Virgin broadband is supposed to be very good.
I've also the impression though that if you do get any problems with a Virgin home media service then you're in for it.
All due to the NTL Hell days and that's the reason I would not choose them. |

Ok, so it sounds you've got FTTE(fibre to the exchange). Do you know is the bit from there to your house still copper? If so copper line broadband services is notorious for having issues and there could be multiple causes. Easiest way to figure what you have is by the type of hub/router you have or looking where your phone socket is and seeing whether you have a ADSL filter attached with lines coming out of it splitting the phone and the router? |

more north lincs than mids! |
Virgin Media here and barely any issues. Internet runs like a dream. 2 PC's, an xbox and several other things run from it and never any loss of service.
Only once we had a problem and the power pack to our router stopped working. Had a whole new router a few days later.
Now have a super hub with Tivo etc and definitely worth the money for us.
Hope you get it sorted soon OP |

We have been with Virgin(Blueyonder when joined) For about 10 years. Only ever had 2 issues with Internet and had 2 tv boxes exchanged(last 3 years had 3 rooms with boxes in house) Both times had problems with Internet was during the free speed upgrades the have done. |

"I'm really lucky. Only ever had Virgin broadband and only problem I had was when the new superhub was fitted a few months ago, but this was because we needed a new cable from the ground to house."
Wonder if these superhubs are the problem?
That's when ours started dropping out. |

Well out of about 3 months with virgin we've had prob a quarter of that with no service. The people on the phone and the engineers have been great. But we still have problems so will never use them again |

Not had many problems with them apart from the odd cable box needing replaced or the odd call to report internet not working over the last few years. Recently had Tivo installed along with the superhub and it does seem to take longer to boot up and kick in when PC is starting up, however, when it does start, it's been fine I've had no issues |

That's completely unexceptable for a broadband service, in my personal dealings with Virgin I have found them to be very good and it sounds like you have just been unlucky, but I have also heard stories that since the widely advertised of doubling their speeds that alot of their cable is oversubscribed, thus causing overloading and overheating which will affect the service. You should perhaps consider threatening to get Ofcom involved if they don't get it sorted once and for all. |

The super hubs are known to be bad.
Have you got an old router around you can use?
What to do is to enable modem only mode on the superhub and cable that to an old router.
If you Google superhub modem mode you should get some how tools but it's quite easy.
Also... Is it the wireless dropping or does it drop when you are cabled to the superhub? If the latter then it's a network problem with virgin. If the former could be the superhub and modem mode will probably fix that
Also mind that wifi operates on a few channels... If there is interference from other wifi or dect phones that will cut you off. You can try changing channels.
I have an app on my android phone that scans and tells me what the best channel to use is in my house... Although we live on the end of a terrace so not so much around us.
I'm in telecoms too... Again feel free to pm if you need any more help as don't always check back for forums
Good luck Steve |
