I've been reminiscing with my old dad..he's 80. Talking about my Nan.
They were Roman Catholic...there were 11 kids. No mod cons.
Washing needs doing....
then it was down to the wash-house which was shared with 4 other woman.
I'm feeling very fond of my washing machine right now
What mod con can't you do without? |

Defo air con in the car, after a 1.5hr each way trip to Heathrow with the thermometer indicating around 32 deg C outside. Not sure I'd have survived it without air. |

"Washing machine must be close to the top of the list but we'd all be up the creek without electricity. My mum was 12 before she lived in a house electricity"
I was thinking just how hard women had it!
Times were hard |

My grandmother had it really tough, six children, an outside toilet that she literally had to dig every six weeks, gas lighting and no hot running water. |

Reminds me of when I was a kid and my mum said to my great gran, she's got to do the washing when we get back. My great gran said “washing you don’t know what the word means, back in my day it took us a whole day…” |

My Grandad was brought up with similar. Outside cold tap only; his mother died when he was 2 so only Dad to do everything on a labourers wage, for 3 children. No electricity, only the heat of a range in the front room and open fires, shared outside loo etc. No wonder he joined the Army at 14! |

She didn't know any different but I know she did find it very, very difficult. They lived in a very isolated place and money was very tight. I'm very glad to have been born when I was |

I think my underfloor heating its been a gamechanger in my home, no hotspots/cold spots just a perfect ambient temp. Being a victorian era home its made a huge difference |

I once lived for five years in a remote village with no main electric, heating or running water ! So now I'd say a good music system - can't imagine life without music. |

"Running water that is tested to ensure it's safe enough to drink
It is so distressing to see this isn't available to all.
Definitely decent water!"
There was a health scare re our water supply when I was in secondary school and we had to hard boil all our water for awhile. It was eye opening. |
