It’s been bugging me. Why is it ‘Swinging’ ? What’s the etymology. I’ve been Googling and it’s not that clear. Anyone know why it’s Swinging and Swingers?

One for the geeks.

In the 60s. Although it is unlikely that swingers in the swinging sixties identified as such, because swinging in the swinging sixties could refer to lots of different activities that were taking place at the time of the “sexual revolution” and not just sex. I should imagine that those that carried on the practice of “freelove” from this era became known as swingers by those that had given up or “moved on” to the next “craze”

Bit like “boomers” or “ravers” or whatever, the tag sticks I guess? That would be my best guess. But the origin is centred around the sexual revolution which occurred in what is commonly called “the swinging sixties” for all kinds of reasons

Some speculation that it might go back even further to WW2 USAF.

I suppose it is more catchy than ‘fucking about”.

Does go back to ww2 and when American USAF asked friends to look after their wives when the went to war.

But it goes further back to the Romans and the Greeks and their orgies. It was only Christianity and the rise of the church that put a damper on it.

I meant the word. Like I’m sure Captain Caveman was busy. Actually I’ve always imagined The Flintstones must have has a bit of Betty and Wilma action.
