After yesterdays upset, I had no doubt that people would use the loss to resort to racism. Anyone that does this can go fuck themselves. The amount of crap I have seen on social media is disgusting. I'm ashamed to call myself english right now. Its not on!

It’s the views of a small group of very small minded individuals, they do not represent the views or attitudes of our great nation.

Do yourself a favour and abandon social media if you can, it’s generally crap and will do you no good.

I did and would never go back

"Will we ever live in a racist free society? "

Racist free? No. It is impossible to achieve because there will always be those that will hate due to race, on all sides of it.

We will however slowly head towards it, but never truely achieve it.

Go and see the racism in Russia.

Some black football players have armed guards and a few are bought to training by helicopter for their own safety.

Same in Bosnia it's a completely different world to here.

We have an actual outspoken racist as priminister elected with a whopping majority. I can’t think of another country in Europe that has that now or has had in a very long time. Our Royal family and the press that prop them up have just driven a family member out of the country for the colour of her skin.

I’m not sure we can reasonably claim to be tolerant and our diversity mostly comes from literally stealing entire countries from other people.

I hear a lot “it’s a small minority” ,a small minority in every part of the country. That equates to quite a few. I’m pretty confident most people of colour have been racially abused through out their life time. It doesn’t seem very small then. It was only the other week some guy messaged me on here calling me monkey features. It’s rife, just because you don’t see it or hear of it it happens. But if I lived worrying about these people I would forever be in the shadows…. I think not!!

Doesn't matter the size of the majority or the minority or whatever nation race, colour or creed, racism is racism and disgusting in whatever form it takes, alas its a society thing ingrained from generation's past to current. Unless society changes as one, you'll never stamp out racism...we just hope that today's course of history will give hope to our children and children's children that we can live without hate of any form

Racism is a tool used to hurt someone. People will never stop wanting to hurt others and therefore racism will never end as long as words can be used to hurt someone. Being a ginger kid with glasses I was mercilessly bullied but I eventually refused to let it hurt me. I'm proud of who I am and I won't apologise for it. These players should be proud of themselves too. Haters will always hate, education won't help these people, they are weak and hating is the tool they use to put themselves above others.

Racism will never go away, people like to be noticed and this is just one way for them to feel important enough to be spoke about.

Make the social media outlets responsible for what goes on their platforms and that will stop a lot of the comments instantly.

Fine them for every comment that gets through their screening processes.

Only then will comments from that source at least be sorted.

This is the only media outlet I use , I guarantee if a racist comment was made in here the account would be gone instantly and rightly so.

I'm not sure this can be done on a social media platform like twitter or facebook, that has millions of users. This site isnt that well known and its not used by a lot of people, so its easier to monitor comments and ban accounts. But I agree more needs to be done!

It's horrible that players get racially abused. To answer your question, I don't think we will ever reach a racism free society. It's not just a British thing. Racism exists in all societies. Racists come in all colours, shapes, sizes and gender. It's just a human tribal mentality. It shows up in different ways for different people.

At the same time, I would advice you to take what you see on social media with a pinch of salt. They don't represent the regular society. Most "normal people" I know have stopped using them. Even if they have accounts, they don't really post much. The ones left are the people with extreme views. It is still bad. But not as bad as it looks. I have been to other countries. As an immigrant myself, I can say that the UK is one of the most welcoming countries I have been to.

I am too tired to be disappointed.. it was all so predictable!!!

I am more pissed off at the people who came out and spouted the predictable shit about racism blah blah who 4 weeks ago refused to call out people booing taking the knee….

Almost every black football fan who has been to games can tell stories of being racially abused.. and if it’s like that for me I hate to see what players go through…

Call out the media… call out the politicians…

Over the last few years people seemed to be more emboldened to be more openly.. well… you fill in the rest!

when we have a home secretary who openly says that people are 'entitled' to abuse the england football team by booing them while they make a moral stand against racism in the game, then it is, unfortunately, of very little surprise when racists abuse the players. she is totally repugnant and absolutely morally bankrupt.

Some of them..

And within that there's another valid debate as to whether they are..

As others have said when Saka missed the pen we both looked at each other and I said the brain-deads will be on social media spouting bile now..

It was sadly inevitable but it's not all who support the team..

It's a society issue, when there's a parish councillor under arrest as we speak for racially motivated hate crime over his actions last night and when we have a majority in the country happy to put into the highest office of the land a man who has a record of casual racism we have an inherent problem..

I called it out as soon as they missed the penalties, because it’s happened before.

The racial abuse was predicted, that should speak volumes.

It seems that people of colour have to go out of their own way just to be considered equals and it’s horrible that we live in that kind of society.

I’m tired of the constant excuses: “Oh it’s a small minority” “Not everyone is like that”

Ok how much is a minority? 30? 100? 500? 2000?

It’s good to see lots of companies calling it out but things needs to change.

It’s a small minority, and not representative of the majority of the population until you see people like Andrew Bone, a manager at Savills get suspended from his job and referred to the police subject to investigation. It’s a small minority until you stop laughing at the vile things our prime minister and his Conservative cronies laugh about in private. When you think about what he is happy to say in public, you can only wince at the thought of their private banter.

If I post a link to a copy written game, Twitter come down on me. If I post a Covid conspiracy, Twitter flags it. If I post 25 monkey emojis at someone, Twitter sees no issue.

I’m using Twitter as an example because I did read today that they have deleted 1000 inappropriate tweets in the last 24 hours but why has it taken so long

The fact that so many people saw it coming is so depressing…. The fact that social media to react is as depressing.

I have to say I like using Twitter… but I shut it down last night because we all knew what was about to happen

"A few years ago I think it was in Bulgaria I remember Raheem Sterling and Danny Rose we’re subjected to monkeys chants .Both players quite rightly felt that stronger sanctions should be taken by UEFA and we’re fairly active on social media and television to say so.Last night and today our so called fans took to social media to subject 3 black players to racist abuse for missing penalties. Our

press and social media are very quick to call out other countries yet we are as bad as them. I don’t understand why in football we boo a countries national anthem yet in rugby we don’t.

-----

Lack of discipline and control over fans in football! "

It's not about having control over people, it's about leading by example and showing people the right way to behave.

My experience of being in a rugby crowd, the fans will not tolerate disrespect from each other.

I disagree, I've travelled a fair bit around Europe as well as spoken to many black people who live all across the continent. England is on the low end. We have some pretty deep racial issues, we just dress it up in British politeness.

As a Welshman, I absolutely agree with you. The team made England proud, but as usual, let down by the fans.

Some of them..

And within that there's another valid debate as to whether they are..

As others have said when Saka missed the pen we both looked at each other and I said the brain-deads will be on social media spouting bile now..

It was sadly inevitable but it's not all who support the team..

It's a society issue, when there's a parish councillor under arrest as we speak for racially motivated hate crime over his actions last night and when we have a majority in the country happy to put into the highest office of the land a man who has a record of casual racism we have an inherent problem.."

The booing within the stadium whenever Italy had the ball was very unsporting.

I don’t mind racists, as long as they own it so I know who they are and can stay the fuck away from them. It’s the (majority of) racists that act in a covert manner and refuse to take accountability that are the REALLY dangerous ones. They will pretend to be your friend and accuse you of reading too much into everything, and pass it off as ‘banter’

The guy from Savills is an example as he’s claiming his account had been hacked last night and it wasn’t him tweeting, even though then vile tweets go back as far as 4 months

Let's turn this around....extreme Islamists are a very small minority of the Muslim community yet the hatred was, and still is, towards many Muslims, and other people of brown colour who condemned the actions of the extremists as much as the rest of the world.

I haven't seen other teams get boo'd during their national anthem by the apposing team fans. Yet, without fail, some so called England fans seem to have relished being disrespectful to the opposing team - something I'm sure the knee taking, lgbtqi+ supporting, society supporting England team were ashamed to see.

True fans support their team through the ups and downs. They do not turn on them, and they certainly do not resort to a person's colour to try and bring them down. That just goes to show how little their thinking ability is. Ignorance can and should be challenged. Racism is NEVER ok.

As a neutral observer I can say that last night was one of those boring matches that I wish I had never bothered with. When England scored I knew that they had scored too soon. A pathetic attempt to shut up shop for 87 minutes instead of giving it a real go to get the 2-0 cushion.

Italy deserved their win. The only consolation for England fans was that they deserved to lose. It would be horrible if they had Italy's possession, attempts on goal and still lost. That aside, during the match, there was video footage akin to the storming of the White House for those pissed up thugs who were drinking all day. An eight o clock kick off? What idiot, on financial grounds, thought that was a good idea?

This is whataboutism. If calling all Muslims as extremists because a few of them are is wrong, it's also wrong to call an entire country as having problems with racism when only a few are. Both are wrong and that seems to be the problem with political discourse these days.

It is up to all of us to stand up against racism. You don’t have to laugh at rascist jokes, you don’t have to vote for rascist politicians, and you don’t have to stay friends with rascists.

We all have a part to play in showing this is not acceptable & not being done in our names.

It is hard for people to stand up to this, but just think how much harder it is to be on the receiving end of racism.

Say no to racism & say it again & again

When Martin Luther King went to register to vote he was confused and angered by the question on the form that said “race” as the answer “human” wasn’t available.

To truly accept each other for what we are, our faults and our triumphs, we need to become one race. Human. If one man pointed that out half a century ago. How did we arrive here?

We can blame racism on ill educated, bigots. But that’s not the truth. We can blame it on fear. But that is not the truth either. Racism is the product of your own inadequacy, if you are racist, you are inadequate. As a human. If your system is racist, your system is inadequate, not fit for purpose and therefore should be questioned at every tier.

We are governed by a system that only works because it is designed to divide us into smaller groups that are easily conquered or set against one another, else why would we let quite obviously corrupt, nepotistic self serving individuals (of all colours of rosettes) govern us.

If we threw aside our differences and formed the unbreakable chains of “unity” imagine the world we could live in. I weep for this world and all those that turn the other cheek. Racists are empowered by the system that condemns them, oh the irony.

Never denied racism is an issue. On what basis are you saying that there are more white racists than Islamic extremists? The absolute numbers will be obviously higher for the white racists just because we live in a white majority country. What do you think about percentage? If you are going by anecdotal stories, I have heard white kid being beaten up in schools where white kids are minority. I have a friend's daughter (Hindu) whose Muslim friend daily tells some shit about Christians are doomed and my friend has to advise her to stay away from that girl. If we are looking for comparison, 27% of Muslims in Britain supported the Charlie Hebdo attackers.

But it is wrong to label Muslims as an extremist community. Similarly, it is also wrong to brand Britain as a racist country.

Which is half of the OP's subject, the poster you berated was talking about the other half. Intolerance is not only a question of colour - it's a base attitude that needs to be addressed. Apart from the mentions above of racism from Johnson and his gang, let's not forget the Labour Party was tried before the European Court of Human Rights recently and being found guilty of anti-Semitism. Racism goes up to the highest levels on both sides of the political coin in the UK which is probably one of the reasons football fans are so comfortable expressing their hate, no matter who it's for.

Just an observation here - diverting attention away from the OPs subject, does not reflect well on those doing it…

Just another observation here - the OP's subject was racism in football. Your previous post was about jokes, friends and politicians, not football.

To my mind people are people and we should celebrate our diverse society in all it's forms

There are however some bigots about who think it is acceptable and clever to demean others for many reasons. Personally I think it demonstrates weakness and fear

We should embrace difference not shun it

I have to say I like using Twitter… but I shut it down last night because we all knew what was about to happen

This is the point im trying to make. People were expecting it to happen and thats not normal. I saw a post circulating twitter about 'punish a black person day.' I was genuinely worried for my friends and family.

I am surprised that social media sites are not doing it yet. It's the anonymity that gives all the racist scum the boldness to do such things.

Anyone who thinks it's a small minority is mistaken. Its wider than you think. What we hear via social media is the far end of a much broader spectrum.

Makes me so sad that my children who are mixed race are having to face it, understand it, process it and find their way to navigate it.

We need many voices to stand up to it and not try to deny it is happening or belittle the impact just because its an apparent small majority.

Those voices make a difference when we are in our kitchen at home having to have blunt, real conversations about their feelings and the realities of the world.

Yep I'm mixed race and my parents had it a lot worse when they were growing up in this country. Its to the point where parents with coloured skin would need to teach their children about racism and slur terms and to ignore them. Its not right.

Having read this post.

I am not supporting the social media companies.

Having seen on a newsfeed that T******r gets 350,000 uploads a hour per a day on average . How do they check?

If 10 % are racist. Then 10 people have to check 35 each every hour day and night. Yes they have “tools” to flag. This without having to check other types of “ illegal “ posts

Having been on Internet since dial up. Have seen “chat rooms “ closed mainly due to trolls etc and isp’s not being able to moderate.

On FAB, yes moderators do this, If I am correct they are non paid. If they were then FAB would have to be a fully paid site or have adverts?

So all “chat” or social media sites have to go paid ? or full ID , which is passport debit card etc.

Its a bigger "small minority" than they'd have us believe. Taking more knees has clearly not moved the dial at all....thats because taking a knee is easy... Agree but get a grip, out of 50 million odd English that is a small minority. We are one of the most tolerant and diverse countries in the whole of Europe

Well said.

My god… it is the “we are the least racist” backslapping again… give yourself a round of applause whilst we are at it….

Least racist does not mean racism doesn’t exist..but it does feel like people have been emboldened to be more racist in public…like it’s more acceptable to "

20 year's ago I moved away from London with my family due to not wanting to bring my children up in an environment that was rife with crime and fear as the estate we lived on was run by gang's of teens.

So we moved to Hampshire near the sea lovely quiet ish area.

Then slowly as I got to know people in the area and working in and around the area, Portsmouth and surrounding I was absolutely gob smacked at the level of racists out in the open about it I'm not talking about one or two people it feels at times like almost everyone you meet are racist.

This is still the case today and I have gotten into a few tricky situations calling people out.

I have lived all over the country and encountered lots of diversity and I have been the victim of a very violent racist attack at the hand's ( and baseball bats) of the then national front.

I have suffered abuse from a friend's family because I was not Indian and his father didn't want his son being friends with someone who wasn't Indian!

I've been chased by football hooligans for wearing the wrong shirt, intolerance is everywhere it's sad that we are still discussing this in 2021 but I feel that people need to look past their own intolerance to realise that the problem is far deeper than blaming a group of small minded thug's because I bet alot of those guy's have decent jobs and are well payed middle class not the unemployed hooligans that people assume.

Whilst great strides have been made to try to eliminate racism I think for the most part particularly in the media it's just a smoke screen trying to cash in on what's currently trendy.

Example nearly every ad these days shows a mixed race family or gay couples.

I bet most the people making the decisions are still White straight executives thinking that it will make their company look more diverse.

Until we realise that racism is engrained into the culture it's going to be impossible to get rid of.

To expect this to happen in our lifetime is too much to ask it's going to take a hundred, two hundred maybe three hundred years to change people's mindsets if ever.

I don't know maybe we are going about it the wrong way, rather than trying to force people to change their opinions and forcing them underground engage in educated debate!!!

Or am delusional that anyone can sit in a room with two groups of people with a vastly different attitudes and have an educated debate?

It all starts with respect for others and this starts at home, what's become apparent is that people have zero respect for anyone else ,this is something that needs to change and we ALL need to take responsibility and stop pointing the finger at everyone else and take a good hard look at ourselves first.

Yes people face abuse as a result of actions taken on a football pitch and it’s inexcusable. As I said earlier, Southgate has been widely criticised for his decision making. The colour of his skin hasn’t been a talking point, or factor in any of the criticism though.

It does make me feel sick to see it, it also makes me feel sick to see the level of hypocrisy surrounding this topic on here and other platforms.

There was a thread a month ago where people discussed the relevance and need for ‘taking the knee’, several people stated that it was pointless, that it was gesture politics or that it wasn’t necessary anymore. Yet here we are again.

It’s not just because of social media, it’s not because they’re morons, it’s because this type of thought process persists and goes unpunished.

Can we solve racism? I really don’t know but it’s not going to be solved by tutting quietly over threads, it’s going to get better by challenging attitudes and educating people

Diverse we may be but tolerant we are not. We wear a thin veneer of inclusively that hides all the trappings of colonial mentality underneath.

And whilst it may be "small minority" who committed the very worst of racist abuse, that is still too many and a sizeable number sympathised with those views and made excuses for them.

As Angela Davis said: "In a racist society, it is not enough to be non-racist, we must be anti-racist".

Those who put their energy into minimising, dismissing and whatabouting are part of the problem.

Absolutely bang on.

No one wants to be seen as racist but many of us carry bias and feel discomfort around the subject. Many people comfort themselves that ‘I’m not that bad’ but tackling bias, prejudice and ignorance in small measures is just as important

Those who put their energy into minimising, dismissing and whatabouting are part of the problem.

There is racism and tribalism in every culture and country I'm the whole world.

Thank you for proving my point with your dismissiveness and whataboutery. It's also worth pointing out that the British Empire was the largest in the history of the world, so it stands to reason that as the originator of it, we have sone of the biggest issues associated with our relationship between colonialism and power. "

Racism is one thing, and a very bad thing, and self loathing a country because of the ills of the past is another. Not one person alive today is responsible for those particular ills of the past and I for one share no guilt for the actions of our ancestors.

And this is not a race to the bottom but hopefully, after Sunday's match and the way people are appearing to come together and speak out against racism and all associated behaviours of bullying, micro-agression etc. speaks volumes.

We just need the politicians to follow suit and stop being overtly negative role-models until the very last person understands that it is not ok, that is matters not what other countries do.

This is England, well Britain, and if we want to continue to be proud of it, we should be proud of zero yellow cards versus 4 for example. We should be proud of this team of footballers and leaders like Southgate.

Perhaps even the last Tommy Robinson fan will eventually grasp that it is a much nice feeling to be on this side of history!

Racism isn't anything new its been around for centuries. Problem is we allow it to happen.

But when shit hits the fan like a riot for example everyone seem to change their tone.

Hopefully the great example Gareth Southgate has set as a leader will start to be a role model. We have a government of complete idiots and narcissists at the moment and to change the tone that’s been set since Brexit is going to take a decade. The hope I have is that most of the younger generation have much more tolerance. I worry about what will happen when the World Cup is in Qatar. That sounds like a recipe for English football ‘fans’ to cause mayhem.

Diverse we may be but tolerant we are not. We wear a thin veneer of inclusively that hides all the trappings of colonial mentality underneath.

why would you be ashamed to call your self english ?

Because the ones who are targetting people and racially attacking them are english. Surely its obvious why I am ashamed?

what makes you think they are english ?"

We saw a video from Wembley of a large group of English fans attacking a small group of Italian fans. Definitely English.

Absolutely disgusting.

Shameful.

If you want to hear someone talking tha most sense I‘ve heard on the subject then go on catch up and listen to John Barnes on radio 2 about half hour ago.

He said a few things that some might not want to hear but I think he was spot on and you could sense the emotion in his voice as he spoke. I think it was all he could do to contain himself.

You know, it really is not a race to the bottom as to being a bit better than the others (if this is true, I do not have the figures and I doubt there will be exact figures on how many racists per population because that would involve major MAJOR state surveillance!)

I find one racist in a community one too many! Let's strive towards none, eh?

" If we are looking for comparison, 27% of Muslims in Britain supported the Charlie Hebdo attackers."

Are you telling me they asked every single Muslim in the UK about the attacks? Are you for real? Who even knows who all the Muslims in the UK are?

I could accept that 27% of the people they asked were in support, but even then, was it a representative sample that was questioned?

If this isn't an accurate statistic (and I strongly suspect it's not) then it just adds fuel to the fire of misinformation and allows people to grow prejudice on a seemingly strong false foundation.

Are you able to say where you got this figure from?

By that same argument, I could also ask you some questions.

Do you even know if all the trolls on the internet are British? Even if they are, do you know if same person is using multiple accounts? Do you have any statistics on how many people support such behaviour on twitter?

My point is that two wrongs don't make it right. Just like it is wrong to paint the entire Islamic community as extremists because there are few of them, it is wrong to paint entire country as racist because there are few of them. I never said racism is not an issue here.

I understand that sentiment totally and yet, I do not think we need to be ashamed of other people's actions as it kind of implies a little that we have something to do with it.

Sorry to be nit picking here but I really think people including those who say and do the awful things are responsible. They just HAPPEN to be English (or any other nationality)

And another generic thing: The little German girl who was seen crying after the German team lost to England - look at what we did for her. The spontaneous collection of funds (which her family then sent to UNICEF0 is the other side of things and that we should wear with pride.

That gesture alone did so much for the English reputation in Germany and in other European countries.

" Do you even know if all the trolls on the internet are British? Even if they are, do you know if same person is using multiple accounts? Do you have any statistics on how many people support such behaviour on twitter? "

I have absolutely no idea. But I definitely won't pick some stats out of the air. Where did you get your stats from? You deftly sidestepped answering that.

We agree! Now back to that pesky question of mine. Where did you get the data that 27% of ALL UK MUSLIMS .....etc.

I'm calling you out as spreading false information that will support racism. I'm happy to apologise if you can point out the accuracy of your questioned statement.

Thanks,
