No. Not rimming you filth..

Do you like your metaphorical arse licked and worshipped? Do you accept arselicking or draw a boundary line before they get ideas you actually do care for them

Would life be complete without a bit of exaggerated tongue action?

One persons arse licking is another persons being supportive. Unless you are talking about sycophantic fawning. That is just creepy lol

I was out when you said there was no rimming

In all seriousness, I don't mind a compliment. It's a nice feeling and only natural to have happy chemicals dancing round your brain as a result of it.

But out and out metaphorical arselicking is a no. I lose interest dead quick. Makes me feel like there's an ulterior motive or someone's trying to force something. Then, by my nature, that makes me really wary so I tend to distance myself and retreat.

It's one of my pet hates on here.

Some people have made an art form of it.

Compliments are always welcome but when some people take it to a different level and compliment anyone who acknowledges them or engages with them it becomes sychophantic.

On the flip side there are those who are adamant they don't fall for the smoke blowing but their veris and forum engagement say otherwise.

If people are being genuine, then a compliment is ok, but fawning and over the top comments make me feel uncomfortable.

I detest arse licking online or in real life, I am only sympathetic if the arse licker for example has very low confidence through bad life events or social interaction disabilities.

It is very prevalent on here, some trying to win favour with individuals or what look like some cliques. It can be very obvious. It may get you somewhere, but not with real or decent people

Real arselicking is outstanding.

Figurative arselicking doesn’t give me the same sensation.

"One persons arse licking is another persons being supportive. "

I'd definitely agree with this. I could read something and see it as being a bit sycophantic, fawning whatever and another could read it as a genuine compliment. In a similar vein, unless we know the dynamic between the two posters, we might not be aware of it being tongue in cheek, a deliberate satire of the whole sordid affair.

You only have to look at the abundance of "say something nice about the poster above" style threads to know that a small amount of it is indeed popular.

Anyway, I'm going to say that we all enjoy a small amount of figurative arse licking and life wouldn't be complete without it.

Just think how dull the forums be without it - no "Oh you're so wonderful, no you are the best in the world" and no grumpy naysayers to sigh about it.

I think the licking is in the arse, sorry eye, of the beholder. Don't take it seriously and it can be a harmless booster, but believe the hype and you'll end up up your own arse.

Simple truth is thought all these sites, not just in the forums. The cliche "Flattery will get you everywhere" is abundant. Many thrive off it however insincere the flattery may be. Its human nature.

" Why does it make you wary? Because of the excess? Or because you don't believe those words apply to you ? Modesty? "

Because of the excess mainly. Even though I might not think something of myself which I've been complimented on I can get along with the odd compliment. But if it's constant/over the top I turn into the worlds biggest cynic. I used to take everything at face value and was dead naive but my last job taught me a lot about the wrong side of people and it's pushed me to the other extreme.

I'm slowly meandering my way to a happy medium but it'll just take a bit of time for me to figure out.

Maybe trusting. Not naive. I'm glad you didn't hit the other extreme end and become overly suspicious. Happy medium findings dear !

There and to the left a bit

I think "false flattery" is definitely a *thing* on any site like this - and works both ways round - those who give it and those who seek it.

Those who give it in the hope of being noticed and getting the attention of whoever they're bestowing it upon, and those who seek it for attention and an ego boost of some kind.

It's usually quite obvious, how many times have we seen threads where the OP says something like they're feeling neglected or ugly or lacking self-confidence or a myriad of other things and before you know it the thread is filled with others telling them how loved and beautiful etc they are - usually egged on by the OP responding at regular intervals to deny it - now in that instance it's a judgement call as to the OPs intent - but invariably the majority of those responding are doing so with false flattery without actually knowing the OP other than their textual forum presence.

As I started off by saying, it's the nature of sites like this - and I tend to just ignore it when I see it.

If I pay someone a compliment I do so because I genuinely believe it which is why I rarely join the "say something nice about the poster above" type threads, not because I don't necessarily think they're nice, but because I struggle to think of genuine and meaningful compliments for someone I don't know.

"

Now that raises an interesting point - it's of course a natural instinctive thing to return a compliment with a compliment, or at least feel that you should (I know I have felt so) but is that in itself not a form of "false flattery" too? You're only complimenting the person because they complimented you, not because you *want* to kind of thing.
