In Essex we have one of the best Grammar schools in the UK. It's one of the highest achieving academic schools in the UK. It has just been slammed by OFSTED as inadequate. The school that OFSTED dreams of inspecting does not it exist. It will not exist and never existed.
And parents will still try their darnest to get their kids in there.... |

"What reasons did OFSTED give for their decision?
Lack of respect amongst pupils towards each other. Previously was outstanding. Same as every other school if you dig deep enough. "
If they had any concerns about safeguarding it would drop straight to inadequate. Maybe they should focus less on results, and more on the personal development of their pupils.
Saying that, I don't know the school. But they don't give inadequate without strong reasons. |

Sadly that statement seems to define my Schooling in the UK. |

Ok.
I understand this was an unannounced visit and being a firm believer that education is about more than academic achievements I think the OFSTED rating was fair |

An excellent school can go downhill quickly if there’s q change of leadership which impacts the ‘winning formula’ and culture. This must be true of the state, selective and private sectors alike. It must be a nightmare trying to keep up standards these days with so many aspects to consider.
Personally I think education in this country is f’d anyway. Way too much focus on churning out woke, box ticked identikit drones that all think the same. But that’s another debate altogether. |

I think they should all be unannounced visits rather than letting the schools have time to prep the building, staff and pupils, that way they get to see the school as it really is
This school, if you look it up, was picked for a very specific reason and has rightly lost its ‘outstanding’ status. Bring a good school isn’t just about churning out academically A grade students, but ensuring their wellbeing when in their care. |

Tom, phrasing what has been described by some ex pupils and some still there as a toxic culture towards female pupils involving allegations of sexual assault as 'a lack of respect' looks a tad casual..
The truth will as usual be somewhere in between but if pupils feel unsafe and especially for the reasons given then how else can the regulator grade it after carrying out their own assessment? |

Nearer than you think |
"Well there is more to this than meets they eye. The witchhunt has begun. Trust me on this one."
I was in education for many years, latterly in a managerial post. Trust me, external inspections are necessary and full inspections are rigorous. There'll be a justifiable reason for their conclusions and the school will be expected to address them in an agreed time frame.
Good education is far more than good results. |

Ofsted recently changed there criteria slightly so targets may be different and harder to achieve. Areas a school may have previously gained points getting them an outstanding may have changed too.
Basically the goal posts have changed. |
