Songs with meaning
Jump to: Newest in thread
Tell me some songs where the lyrics have a deep meaning, perhaps more so than you initially realise.
It need not have any personal significance to you, just something that makes you stop and pay attention.
Peng Black Girls by Enny and Jorja Smith. |

A lot of the music I love is 30, 40 or even 50 years old. Can you imagine any of the shite that is playing right now will be played in 6 months time. Nope, me neither |

Yeah, I don't think WAP will be a classic. I do enjoy modern stuff - it's good fun, but the trend for lowest denominator, overly sexualised videos is a bit grating. |

Kevin Bloody Wilson:
1) "Do you fuck on first dates"
2) "Rooting in the back of the yute "
3) "You can't say cunt in Canada "
4) "Don't touch your sister "

Alice, Alice, who the fuck is Alice? Except I do know who the fuck Alice is, she's one of my verifications! |

Didn't realise how much this track from the Foo Fighters hurt until I broke down while singing it a few years ago...
"I've got another confession to make
I'm your fool
Everyone's got their chains to break
Holdin' you
Were you born to resist, or be abused?
Is someone getting the best
The best, the best, the best of you?
Is someone getting the best
The best, the best, the best of you?
Or are you gone and onto someone new?" |

"Above the Clouds of Pompeii by Bears Den. It’s about a son talking to his dad about the mother/wife they lost.
Breaks my heart that song. "

Everything Dies by Type O Negative. Check out the video as well. I find it very comforting how it describes the emptiness of loss so simply and honestly.
On a lighter note, Smash it Up Pt 1 and 2 by the Damned. Everytime I hear it I just feel like things are ok
I'm gonna check out some of the thread suggestions! Thanks folks |

I absolutely don't agree that all songs have meaning. Some are just repetitive noise, with very low amounts of talent or production skill ![](/icons/s/mrgreen.gif) |

And that is the joy of everyone having different tastes - no-one says we all have to like it, but if someone does and it means something to them that is all that matters.
And for a song to have "meaning" it doesn't necessarily have to be about the song or the lyrics themselves - it could be about a specific meaning to an individual person because of the memories or associations it provokes. |

Good music and lyrics can move one to a special place.
For the younger Fabers try
"The living years" - Mike and the mechanics.
For the older ones try
"Yesterday when I was young" by Charles Aznavour
and all the version of "Hurt" by Johnny Cash for anyone contemplating drug use.

"You'll never walk alone. Truly spine tingling every time.
And I sing it softly to my kids as their bedtime song. "
Personally think fields of athenry is more poignant..the lengths a father went to ,to ensure his children were fed and the price he paid for that deed...
Also Grace ...I feel it takes you into the prison cell and you're actually present at the ceremony.. |

" "Hurt" by Johnny Cash for anyone contemplating drug use. "
or 'needle of death' by Bert Jansch for that.
One song that catches me out when I hear it is Jamie Cullum's "Photograph", incredibly contemplative, but a great tune to boot...
"When I look back on my ordinary, ordinary life, I see so much magic, though I missed it at the time." |

Secret hideaway in the pennines |
One I can't listen to is Phil Collins against all odds, it was on the car radio after having to identify someone very important to me after she had been hit by a car.
I still tear up 30 years on, because there was no chance of her coming back to me |
