"Talk of banning the practice of boiling lobsters alive. Prawns are caught and boiled alive. Could the delay result in food poisoning ?"
No because the food will be cooked after its humanely killed.

This is the reason why I can’t eat crab… I had the traumatic experience as a kid on holiday in the Caribbean watching a crab trying to escape from a boiling pot … 3 times… my gran was not a merciful person!! I remember thinking the Crab was so plucky for trying!! |

it is generally felt that a lot of crustacia like lobstes do not have brains and nervous systems in the same way other creatures do. stabbing itvin the brain is tricky if it doesn't have one.
stabbing to disconnect the nervous system may not actually achieve anything either.
stunning...rendering unconcious by freezing may shut down or significantly reduce the animals normal pattern of awareness the same way a human system totally shuts down.
either way, if you are carnivore in nature, we can attempt to choose to use the best methods of despatch.
you cannot ignore that humans can make choices outside their normal remit. nature as a whole does not work like that. a fox will kill a milky doe rabbit and have no concerns about the kits that will die and there are thousands of scenarious like that.
who says plants dont like to be killed and eaten. millions of plant species have strategies to stop being eaten with thorns and deadly poison etc.
we are the only species that claim conscience. doesn't mean we are right. but one can choose so its a difference unique to us. the problem comes when one thinks your belief is greater/more correct etc. than someone else |

I have to admit that I was amazed at how fast Caribbean crabs can move in comparison to the edible crabs in British waters.
I don't think our crabs would be bothered to try and climb out of the pot. They would just drop off to sleep as the water became warmer and be away with the ccrustacean fairies by the time it got anywhere near boiling.
Crustacea are not generally plunged straight into boiling water but brought to the boil from cold tap temperature.
Well, that's how I was taught to cook prawns, lobsters and spider crabs and I've caught and cooked more than my fair share over the years and never seen any appear distressed other than changing colour!
I wouldn't eat any that were already dead before cooking (including raw frozen ones). Same goes for molluscs.
40 or so years ago I would eat uncooked prawns straight from the net and 'Praires' (a cockle cousin) as I gathered them knowing the sea water was clean around Jersey's remote reefs. Not now, alas.
