Power steering
Jump to: Newest in thread
The power steering is faulty in my car and I've got to drive it from my house to the nearest dealership in Tewkesbury which is only about 17 miles away but there's lots of roundabouts
How on earth did we drive around without power steering in days gone by?!
Hopefully it is something that the dealer can fix free of charge despite it being a n older (when do cars be e classics?!) car. |

Power steering and air conditioning.
How the hell did we drive for so long without both?
I might argue electric windows too, it’s a pain if ever you still have to manually unwind them isn’t it? |

What is a bugger is when the wire in your window regulator snaps on the coldest day ever as your driving to work so freeze your wotsit off!
I both love and hate my car at the minute. |

Does any dealer fix anything on any car free of charge these days? |

Apparently yes, if its a certain code on the fault on my car then they replace the power steering motor for free. Got to pay for the diagnostic test though cos that's not part of the fix so they get you someway |

Shouldn't really be driving a car with faulty steering
Ok it will likely be totally fine ( says he )
But your actually dicing with danger
You could end including an accident
I'd advice getting a transporter to take it to said garage or call the aa
Safety first
Plus if you get pulled and a vehicle check you could be liable for prosecution
Don't hate me I'm just giving you my professional advice |

Had the dealership not adviced this ?
As I'm sure in the case of accident they're advice can also be liable
Have to be careful in this trade when it comes to safety and liability |

Nope. Both them and an independent mech ic have said it would be OK to drive it there. |

Yes that's true once moving
Zafira b
Not sure of years of production top of my head say 2006 ish maybe through to 2013_2014 ?
Anyway these vehicles power steering fails are a common fault rack housing cracks and causes the power steering to become not only heavy to turn but also very very abusive on its rotations and is highly likely to cause the unskilled driver of such vehicles to cause an accident

The old cars with no powered steering didn’t have such wide, low profile tyres, so the grip on the road these days will make the faulty steering harder to operate. Probably other influences such as camber/geometry will affect the driveability compared to old cars, too.
It really should be on a transporter. If you knowingly drive a car with faulty steering you’re probably invalidating your insurance, too. |

Driving a car with faulty power steering isn’t comparable with driving one that was never fitted with it.
In the days before power steering the rack was designed to give you more leverage to turn the wheels. The number of turns lock to lock was more.
Tyres are much bigger too nowadays so harder to steer.
You shouldn’t be driving a car with faulty steering any more than you should drive one with faulty brakes. |

The biggest battle is actually trying to manually force fluid steering and electronic motors, wide tyres also
Steering geometry not so much as it's pretty much still the same

Exactly correct. Once you are moving the steering is only slightly heavier if at all. It's parking that you'll really nice the difference. Perfectly safe. Remember cars don't have power steering, its power assisted steering, there is a physical link between your steering wheel and the road wheels. Even trucks have power assisted steering. True power steering ie solely hydraulics you get on tractors and it's one reason why they are very tricky to steer at higher speeds and are limited to 50k.
You'll be fine driving it to the garage. |

"There are lots of parts and components on a car today that are actually power assisted if we went a bit deeper into things "
I had a power assisted aerial on a couple of cars in the late 80’s early 90’s.
I remember turning on the ignition as a friend leant against the car and the aerial of my 1990 cavalier CDi went up inside his jumper! He pulled away from it and bent the aerial.
Next time I used it it snapped and the white plastic serrated thingy inside it that put it up and down just wound out of the wing with the aerial flopping around on the end of it.
I’ve not had issues getting things to up for me when I focus my attention on them since then though. |

Yep! My drivers window came off track, took my car to my very friendy Renault dealer near Richo arena and got it sorted for free, I bought the car from them, service it there and always take cakes and if the lady on the service desk is on here she'll know who I am so come say hi |

I didn't have power steering until my 4th car.
We used to manage because it requires less effort to steer the wheels when the vehicle is in motion.
If you cast your minds back to your driving test, you'll remember that you shouldn't really be turning the steering wheel whilst your car is stationary - as it can cause tyre wear, but, of course, we all do.
Power steering makes it easier to turn the wheel at low speeds.
Unfortunately, due to the nature of how these system work, when they fail, it can have the effect of making steering harder than in the same vehicle without power assistance, as the power steering fluid adds it's own resistance.
Also, you'll notice that cars these days have far wider tyres than they did 30 or 40 years ago.
I agree with some of the above advice regarding having the car picked up.
Just one question though. Have you checked your power steering fluid level? |

How did you follow the road if you didn't turn the week while in motion and there's a corner?!
No. I tried but couldn't find the reservoir and thought there's possibly better trained people to do it at the garage without me relying in professor YouTube |

"The power steering is faulty in my car and I've got to drive it from my house to the nearest dealership in Tewkesbury which is only about 17 miles away but there's lots of roundabouts
How on earth did we drive around without power steering in days gone by?!
Hopefully it is something that the dealer can fix free of charge despite it being a n older (when do cars be e classics?!) car.
Does any dealer fix anything on any car free of charge these days?
Yep! My drivers window came off track, took my car to my very friendy Renault dealer near Richo arena and got it sorted for free, I bought the car from them, service it there and always take cakes and if the lady on the service desk is on here she'll know who I am so come say hi "
I can recall some Renault meganes had a serious recall amount due to crap wiring in there door harness's |

"Update..... Peugeot are going to fix it for free even though its just outside of the extended good will period! I'm so bloody happy!
Just waiting for it to get booked in now. "
That means that had a fault
They knew about maybe a recall
But at least it's been done for free happy days |

I know it had a fault lol there was already an extended good will on it for cars under 10 years old. Mine is 11 years old. The dealer said to try contacting HO to see if they'd extend it further which I did and thankfully they said yes |
