I was wondering how people felt about Nick Griffin, leader of BNP, being allowed to air his views on Question Time tonight? Should he? Shouldn't he? Or are you indifferent? I must admit to feeling a bit half n half ... I hate the man and his views but also hate censorship |

is'nt this country supposed to be about the freedom of speech? im not saying you have to agree with everything he says, im not saying i agree with everything he says but he should have the rights to be able to say it, everything should be viewed in a possative and negative way, and people who do not agree with something MUST have the rights to speak out, other wise we just living in a community where we have to just take whats thrown at us and forced to accpet it, we may as well be communist if thats what people want to happen |

privately i think in a strange way the TV are looking forward to it as the ratings will go throught the roof. many people will be tuning in to see what he has to say. it may end up a farce but i believe the guy should be allowed to say his piece......then the public can decide for themselves. whilst the parties views can be taken as extreme i cant but help to think how the policies of the present government play right into their hands re immigration, border control etc. one things for sure they will increase their base of potential voters by their presence on question time |

It is not only communist country’s that suppress the freedom of speech as many right wing regimes also do, as for the BNP being given airtime they are a legitimate political party even if I/we don’t agree with all that they stand for. |

Let him speak. Let the daft walloper be exposed for the extreme right wing, prejudiced, biggoted scumbag that he is. Give him a platform on which to hang himself.
Sure, there'll be those who'll agree with him and jump on the Nationalist bandwagon, but they'll be the usual moronic, pea-brained, ex-football casual, beer-bellied motherfuckers on the lower echelons of society who find The Sun an intellectual challenge. Fuck 'em.
There is no place in ANY modern society for parties such as these. |

Griffin needs to be allowed to appear on Question Time so we can question his 'policies'. Jack Straw (who I believe is also appearing) will eat him alive.
Remember Martin Niemoller (spelling?)
"First they came for the communists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a communist;
Then they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a socialist;
Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a trade unionist;
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Jew;
Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak out for me."

I do agree with everyone else...I might not like what he says but I'll defend his right to say it... however for every action there is a reaction, and as long as that is within the law I am happy for the BNP backlash there will be after the show
Hopefully he does get shown up really badly in it tonight... |

My description was supposed to be a bit tongue-in-cheek.
I'm sure across the party they've some rather clever members and from very affluent backgrounds and from highly paid jobs in responsible sectors, but there'll be sections of the public who'll probably wholeheartledly agree with the parties stance on issues. Notably the enormous swathe of young British white males with little to aspire to but call centre employment, unaffordable housing, etc and who want to blame someone for their dilemma (may as well be immigrants), rather than bear the burden of responsibility themselves because the could'nt be arsed going to school or working. |

That'd be easier if any aspect of the BNP 'manifesto' were 'mature and adult' and if their occasional appearances on television weren't 'abusive'.
You need only look at the gaggle of wannabee stormtroopers Griffin surrounds himself with on every occassion to see how he thinks. I fully expect him to grow a silly little mustache any day now and he may even be considering having a testicle removed. |

I believe tickets for Question Time are allocated before the guest list is published. I also believe about 50% more tickets are issued than there are places 'cos Auntie knows there'll be a lot of no-shows at free events. |

maybe so...but there is be bnp supporters, and there is no way they will just give tickets out willy nilly, the guests have been vetted but the bbc wont say how.
i guess that would be another debate |

There's clearly some for of informal vetting. The form to get tickets is at http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/programmes/question_time/1858613.stm (curiously the BNP isn't even on the list of parties) and Auntie "will contact as many applicants as possible prior to the programme" "to enable (them) to invite a balanced cross-section of people".
I wonder how they vet applicants for Gardeners Question Time. |

but don't we invade other countries because we dont like what their leaders say ... or because they aren't allowed the freedom to express their views??
we are supposed to be allowed to say what we want ... unless it upsets someone so much for freedom of speech
... but 2 of our MEP's are BNP ... they are a legitimate party, whether we agree with them or not .... and actually i happen to think, not allowing Nick Griffin to speak publicly ... makes them more like the forbidden fruit
I have met Nick Griffin on a number of occasions, he's an arse ... but i hate censorship, we're adults, we know where the on off button is. |

as we live in a free and democratic society i think we all have a right to air our views, ok some are far right and some are also far left, but no matter what their veiws, we as individuals have a choice, we can agree or disagree, or we can choose not to listern at all,but to render the person unable to air his veiw in the first place, smacks of a dictatorial society, unles it's treasonous then he/she has avery right to express his/her opinion, after all isn't that just what each and everyone of us is enjoying right now,THE FREEDOM to express our view point ??????? |

There a legal party who should be allowed to have there say just the same as labour, the lib dems or any other legal party. You may or may not agree with what they have to say or there policy just the same as you may or may not agree with any other parties policy but you have to let them have there say in our great country where we value freedom of speach. How many people agree with them will become clear when we have an election and the voters will then make up their minds on them just the same as any other party.
Its called democracy and its something a lot of people have died fighting to save and some thing we should all value. |

i totally agree with you, i dont support the BNP, tho i must admit i do agree with some of their views, just not the in your face ones and i do think they could express themselves better, but at the end of the day just because i do not support them that does not mean i have to rights to say they shouldnt be allowed, i dont support Labour either so should i slag of their views too? everyone had the rights to an opinion no matter what colour they are or where they was born, and the good thing about this country is we have the right to express it, and that should never be taken away by anyone |

At the end of the day whether or not you agree with them and i don't
There should be no debate as to whether this should go ahead
They are a recognised legitimate party like it or not and they should be allowed to act like one
They may attack minorities but are the media then doing the same by attacking them?
Can you imagine the uproar if a minority party such as lib dems were not allowed their say?
Let the man have his say as everyone in the country is entitled to freedom of speech or should be (but that's another debate ) |

It's a common ploy. Make an outrageous statement in a matter-of-fact manner and try to sow seeds of doubt in good peoples' minds, try to make them think THEY'RE the ones who are out of step with mainstream thinking |

He may well be a c*nt but he's not a moron and will have been well primed, coached and advised on what he can and can't talk about and how to answer the obvious questions and attacks. He'll have been prep'd with what to throw at other parties to put them on the spot and twist the facts in his favour.... oh and so much more. They know this is a gift-horse if it's played right.
Fingers crossed he fucks up and others are equally prepared. |

I'm not sure about the legal stuff associated with the party or anything like that, but assumng the party is legal and above board then why shouldn't he be allowed airtime ?
After all, the rest of them get their 15minutes of fame.
Nobody says that anyone has to agree with him or the views of his party, but freedom of speech and all that has to apply across the board, not just for the 'nice' and so called mainstreem political parties.
This is dangerous ground, so this is where my comments begin and end on the subject of the BNP |

Of course the BNP have a right to appear on Question Time and talk about their policies. Most of us may not like it but as has been said previously, they are a political party with elected MP's/EMP's. I think trying to prevent them from having freedom of speech is rather pathetic and is nothing more than trying to silence people whose views others don't share. What ever next...the Labour Party banning the Conservatives from talking about their policies?
The BNP are a racist party whose members comprise of racists and people who are looking for a change as the mainstream parties no longer offer anything and parliament is very corrupt. There is a BNP group in my town who were caught on CCTV outside the pub they meet in giving Nazi salutes so this sums up their policies!
Politicians have shot themselves in the foot due to them never listening to the people who elected them thus driving parts of the electorate into more far right or far left parties. Maybe people have had enough and want change no matter where it comes from, perhaps people are merely sending a message to parliament to start doing more for the people and less stealing tax payers money to make themselves richer! If things don't change and immigration stays like it is then i can sadly see a far right party in power in the not too distant future....i'm just glad my grandparents are not around to see what this country has become...did they fight a world war for this?

I am not sure it’s all about being ashamed… I would imagine some fear it will affect their jobs and some fear being victim of the activists from the opposite end of the scale…. a taste of the medicine they choose not to acknowledge gets dished out by the thug members of their own party. It’s OK to ignore the terror some BMP members inflict on innocent people…. As long as they don’t have a bunch of anti-BMP balaclava wearing thugs bricking their windows and chucking fire-bombs at their cars. |

Can I just point out, as someone who lives an area that elected a neanderthal as an MEP, he didn't get elected because people drifted over to the BNP. He didn't gain any more votes than he had last time, it was a simple case of those that would normally vote for the mainstream parties not voting at all. It was the lowest ever turn out. |

But a lot of the BNP following are not thugs! Some are elderly people who don't realise what the BNP stand for and only go on the issue that interests them. Many don't even read a manifesto but go on what their being told. Also alot are ordinary people who are not racist but have been so frustrated by the mainstream governments lack of attention to the common mans needs/wants, and their inability in tackling areas which are important to the British people such as immigration, Health Care, Education and jobs. If the politicians are more concerned with lining their own pockets at our expense then ordinary people will turn to an alternative! |

make room im comin up on my soap box....
we live in a democracy i use the term loosely becuase we are a represented democracy we vote the people we want to represent our views but due the majority dont always win due to the first past the post way that westminster works . we have freedom of speech whether we agree to what is bein said or not and with the governments of the last 30 yrs we are in a terrible state as a country and people who DO vote are looking for an alternative and this is where parties like the bnp find their way in. whether we agree or disagree they do have some following for reasons i dont know as most of their policies are not with the paper they are scrawled on! i think he should have his say as much as every other windbag does. narrow minded bigoted racist people are always going to be around and power is a heady drug. the media can be a major influence take for example the sun every 3rd day you get a good scaremongerin story from them and now they have changed their politacal allegience to the tory party sums it up for me!
common sense shall hopefully still be around near the general election! well i hope.... either that or we better start provin our "britishness"! will be watching debate tonite out of interest but dont think it will make me a white sheet wearing paid up member iv got too much of a gene pool mix for that! |

Yeah, there the ones who march for us all to have freedom of speech but then protest against someone when they don't agree with their views. Talk about double standards! |

"I was wondering how people felt about Nick Griffin, leader of BNP, being allowed to air his views on Question Time tonight? Should he? Shouldn't he? Or are you indifferent? I must admit to feeling a bit half n half ... I hate the man and his views but also hate censorship "
Same here, we hate what he stands for, but believe in freedom of speech.
I hope that by allowing him onto the programme, lots of people will see that they are just small minded bigots who have tried to curry favour by wearing suits. |

Now that the show is upon us, I worry that it's a win/ win situation for Mr Clegg. He either sits squirming under the inevitable onslaught of the audience, garnering sympathy as the victim of bullying, or he clearly and articularly spreads his poisinous rhetoric among the gullable few. Either way... |

...And finally, I'm sure all the other parties will join in the condemnation of Nick Griffin, but they are partly responsible for the general political apathy of this nation; for providing the conditions to allow the BNP to flourish and it's apparent resurgence.
Nick Griffin is a modern day Andy Warhol. Moderately talented at what he does, but COMPLETELY of his time. |

I reckon the present government are to blame for the rise in popularity of the BNP.
Especialy their imigration policies along with the preferential PC rubbish, the BNP know everyone is pissed of with it all and play on it.
They've found an opening and exploited it.
Like it or not, a lot of what they say is only what can be heard in any works canteen or pub.

Well i was disappointed in the whole Jack Straw time...erm i meant Question Time! I was hoping to see a debate but all it ended up as was attack the BNP leader and talk over him.
I read the BNP manifesto (as with every other parties manifesto) and was alarmed by when i saw what all of the BNP's policies were. Saying that the rest weren't up to much either! However, if there's going to be a debate then i wish they would have one instead of the farce i saw tonight! |

i thought it would have been a bit more of a debate! one thing i did learn from it is that politicians have helluva bags under their eyes!
noticed there wasnt a straight answer from any of them in most of the direct questions!

i personally think he was lamb to the slaughter, he was a quivering wreck!
and lets be honest it was an audience with ethnic majority so he had no chance either way.
I agree with some of his views whereby we must stop the overflow of immigrants coming in to britain ( should have only been 50,000 not 700,000!!)look at the facts in the last 5 years, crime as soard, carrying knives, drugs, women slavery, social security fraud, NHS exploitation, it goes on and on. on top of that the government has told us all to be vigilant to who lives in your street !!
at least he got guts, i give him that much.
he needs to consentrate on putting things right and put aside his racist views
There is a lot worse than him in parliament, Tony Blair and sinnfein for a start! there just more clever at it than he is
soap box just broke, lol

the country is a mess there is no doubt about it but the facts just dont add up! there def needs to be some policy reviews about who gets in and who gets out as resources are scarce enough for "genuine british citizens" but we need immigrants to keep the population up and the skills they bring. the ones just here for the welfare system and not willing to work or contribute by paying tax definately need to be removed back to the country of origin but others who are willing to contribute to society should be allowed to stay. i know in scotland we dont have as many and we are a declining population so i may see things different from others.
the party who comes up with a sensible solution needs to speak up now before this man and his muppets influence more people and we end up with them in control and it decends into clear cut racism because once they done with ethnic cleansing whats next the old? sick? disabled? remember hitler..... |

Totally agree with you.
A lot of people may not agree with his policies but I thought it was meant to be a debate not a programme to talk over someone after he had been asked a question.
But, it got the ratings up for the BBC and i suppose that must have been the intention as he didn't seem to be invited on it to answer any questions. |

If the mainstream political parties did their job properly and listened to the people who put them in a position of power then extreme parties like the BNP would disappear.
Immigration seems to be the one issue that makes people vote for the BNP, so the government should listen and act. All the country needs is a strict set of rules like countries such as Australia and Canada have in place so only those who can offer the country something, or are fleeing persecution can settle here. I'm not racist at all and have friends from all races, religions and sexual persuasions but even i'm getting fed up of how many immigrants seem to be coming in. My town resembles Poland now as there are incredible numbers of Polish people here now and i think it's becoming a joke. |

move up here there is none in my area but we really dont have any jobs for them so probably explains why. the majority of polish do want to work and do work hard and are paying into the tax system but have always been persecuted (previous family name before ww2 debrowskie)
again i dont think scotland has as many immigrants as england and its the rural areas i live in so maybe dont see it as much as others x |

trouble with your last sentence is, it can be construed as racist, although you are just making a calculated assesment thats how crazy the "racist" word is being used.
not even allowed to have an opinion that may even have the slightest undertone to those who will twist it to racism

Your exactly right as you can't say anything, or even display your own flag without being branded a racist. I was in the Anti Nazi League for many years so i'm certainly not racist!
This is how sad things have become with all this political correctness rubbish. I personally have no problem with people coming to settle here as long as they something to offer, and i don't mean pushing a mop around a floor in some low paid job because anyone already here can do that. A sensible immigration policy is all that's needed which i'm sure would see the end of the extreme political parties! |

Even with a strict set of rules we'd be faced with a southern border (which is difficult to police) facing a landmass with an even more porous southern border which faces North Africa.
Canada is in many ways fortunate in that it joins the USA and there's no great incentive to leave the USA in favour of Canada. The USA has 'strict rules' yet cannot halt the tide of illegal immigrants from Mexico. Australia has no land borders and is a fair distance by sea from from anywhere else so illegal entry is very difficult.
Legal immigration, either to fill gaps in the workforce or to provide safe haven for those in peril isn't the issue. Illegal immigration is the issue which makes the lives of all of us poorer. |

We don't and there's certainly a feeling of Scots being more tolerant to immigrants than other parts of the country. At the risk of stating the obvious I reckon illegal immigrants shun rural areas simply because they stand out more. |

"lets face it, only idiots will believe his rhetoric"
and therein lies the problem ! Unfortunately there are a lot of idiots around, who will believe what they are told and who don't stop to think. I know it is a bit of a cliche to refer to Nazi Germany, but do remember that Hitler had massive support from the population - he wasn't a funny little man with a funny little moustache that nobody took seriously. Propaganda does seem to work - look at the immediate rent-a-crowds that can suddenly flood the streets in some countries, supporting some dictator's latest diatribe against foreigners, or enemies of the state, or Jews, or Christians, or Muslims.. or (insert ethnicity or creed here) |

Where I stay there's a lady selling the Big Issue in a close entrance, of obvious Eastern European origin, who speaks no English. She sticks out like a sore thumb in an affluent area with absolutely noone other than white origin.
At first she was shunned and critised but after my friend talked to her and learned she had no choice where her posting was, and took back no more than £5 a day, several people changed their minds and now se gets frequent donations, both of food and money.
So, yes, immigration from poor countries is not going to help the overall eonomy in a time of recession but at the end of the day, the bottom line is that these are people we're talking about. Individuals trying to make a better life. Surely we can empathise with that? |

Well there's not a lot in certain parts of Glasgow. No jobs, no shops, no amenities or facilities. Nothing but houses and people and the fact remains that if you're looking to hide a tree sometimes the best place is in plain sight in amongst a whole lot of similar looking trees.
Certain areas of Glasgow attract immigrants, legal and illegal, from certain parts of the world. Govanhill, for example, has drawn members of the Roma community from various parts of mainland Europe, attracted to an area where they can, to all intents and purposes, vanish. |
