Apologies if this has been asked before, I've not seen anything regarding these matters on here previously.

So what are your thoughts? Do you support & pay for your tv licence, or are you part of the growing number of people who reject the whole idea?

I'm a rejector, and will never pay again.

I find it odd that the UK has foodbanks and child hunger, but people are still made to pay for a profit making television network. I cannot think of anywhere else in the world that does this.

We don't watch live TV..so don't need a licence.

But it doesn't stop them knocking on our door.

The last time they did was two years ago and my husband held a pint of piss in front of the guys face and told him the BBC weather forecast is heavy showers soon.

He soon left.

I think your missing the point a little bit.

The licence fee is not for watching/listening to BBC material, it's for the privelage of being able to recieve ANY live broadcast.

It's a bit like someone farting in a crowded room then charging everyone for the privalage, wether they breathe it in or not.

“I never meet”

I only watch the news on my tv and because it’s live I have to pay for it.

I resent paying for a corporation that abuses the funds they get from licence fee

The licence fee should only be taken for use of their own TV/radio services - if that was the case I’d tell them to shove it up their arse

I pay it, I'm happy to pay it.

Few reasons:

a) its cheap

b) the service you get for it is pretty amazing really.

c) along with things like the NHS, national services like this one work if everyone pays in.

d) In the current climate, there's probably no better source of news anywhere in the world (other than possibly Reuters)

I pay it for now but very rarely watch live tv these days.

My solution for this would be as most people get there tv though a digital platform (Sky,Virgin etc) ask if they want the Beeb if not disable access to the channels like they can do when you don't pay on time or cancel your subscription.

I watch enough on BBC to justify the licence fee; I don't have to wade through all the crap they put out along with the good stuff, and I now tend to regard the news coverage with contempt, although the Brexitory party should be funding that part seeing as it's their PR department nowadays.

This exactly, Sky and Virgin could easily do a BBC/live-broadcast lite subscription. They wouldn't even really have to discount it if it meant you got out of the TV licence tax.

Was it exactly a pint or was there spillage? Maybe he used the excess to fill up a waterballoon to throw at the cat that comes and craps on your garden. Maybe it wasn't exactly a pint and trading standards' weights and measures department needed to be called. Is the threat of covering someone in urine a common occurrence in your lives? As goes for the bbc about time they did away with the payment for the license.

Now I dont mind a mast charge taken out of your council tax ( everyone pays for it ), as this still needs power to transmit its gigital signals.

To me it will force the bbc to conserve money, Instead of wasting it like it has done in all theses years of it running.

The last time they did was two years ago and my husband held a pint of piss in front of the guys face and told him the BBC weather forecast is heavy showers soon.

Why did your husband have a pint of piss at the ready?

Does he just keep one ready at the front door?

"I pay it, I'm happy to pay it.

Few reasons:

a) its cheap

b) the service you get for it is pretty amazing really.

c) along with things like the NHS, national services like this one work if everyone pays in.

d) In the current climate, there's probably no better source of news anywhere in the world (other than possibly Reuters)

No better source? Did you see the several lockdown protests that have happened in London reported on BBC news? Hundreds of thousands out in the centre of London and not a word on the beeb or other establishment media.

So what's the alternative?

The BBC should be subscription only or funded by adverts just like the rest of tv."

A better source of news?

The highest paid executive in 2019-20 was Tony Hall, the former director general. He received a total of £471,000 in salary and taxable benefits. This includes access to a car and driver.

There were a total of 253 senior leaders at the BBC in 2019-20. Their pay bill came to £37.5 million, or £148,221 on average.

Piers Wenger (controller, drama commissioning) was the second highest paid senior staff member not on the executive committee. He was paid £272,500. He claimed £130 on a night at a 4-star spa hotel outside Venice which has 68 different treatments. He also expensed £6,597 on a return flight to Los Angeles. The BBC has recently pledged £100 million of its TV budget to produce “diverse and inclusive content”.

Median earnings across the BBC were £45,500 in 2019-20. This is double median earnings in the North East of England and 83 per cent higher than median earnings across the UK (£24,897).

Technically, you are still required to have a television licence to watch foreign broadcasts if they are live transmissions.

i don't have a television and i don't watch tv programes via the internet. i listen to radio 6 occaisionally, for which there is no licence requirement. i stopped informing the licence people of my situation every two years. they sent a series of letters over the space of 9 months which i ignored. a licence guy came to visit not so long ago and i invited him in to verify we have no tv. he declined. since then i had another letter which i ignored. i can't be bothered with televisions, television programmes, licence inspectors or their letter's with overtones of bullying. i prefer to occupy my time in more meaningful ways.

If you watch anything live, including on Netflix, Prime etc., then a TV licence is still required by law.

Officially one may only watch catch-up services (excluding I-player, as that requires a license) and also never record any live programs, but I suspect many people say they don't watch / record live transmissions, but actually do!

I’m all for diversity but some people have clearly got their job at the BBC because they are box tickers rather than being the right person for the job

I think the BBC should be funded out of direct taxation via an independent, non partisan body. Everyone should pay, except the elderly. I daresay there are a handful of people who honestly don't use BBC services, which let's not forget is not only about TV but includes radio and online services and the pips you set your watch to, but it's like a library or a college: you might not use it but it's important to have it as a top quality public resource. If it were gone, you'll soon see the rest of the media dropping some of their less lucrative channels and services, and public service broadcasting will have to battle for little money as it does in the USA.

I can't bear these nasty lists of how much people earn. I've just been watching Gary Lineker present the England match for the BBC and his approach is brilliant. He's a presenter who knows his subject inside out because he was not just a minor league cloggie or an ex-journalist but a top international footballer. He explains things clearly and succinctly, and aims his remarks at a general audience who might not be well up on the game. He also keeps an amusing dialogue going, and as with the best TV presenters you feel you're in the presence of a good mate. See if you can think of anyone who could do the job better more cheaply - you won't be able to.

So do you think that if the BBC replaced Lineker with some other presenter on say £100k, people wouldn’t have watched the England game? Or Match Of The Day?

Of course they would. They aren’t watching it because Lineker is presenting it, they are watching it because they want to see the football.

I do pay my license because I watch live tv, I do watch some BBC content, although very little, but why wouldn’t I as I’m forced to pay for it?

Given the choice I’d happily forego watching the BBC and not pay the license fee.

It’s like having to pay a fee to Sainsbury’s, even if you only ever shop in Tesco.

I think some do not realise that the TV licence is not all about live TV.

If you view or listen to any BBC funded content live or recorded on any device tv, computer, phone etc. You should pay for your licence.

National radio1,2,3,4,4extra,5,5live,6,world service

BBC 1,2,4 TV

BBC iplayer

BBC sounds

Whether you like it or not, they produce a vast amount of content which most would not realise or see on an everyday occurrence.

I don't particularly like paying for it but if I look at the cost structure for sky, virgin, Amazon or Netflix, the cost is comparable to those services.

I watch and listen enough to BBC content to justify the cost.

"I think some do not realise that the TV licence is not all about live TV.

I watch and listen enough to BBC content to justify the cost."

The BBC only brodcast 10 live channels & I believe 1 internet channel that fall under the requirement for the tv licence. What gives them the right for demanding money for watching any of the other several free to air programmes? How would you feel if you went to the shop and was charged for something because it was on the

shelf, wether you chose to put it in your basket or not? The BBC should be put behind the counter with the fags, & only sold to those that specifically ask for it.

Unless they were prepared to share the licence fee with all other broadcasters, which probably means they'd loose over 80% revenue. Common sense seems lacking regarding this issue imho

Totally agree,

Nobody should be forced to pay for utter crap and line the pockets of greedy executives. I don't pay either.

The bbc have made some of the greatest shows ever made

Personally I'm quite happy to pay a few quid a week to watch the likes of fawlty towers, blackadder, only fools and horses, partridge etc

As a poster said above.

Presumably no one complaining watched the match last night?

If you watch anything live, including on Netflix, Prime etc., then a TV licence is still required by law.

Officially one may only watch catch-up services (excluding I-player, as that requires a license) and also never record any live programs, but I suspect many people say they don't watch / record live transmissions, but actually do!

In a related context, my brother and his wife are currently converting a property in Central France, for their retirement soon.

Under French legal arrangements, there's an annual broadcasting fee to cover all television and Radio transmissions. That fee is issued by their Government, and he only discovered it recently when, because of travel restrictions in/out of the UK & abroad, he enquired if he could get a refund on the period he couldn't travel.

Simple answer was NO!

Their legal view is everyone pays a flat fee for the year. If at any stage you don't watch or listen to media, there's no refund.

Maybe a general broadcasting fee element out of taxes would be a better option, dealt with directly by the Inland Revenue.

I find it quite interesting the licence fee has been around for decades, and has only in the last few years, become an issue.

In completely unrelated news, the gmnt has decided in the last few years, the bbc are too 'critical'

Absolute coincidence I'm sure.

Don’t disagree about those programmes. But how many were made in the last, say 20 years?

The BBC may have made the best tv in the world 30 years ago, but those days are long gone.

Why would anyone complain about watching the match last night? I’m forced to pay for the license so why shouldn’t I have watched it? Would it have made any difference to anybody if it had been on ITV?

But surely Ian, doesn’t that just bring up the same arguments that people are having here.

Those who don’t watch telly in any format will still be paying.

At least here you can legitimately not pay for a license if you do not require one.

I know a lot of people don’t pay who should but that’s a different issue.

£90,000,000 (90 MILLION) to rebuild the east enders set.

Live sport rammed down the throat (replacing normal scheduled programming) of people who have no interest when they have a dedicated sport channel.

Reality TV

Saturday evening schedule.

Just some of the reasons we have not paid the licence fee in about 5 years and stick to netflix and other streaming services. The BBC sell their programes on to the streaming services in the end anyway.

The only BBC show I have watched in the past... 5 years (give or take) is His Dark Materials, of which it was a joint creation with HBO. I would have survived not watching it. Doctor Who was (key word, was) the only other BBC show I enjoyed.

I don't watch it any other time. In fact I don't watch any of the scheduled broadcast channels.

I dislike sport. So don't watch that on any channel either, even on the streaming services like Amazon.

The BBC is the best PSB in the world and is respected across the globe - all my foreign friends wish they had something of its quality in their home country.

I'd happily pay the licence fee for the service it provides, not to mention catering certain programs to audiences that wouldn't have anything on other channels due to them operating to merely make a profit.

I very happily pay for it, as the diversity and quality is so good. I'd pay it just for Radio 4 and BBC 4 TV.

I'd strongly support a reduced fee for lower income, say 1/3 of the price maximum.

I dislike Capita etc and their tactics to strongarm people in to paying. And how they communicate a presumption of guilt, not innocence.

The BBC should be protected at all costs, as a unique public service. I'd support others, such as Sky, being taxed more to pay towards it.

Didn’t see that. But yes anyone could present it. I’m sure the vast majority of people would watch it no matter who was presenting, it’s the football they’re interested in, not the presenters.

I’ve never paid, you simply remove implied right of access by doing it on their website without putting your personal details such as name, dob and only put the address and renew every two years.

I'm pro-beeb. They do some great documentaries, top drama, and I think it's great we've got a news service which has some level of accountability. Even though the BBC Trust has been an organ of the tories for years, the BBC is far more accountable than any other major news organisation.

"

The BBC should be protected at all costs, as a unique public service. I'd support others, such as Sky, being taxed more to pay towards it. "

Why should I, or anyone else have to pay extra for Sky, just because you like the BBC? Let them stand on their own two feet, support themselves through ads or subscription, If they’re as good as people keep trying to tell me, they’d have no problem attracting subscribers.
