EURO 2020 Quarters Day 1 : And then there were 8

Here we go then, after a couple of days off to catch our breath and desperately scour the UEFA ticketing site for potential tickets it’s back to the action today!

Four Quarter-Finals over the next two days starting tonight with two games to decide who will meet in the Semi-Final at Wembley next Tuesday.

Fancied Spain play Faniced France’s conquerers Switzerland at 5pm, then later at 8pm it’s Fancied Belgium vs Fancied Italy!

Two cracking games ahead .. Spain have hit some cracking form with 10 goals in the last 2 games after a slow start, and should be too good Switzerland ... BUT .. we said that about France, didn’t we?

Then Belgium v Italy is arguably the tie of the round, the World’s current Number 1 team against the 4-time World Cup Winners. That one looks too close to call and surely would have been a worthy Final.

My predictions?

Spain 2-0 Switzerland

Belgium 1-1 Italy (Belgium win on pens)

Who do you think will win?

Where will the headlines be made today?

Yaaaaay!!!!

I’ve been getting withdrawals from football and this thread OP.

I hope that you’ve suitably recovered from Tuesday?

I’m still unconvinced about Spain, yes they put 5 past Croatia but several of those were gifted and they look remarkably toothless in attack for all of their possession. I think that an organised team will give them a real game.

Switzerland 2 - Spain 2 (Switzerland on Penalties)

This game I’m really excited for and it’s going to be all about small moments and tiny actions to make the difference.

The fact that this is Belgium’s second ‘final’ in a row might have an influence as well.

Belgium 1 - Italy 1 (Belgium on Penalties)

I would love Switzerland to go through but I think Spain will be too much, a tight game.

Later match it’s Belgium for me

Thank you yes all good now after Tuesday .. what a day that was! But of course the smile could be wiped off my face after a very tough game tomorrow ..

I think you have a great point about Belgium, their path to the final is probably the toughest of the lot, Portugal, Italy, potentially Spain then the Final itself .. potentially 4 “Finals” in a row!

Who’s watching and where?

Well against the odds Switzerland have taken it to extra time, but down to 10 men. Can they hold on for penalties?

Would be seismic if they can knockout France and Spain in successive rounds.

Or have I just jinxed them by saying that?

You absolutely have!

The Swiss are dicing with disaster by inviting Spain onto them. I quite fancied them to nick the game but it’s looking less likely

It’s not over until it’s over. Their goalie is being immense, the Spanish (so far) only there through an own goal and you’d expect them to be doing more

Penalties it is!

Who do you want to win?

Do Spain deserve it on balance of play or Switzerland on a superb rearguard action?

I’m rooting for the Swiss!

I absolutely agree that Sommer has been amazing, although the Spanish just can’t seem to finish a move.

I did think that they would struggle

Spain XOXOO

Switz OXXX

So SPAIN are out first semi-finalists after the penalty shootout! More misses than successes in the shootout! Spain win 3-1.

Well done to them, for a while it looked like Switzerland were going to be this years Wales, let’s hope that it isn’t Ukraine!

Spain v Belgium or Italy at Wembley next Tuesday for a place in the Final.

Whatever the outcome of the 2nd Quarter Final that’s going to be an epic game!

Italy looking very good, must be the favourites for the tournament the way they’ve played throughout if they can hold this.

Having said that poor game management to give that penalty away right before HT immediately after going 2-0 up ..

2-1 just about right at HT I think .. but will that late goal back fire up the Belgians for the 2nd half?

That Barella goal. Just watched the replay. He could have fell over and probably got a penalty but decided not to look for that, stand up, keep playing and put that fucker away. That's football.

Italy through to play Spain and World number 1 ranked team out! Belgium fail again.

What a semi final that will be!

This time tomorrow (barring extra time and penalties) we should know the full SF line up.. who will join them?!
