Both has it's benefits to be honest as adequate oxygen can help increase flow in your body likewise cooling you off outside.

A treadmill has specified focus on what you want. I will say both..

Even the treadmills with TV screens are not for me. I'd much rather get out and about in the fresh air

I prefer running outdoors whether on road or trails.

I have no interest to run on a treadmill.

Used to do the treadmill all the time but never now. I run on the road if I’m short on time but what I really prefer is trail running

Always hated the treadmill but as you get older the knees can't take the hard shocks from the road so treadmill takes over.

What is running?

Treadmill. I hate running, but opted for treadmill because it doesn't matter what the weather is, I can watch TV or listen to music, it's easier on the joints and I can push myself harder. You don't need motivation, just a desire not to fall on your face. However, due to lockdowns I switched to cycling and haven't gone back..

What about trail running? I usually find that easier on the knees.

Road/trail. Unless it's hammering it down, too hot or icey.

I preferred running outdoors although I found it hard on the knees, but I liked being outdoors. I used to be out the house by 06:30am so it was lovely and quiet.

Running on a treadmill and not actually getting anywhere is so monotonous.

I prefer trail running, immersed in nature, found some beautiful coastal paths to run and a trail that follows a river through woodlands and fields that goes on for miles, never knew it was there, once you start exploring theres loads of hidden gems on your doorstep, well there has been on mine anyway.

Like others said, trail running. Not only for views but also your knees.

Cartilige in my left knew has seen better days and my right is going the same due to years of abuse and many miles

Treadmill for warm ups in the gym for 10 mins or so if not that then the rower.

Road is my fave especially living be the sea I can run on the promenade for miles, great view, headphones in, can’t beat it.

All my PB’s are on road too.

Beach near me! Softer on the joints - treadmills just become so boring!

I’ll often do incline walk though on a treadmill, if i need to get in like 40 mins of cardio.

There’s some great trails in the Peak District between Sheffield and Stilockport. One I do regularly, Edale up onto kinder scout at 600m, the last 20 mins you climb a waterfall , along the ridge, fantastic views then descend down Jacob’s ladder and back to Edale about an 8 mile loop.

I want to try an air assault type treadmill though. Has anyone had any experience with them?

I've always preferred the treadmill because I'm terrible at keeping my own pace.

couple, us we him her.

A treadmill is a tool, good for monitoring progress as you can control the conditions every time.

Also good for warm weather training in the winter if your race is abroad in our winter, nothing worse than training outside all winter, traveling abroad for a race and dnf due to heat exhaustion.

But given the option always road, well actually off road nothing beats getting good and muddy or running through a forest in spring early morning when the bluebells are flowering.

Trail running was fun but we live in a city these days. I was an athlete and running 120 plus miles a week I training takes out of you hence knackered knees. I was lucky to avoid serious injuries in my younger days and these days fitness is for fun and keeping the weight off not as a competitive sport.

Do what makes you happy and healthy.
