Can a half empty person become a half full person?

Do we all have a emotional set point?

I’m a realist and risk assessments are key to my work life so if I observe that the likelihood of failure is greater than success I’ll call it out no matter how much I want it to succeed. It’s always pleasant to be proved wrong in that scenario. And obviously the reverse is true

I'm a realist, the half empty/full question all comes down to what your starting point. If you started off empty, then it's half full, but if you started off full then it's half empty. If it was always half, then the glass is too big.

If we are shown empathy, congruence and unconditional regard, I believe so.

What ever you look for in life you tend to find.

So if you go looking for the negative in every situation you are more likely to find it, not because that's all that's there but because it suits your world view to ignore the positives and tofocus on the negatives.

I'm a realist but I prefer to appreciate the half full glass.

Positivity is far more fun than relentless negativity.

Pretty much this!

Life throws enough shit at us all, why go looking for more?

I’m a realist and very much if life throws you lemons, grab the vodka have a swig and best foot forwards. You’ll only beat it or enjoy it, if you have the will to do so

Difference between an optimist and a pessimist is the optimist has a better time.

I’m definitely an optimist

Up on them there hills

Suspect OP, if it’s less than full, you drink what’s left and embrace the experience with as much experience and enjoyment you can.

Would hate to think my headstone was carved with, ‘I thought about it’.

'Hey! I ordered a cheeseburger.' (Far Side, 'The Four Basic Personality Types')

But seriously isn't it better to walk the tightrope between optimism/pessimism? Be optimistic about some things and pessimistic about others.

I think most people sit somewhwere between the two (and optimism/pessimism like many other personality 'traits' is probably a spectrum) and being at the extreme end of either is not always a good thing.

With a change of perception and a lot of work getting there, yes it can happen.

Too often though, people are comfortable, finding the inner work too difficult.

I’ve always been optimistic and surrounded myself by optimists for that rub off effect, but recently been reading a book about the value of perceiving reality exactly as it is, so practicing being a bit grumpy

Is this Schrodinger's half person?

You can have optimism, realism and pessimism at the same time and they're not necessarily mutually exclusive

I would say I'm more of a realist and can limit my expectations but never lose optimism. Guess that would make me half and half. It is possible to change your mind set but it depends on what's happening in your life that usually tips the balance.
