I think the podium for the yellow jersey will be either Thomas or Carapaz, Pogacar, Roglic. The amount of time trailing will see off any possible upset from the others. I think Porte is the only one who could pull off a surprise.

Stage one is perfect for the puncheurs, so I’d go with Van der Poel, Van Aert or Alaphilppe.

"The first rider across the line usually wins a race."

Not in a grand tour, the first rider screws the line just wins on that day, and then you factor on all the other sun sections like the mountain points, sprints and even best young rider, it’s got something for everyone

Local to us again so this will be our 13th tour we’re we get things thrown at us by the caravan which is the only reason we go!!

No idea and don’t care who will win it’s just fun to watch for us.

Good to hear!

As for who's going to win, my heart says G but his bad luck follows him everywhere, hopefully he hides from it like 2018 and puts in another "It's Alpe Duez man" performance. Praying Cav gets a stage or two too

A rider could win Le Tour without winning a stage, it’s the collective time over 3 weeks of racing.

To be fair most pro cyclists are as hard as nails, training in all weather's same with racing.

Race and train with horrendous crash injuries, fearless as well.

Riding in a bunch at high speed is not for the feint hearted.

The answer is a Slovenian… just not decided which yet!!

The weird thing about this year is that there are 3 teams with GC contenders… and all the other teams are set up for breakaways…

Basically it’s going to end up being how many people are ineos going to try and throw to get “a Slovenian” to crack

Good to see Cav back this year. But can he really beat Merckx' record of Stage wins? I'd like to think so.

Obviously, I'd love to see G win again. Or Simon Yates. But will it be Tadejar/Podesca (I'm sure that spelling is wrong!) again. Have Ineos run out of fire power? X

I’d fancy G or even Chris Frome over this Olympic time trial course.. it is 45k of up and down.. it’s not flat!

As for the Olympic road race… either climber who can sprint.. like a alaphilippe… or a sprinter who can climb Like a Peter Sagan…

Don’t want to know what happened today, I’ll watch it later, but I’ve named 3 riders who have won the first stage two stages, Van der Poel was immense yesterday, to pick up the bonus seconds then come back round again and win on that climb was unreal, i dunno what other rider in history could do that, no one probably.

Yeah gives the GC contenders an unofficial day off.

Still you can't switch off in a pelaton of that size as we have seen by some of the silly crashes since Saturday, lose concentration overlap or touch a wheel.

I think if Break's the record after this tour he will hang up his cycling shoes.

If he doesn't then I think he will try to return next year I can't see him jacking it in so close to the record.

Textbook ride today.

HUGE stage tomorrow for everyone.

They are a magical team to watch, they look after each other a team made for Cav. If they get over the mountains tomorrow he will get the record and he deserves it.

The best part of it all is to see how much he's enjoying it too. From the lows he's gone through in the last year or two, the guy deserves every acolade he's getting ATM, and I hope he gets Merx's record THEN wins on the Champs too!

Outstanding athlete, probably more impressive a feat than the British (African) winners of the yellow jersey who could only manage a handful of stage wins between them…

Blimey that was a killer stage, fast breakaways, too fast to sustain, Van Aert climbing like a champ, Pogacar looking like he’s having a lovely ride out with his mates till the last 3k

And poor Tony Martin, ohhh that looked painful

Great win today by the young American rider, to hold off valverde on a descent is no mean feat.

Stunning course again, GC is getting a bit boring now as its clear no-one has the legs to catch Pogacar.

Tend to agree the GC has been pretty boring thanks to all the withdrawals and injuries, but I don't think a fit G would be able to compete with poj.

The course has livened up the race plus riders like van aert make it exciting.

I don’t understand why Pogacar was setting the pace and letting Carapaz sit on, the other two had to push on to knock Uran off the podium, Pogacar could have sat on And then attacked in the last km, not that it mattered, he won anyway.

On this form he looks to like he's going to dominate for the next few years.

I’ve quite enjoyed the fact that INEOS hasn’t bossed it even tho I usually support them, DQT has been amazing in how they have supported Cavendish not to mention Pogacar’s team even tho he rides off and does his own thing sometimes

"To be fair most pro cyclists are as hard as nails, training in all weather's same with racing.

Race and train with horrendous crash injuries, fearless as well.

Riding in a bunch at high speed is not for the feint hearted.

They really make footballers look like a right bunch of Nan's.

Without doubt the hardest sport in the world, nothing comes close. "

Ride Across America/RAAM that's nearly 3000 miles (not Kilometres) done in 13 days. It's a solo event, with minimum support and zero sleep, just plenty of 5-minute-comas.

Imagine pedalling the whole of Route 66 in less than 2 weeks.

Yes, it's that insane and this is what the Tour de France was like in the early days.

After th massive crashes yesterday one rider got back on his bike and finished the stage.... With two broken arm's!!!

Ok so he's pulled out of the race now but but footballers roll around on the ground crying for half an hour if they get grass stains on their shorts.

This is how Greg Lemond took the title 3 times: the only American to win the tourby turning a 52 second deficit into an 8 second lead on the final day in Paris.

Google '8 seconds in July'

He is the only guy to argue against Bernard Hinault and win.

Google 'Slaying the Badger'

The period 1986-1989 were the best years for me, when it came to watching the tour on telly.

To see Cav cross the finish line first again, in paris can only be topped by, meeting Eddy Merkx and seeing those two greats shaking hands on the podium. That would be magic and truly iconic.

It was my training circuit.

Head out through St. Helens, towards crank, shaley brow, aplley bridge, parbold back over ashurst beacon and back along the rainford by pass.

If I was lucky, Joey Mcloughlin would join me for a few miles before dropping me easily.

I was at Liverpool when he rode in, he stopped after crossing the finishing line, the rest of the race had to complete 5 laps of the town centre.

Wow!

I met Joey when coming out of the cinema, when Rainman was on. I wished him luck for the upcoming season's races.

I met him again in Liverpool, I had a flat front tyre, when, he walked into the building's entrance after finishing the Tour Of Brtain stage.

As for riding, I was riding with my mates and St Helens CRC on the East Lancs road heading back towards the traffic lights at Carr Mill Dam/Laffak, when Manchester Wheelers/ Liverpool CC (The memories are blurred a bit), when they shot past.

I tried to do a breakaway, cause I was daft enough to, but it was a pointless spud-catching exercise as they were motoring at 25mph+ verses my 19mph, whilst the others behind me were just cruising at 16mph. Never did catch that lot and didn't want to slow down either.

Who was riding in that group? Some Cat 1 amateur who was about to get his Elite licence, called Chris.

Yup, Chris Boardman, no wonder they were too fast for me...

It's rather humbling when you come up against an elite athlete, they truly are on a different level.

I remember many years ago I was on a fast training run through Richmond park I was much fitter and faster than I have ever been.

Well the Kenyan national team including Moses Kiptanui

Used a flat strawberry hill near Twickenham when training in the UK.

One of their runs was through Richmond park they would drive up and do laps.

So I'm pegging it at full tilt doing some timed 1k intervals.

When ten guy's blasted past me like I was standing still barely breaking a sweat.

Just awe inspiring seeing them run.

I also used to train with a few world class triathletes who went on to win numerous titles at world levels.

Just training alongside these people even as juniors on a completely different planet.

Chapeau to van aert for winning.

The only excitement was the battle for 2nd and 3rd.

But still entertaining , time trial was always my favourite thing to do although I'm totally crap at it,I think it's the ultimate test you can't hide in the bunch it's you against the clock.

Massive congratulations to Pogacar.

And the young lad in second who's name I can't spell lol.

Very entertaining tour for many reasons away from the GC race.

All eyes on Paris and the possibility of cav overtaking the 34 stage win's to make cycling history.

But that's taking nothing away from van aert a stunning finish to what has been a fantastic tour for him.

True.

At least he got to meat Eddy and share a precious we-are-the-best-of-eras moment. Priceless.

He repaid the faith in he team by his performance and getting over the mountains. Are they getting harder every year? 2022 will be the year Cav gets to say "I'm better than Eddy!". So that will be a tour to watch.

As for the new kids: this is truly a new era, the race for the white jersey might see some serious competition.

couple, us we him her.

"Damn!! Van Aert over the line first, Pogacar still in yellow (nothing new there then )

Great Tour this year, Chapeau to all the teams

Cav just slightly out of position about 350m, lost it when he had to briefly stop peddling.

But that's taking nothing away from van aert a stunning finish to what has been a fantastic tour for him.

Future GC contender??

But huge applause to Pogacar who's flawless performance has been well above what you would expect from a man/lad his age.

Great 3 weeks being on the Olympics

Yep, he was completely out of position, you could see him trying to decide which way to go, next year maybe?

Absolutely gutted for him, you could see he had more left to accelerate, just not the room. I'm adamant, even with the show Van Aert put on, Cav would have taken it if he didn't get penned in.

Such a great tour (all bar the horrific crashes), the new kids on the block are taking over!!

Chapeau Cav, for getting the green jersey!

I think his whole team spirit an pulling together to make it happen was a highlight if the tour for me "

Is roglic good enough to contend?

I'm starting to think he may have missed his opportunity last year.

I honestly think Pogacar would still be in yellow, just a great all rounder in this year’s Tour, hold on tight for next year is all I can say
