I was planning on driving to Cornwall for hols in a few weeks time, and that would involve transporting suitcases full of shut I don’t actually need. But if vehicles are banned from the roads then I am fucked, 250 mile cycle with suitcases. |

The legal framework isn’t in place for electric scooters. If they are taxed, insured, riders have licenses and are subject to the rules of the road (and banned from pavements), then fine.
If they are zipping all over the place, no tax, no insurance, no accountability, no safety, not fine.
Grey area at the moment, needs massive tightening up.

They are ancient, pink and American. I have put funny things through the holes.
I LOVE them.
I've never been out of the house in them except to put the bins out. I do the garden in them. I mop floors and clean cars in them.
They have never worn out and I stick em in the washing machine.

Jimmy, you're conflating two different issues. Cyclists are subject to the same rules of the road as everyone else. If they break the rules, and are caught doing so, they should be treated the same way as any other road user. I don't think anyone would disagree with that.
Road tax was abolished in 1937. What drivers pay is Vehicle Excise Duty (VED). The amount depends on the vehicle's carbon dioxide emissions, with owners of low-emission vehicles (Band A) paying nothing. Since bicycles are zero emission, cyclists would pay nothing even if bicycles were subject to VED. Note that VED is not ring-fenced for roads, just as the tax on alcohol doesn't directly pay for alcohol-related illnesses. Roads are paid for out of: general taxation, which includes everything from income tax to duty on booze; and local taxation, which is to say, Council Tax. If you pay tax, you pay for roads. What we pay is Vehicle Excise Duty which is based on emissions. Bicycles are zero emission and therefore zero cost. Roads are funded by general taxation and so cyclists contribute just as much as car drivers and so have equal right to use the road.
It is possible for a cyclist to lose their driving license or be held responsible for any damages caused. For this reason many cyclists do have insurance. |

Vehicles are taxed. Bikes aren’t.
Re accountability of cyclists, in theory they are subject to the rules of the road, but in practice they are very rarely punished. Skipping lights, cycling along pavements, lack of lights, you name it. The rules are there but it just doesn’t happen.
As an occasional (responsible) cyclist myself, I don’t think the lack of accountability is right. Many cyclists (not all) think they can do whatever the hell they want on our roads and pavements. |

What about pedestrians crossing the road ban them as well?
Horse's?
Dog's, cat's, wildlife, people on disabled scooters?
And what about the hundreds of thousands of children who ride to school every day what are they supposed to do?
Or the old lady who uses her bike to ride to the shop?
Someone who is on low income or unemployed but still needs to get around?
If you want to make an issue about cycling then what you should do is promote safer cycling starting with compulsory cycling proficiency lessons at School at primary school age , installing safer road sense with bikes provided by the government for pupils who can't afford bikes to learn on. |

Someone who is on low income or unemployed but still needs to get around?
If you want to make an issue about cycling then what you should do is promote safer cycling starting with compulsory cycling proficiency lessons at School at primary school age , installing safer road sense with bikes provided by the government for pupils who can't afford bikes to learn on."

I have cycled all my life as soon as I could! I go miles on mine(might have a ride out today) i find it second in pleasure to sex tbh! Love the free feeling! never driven! But equally as many bad car drivers I see on their mobiles cutting me up etc., yes course there bad cyclists as there is bad vehicle users! x |
