Emergency alarm testing...

Jump to: Newest in thread

By (user no longer on site) OP     over a year ago

So today at 1pm the new emergency alarm system to rolled out this summer will be tested.

Anyone with an android device could receive an emergency message and a loud sound coming from their mobile device.

This is nothing to be alarmed about just a test.

Iv only just heard about this.

Does anyone else think this is all a bit Orwellian? Like a lot of things lately.

Those alert things that people get on their phones usually in America look pretty cool. Maybe not cool as they are warnings about tornados and dust storms and stuff but cool how they do it.

"Does anyone else think this is all a bit Orwellian? Like a lot of things lately."

Not really.

It does actually make sense when you read about it and most other countries already have something like this.

Thats the sort of think it will be warning about but more likely things like floods or a major incident.

"Does anyone else think this is all a bit Orwellian? Like a lot of things lately."

It is simply a warning for major incidents in the area of your phone signal. Most countries already have these in place, we are a little behind the times on this one.

Does it? What's wrong with news bulletins? Why does the government need direct access to your phone?

In France it's now illegal to film the police with your phone. What goes on in other countries isn't always cool. To me anyway. Maybe it is just me, but I find it all concerning.

Definitely.

Also it doesn't go by phone numbers but phone masts so anyone who is radius of the affected area gets noticed and often followed very quickly by what to do next.

If they are trying to warn you about a potential danger in the area where you are a news bulletin is no good if you are away from a TV or radio.

They are not tracking you it simply goes to phones in the area of the signal sent out.

As someone else has already said it works on phone masts not phone numbers.

Didn't get an alert, I don't think. But then .I work in an environment where phones are banned by law, so guess we'd all be totally oblivious to whatever danger we were being warned about!!

"Does anyone else think this is all a bit Orwellian? Like a lot of things lately."

Not at all. It's an emergency broadcast system, no knowledge about who gets sent to. The carrier will simply cell broadcast the alert which is picked up on the device if it is logged as attached to the network.

In Netherlands they have a legal requirement that in the event of a detected accident, your device alerts to a central system your GPS co-ordinates so that emergency services can be alerted.

No conspiracy here

They probably do it on as many platforms as possible if its an emergency.

My car and a lot of modern vehicles have this technology in place. If I have an accident and my phone is connected it calls 999 automatically and tells them where I am.

It says some mobile phone networks will have tested today. No alert for me. What is interesting is no mention of iPhones - are Apple users just going to be sacrificed?
