I once almost walked into a vertical gully on a mountain in Scotland in a terrifying horizontal rain squall. One of those literally teetering on the brink moments.

That I can't even imagine. Most of my scrapes have been self-inflicted. I can't really put myself into the space of being at somebody else's whim.

I'd say a few near misses. All very split second instances, all instances were I'd not really had time to process until after. All instances where luckily I've come off unharmed. So at the time I was just reacting rather than understanding how close I was. I've realised how lucky I am. Unfortunately I've also seen that some poor sausages haven't had the same luck. To be fair its not really had much impact on me. I've got on things and just been thankful. Never given these events much thought. Maybe it'd be different if I was left with life changing injuries or in a situation where I had time to process the grave possibility of death and been powerless to do anything?

That moment just before my car crashed I was thinking oh shit, I know what’s the other side of those barriers, a massive lake and it was January and the temperature was showing -9 on the car. Was years ago when I had my Nissan 350Z, bombed passed loads of people on the dual then hit black ice on a roundabout and car just lost it, rear wheel drive as well, done a handstand in the car and luckily it stayed on the barriers and didn’t go over cos I would’ve been in the water and I can’t swim at all!

Smashed into the back of a lorry after aquaplaning in a storm back in my teens. Somehow the bonnet crumpled in such a way that it stopped the car going under the lorry.

Multiple times fighting the thoughts in my head telling me no one would miss me if I was gone. In therapy now and confronting my demons so much stronger than I used to be

The amount of OD stories surprises me a little, dunno why.

I spent a lot of time around people and substances when younger and don't really know what stopped me from joining in and going down that hole, being I have a fairly addictive nature. I did mess with stuff but none of the super addictive ones.

Yes. On several occasions during my life!

Very sobering experiences, including near death experience as a train was being transported onto a ferry in Scandinavia; a massive rock was thrown at my car and bounced off the bonnet; an IED exploded nearby; shots fired from automatic weapon in my direction; a burning chip fryer exploded when it came into contact with water; a slate fell from a tall building and shattered at my feet; a car entered a one way system and narrowly avoided me; a 4x4 crashed into me headon; and several others that are too painful to recall!

I am fortunate to have survived thus far!

Several moments climbing up those kinds of gulleys on ice where I've been one crampon point from a big fall.

Closest I came was after an assault - two guys used my head as a football and left me unc0nscious on my back with a throat full of my own blood. Fortunately a witness rolled me into the recovery position. Apparently the sound I made as she approached was the same as the last breath her grandad took

i, and, had a serious motorbike crash while racing, ended up in traction for 6 monthe and over 40 pins in me, all thankfully removed apart from 2, i remember waking up in hospital unable to move, scared the shit out of me, i had to learn to walk again and everything, one good thig tho, i can tell when its going to rain lol

Yeah a car accident. My car was hit by a 40t lorry at 40mph. My car left the ground and rolled twice. Slow-mo doesn't even cut it for the experience of being in the air and rolling. I was fortunate to be broadly unhurt and I attribute that to the fact the car was a 5* NCAP safety rated one. I will only buy high NCAP rated cars now. It's left me with some back problems but not too much else.

I was in the back seat of an old mini that got crushed between a bus and a pick up truck.

I had no seat belt on (classic car so it didn't have them in the back) and I was thrown into the roof over the driver's seat as back seat flattened up against it. Ended up laying across the top of the seats.

If I had a belt on, I doubt I'd have made it out of that.

I nearly drowned when I was 9. Went down a waterslide headfirst (despite all the signs saying not to) whilst on holiday, flew off the end of it and smashed my head into the wall of the pool. I knocked myself out briefly. I remember coming to, lying on the bottom of the pool, looking up at a reflection of myself and thinking how peaceful it was. But I'm glad I was hauled out and had more life to live.

Of course I have. Born and bred in Northern Ireland it would be difficult to avoid.

Been lifted off my feet or knocked flat numerous times with bombs going off 100 yards away.

Been hijacked 10 times and had a gun pressed to my head and bundled into the back of my vehicle on half of those occasions.

Fell 40 feet from a tree when I was 16, bounced on a low branch and landed on my feet.

I could write a book.

The more I think of it, I've had a few "near misses" in my time, mostly down to miss-spent youth. From being run over 3 times, almost falling off a crane, been electrocuted more than once, a close call in inland sea strong current, 3 car crashes, the first in which the car rolled, second the impact took the engine out of car. It's a wonder I'm still here! Thank God for Xbox live, at least i know my boys are safe at home!

Had more than a few very close calls, mostly ended up without a scratch on me. As I've got older I've tried to be a bit more careful, luck can't last forever.

My only real encounter with death though was sitting with my mum at the end in hospital. I hope I never have to do that with anyone again, maybe I'm just too sensitive to this stuff and overthink everything, but I've not been the same person since.

Years ago in my teens a group of friends were cycling over the Tay bridge. We had been stopped from cycling on the footpath which runs safely between the 2 carriageways. So here's a group of teens cycling on the road part which also had roadworks at the time. The bridge isn't a very wide bridge so we had to be right in to the side. I got too close to the side though and my pedal clipped it causing me to veer wildly to the right, traffic managed to miss me as I veered back to the left and towards the road works which had the side of the bridge out. Its scary how close I was to going over the side and plunging in to the river below.

Twice that stand out the most clearly for me are rolling my girlfriends dad's car that I'd borrowed, its strange how slowly it all happens at the time.

Smashing glass feels like rain hitting your face as you are looking at a huge tree rushing towards you while you spin over and over.

The other one was a wonderful ex of 12 years invited her nephew round to point a gun at my head while telling me that if I left that my mum would die after I did. And she is why those narcissistic controlling cunts are the ones I abhor most on this earth.

Jeez they do say a cat has 9 lives...I've had more than that... Not my scariest near death experience...But back in the mid 90s... I was in a car with 2 male friends...We took the back roads after a night out... The driver thought & behaved like he was a rally driver...

Anyway we were driving over a hilly area & all of a sudden the car spun & toppled & landed on its roof...I was the back seat passenger...My 2 mates were able to get out of the car no probs...but both back doors would not open...the next thing, I smell petrol... & I screamed get me out now I smell petrol... Within seconds they knew both back doors were jammed...I'm lying upside down on my head...I don't know where they got their strength from but they lifted the car & got it on its side... I climbed to the front seat & got out left passenger door... the driver said run & as all 3 of us ran from the car wreck...it `exploded` & went up in flames... Not a scratch did I have

I've had quite a number of lucky escapes, including: being pulled out to sea in a kayak and losing sight of land;

having a gun pulled on me;

being hit by a lorry on my motorbike and dragged down the road underneath it;

being in a house fire (twice);

back seat passenger when the driver had a heart attack and died...

Quite a few others.

It's amazing how everything goes in to slo-mo and how you gain a seemingly superhuman strength and resolve.

Its how I know that anything is possible, and how we are all far more capable than we believe.

Two many times count, been in two vehicle blasts one leaving me hospitalised and operations to remove pieces from my body. numerous shoots and indirect fire attacks.

Had one incident parachuting where I had to use my reserve chute. (Happens more often than you think)

Been threatened by African militia wielding machetes.

Yeah feb 23 rd 1993,Horrible work accident, massive loss of blood, sat there waiting on the Ambulance, forcing my self to stay awake, knowing that if i shut my eyes, i would never open them again, Had several surgeries, spent months in hospital and hey ho here we are, Two sons,, granson, and a Granddaughter weeks away. Some really Amazing and sad stories in here, so i Mabey see this a wee different, i see this as a survivors thread, i truly believe, we all survived for some other purpose, GB

Child : nearly drowned

Army : uncomfortably close to explosions, shot at, and a few incidents when training recruits on ranges, had an epaulette button shot off by a recruit with a sub machine gun, one recruit brought an unexploded grenade to me that he'd found.

Helicopter crash, nearly drowned with equipment weighing me down

Nhs: stabbed by a d*unk in a&e, when i was a nurse

Car: guy crashed into the back of me, managed to climb out of window as door was jammed, into a pool of petrol and was dripping wet with it so took clothes off before getting burnt.

Once i out cycling, was along some cliffs. Looking down at the drop, I thought living is hard & if i went over thst would put all my problems behind me. , but turned back

If people are familiar with Gibraltar I fell out one of the firing holes in the rock when climbing up them. Luckily it was one on the west side of the rock over some trees which I landed in with barely a scratch. If it had been the North face I would have been dead.

Still very lucky and a long fall though.

Yep had sepsis, stopped breathing was revived and placed in a medically induced coma for 2 weeks, had to learn to walk again due to muscle wastage, spent 8 weeks in hospital and rehab getting back to normal.

I suffered a cardiac arrest when I was younger, outside of hospital too, and I think only one in 10 patients survive that.

So essentially i have died and I'm still paying for it now, which I deserve as I wasn't looking after myself when it happened.

Yep I have a Apprentice sprayed me with petrol which caught somehow fire when I was defuelling a vehicle I was covered head to top in Burning fuel. I just accepted this wasn't going to end well ...somehow I was not even burnt so someone was looking over me that day

Yes. Once on a flight taking off from Miami to London. Hit something on take off, circled for a few hours burning off fuel then emergency landing back in Miami with the front wheels not to working. Brace, people praying and wailing, lights off in the plane, emergency services chasing plane down the runway and oddly a request for everyone to put their passport in their trouser pocket. I subsequently found out this is to aid with identifying your body. Survived (obviously) got a free night in a lovely hotel and watched a space shuttle launch from the balcony of our hotel while drinking free booze. Not all bad

Many years ago had a wheel explode on me when blowing up the tyre it flew into the air and landed on my head left me with some head injuries for a while but never remembered anything about it, always embarrassed about waking up in hospital with black filthy hands and dirt all over lol, another time was not really a near death experience but as a young child we were messing about in a derelict house I was in the loft all dark and fell through the ceiling felt like I was falling for miles and I experienced the sensation of all my previous life flashing before my eyes lol distinctly remember it ti this day , fall was about 8feet lol

We went diving off the Needles on the Isle of Wight. We were told visibility was great so in pairs we followed a rope down to the seabed 33m down to a wrecked liner.

However the other divers had kicked up the sand so we hit zero visibility. For what seemed like an eternity I was alone on the seabed. I lit my face torch but my buddy was gone. I thought about the possibility of a lone ascent but then in the gloom a face appeared. Nitrogen narcosis had kicked in so I was experiencing a mild d*unkenness as well.

We finned out of the gloom and over the dark wreck. After 30 dives I never went back. Around 30 divers were lost that season too I believe .

Pissed up on a rugby tour in the US. Returned to the hotel where we all decided to pile into the pitch black, outdoor pool, fully clothed.

Despite knowing I was a shite swimmer, I tried a quadruple somersault with seventeen and a half pikes off the spring board. Hit the water, think that winded me. All I can recall is the need to surface but being unable to work out what way was up! Surprisingly, I didn’t panic, just accepted my fate. It got darker and darker. Next thing I remember is I’m clinging onto the edge of the pool, puking water (and shite American beer) up.

None of the other lads had noticed, and no one claimed to have saved me.

1st one was self inflicted.

2nd was a rare ish occurance the could have resulted in death even though I had tried to prevent it happening.

Makes you go about life differently doesn't it and gives a totally different outlook.

Yes a few times.....

Client was killed by lightning, and I had to carry the body, the smell was awful!

Pulled a drowning victim from the sea and administered CPR, he died in hospital.

Close brush with an aggressive tiger shark.

Multiple incidents with venomous snakes.

Held hostage by armed gunmen for a couple of days before escaping.

A few other accidents and near misses, but the only time I ever truly felt that I'd looked death in the face was in the eyes that shark, and of a crocodile that was busy stalking me

I was dead after passing out and smacking my head on a concrete coping stone didn't feel a thing.

Didn't know a thing about it until some guy contacted me on Facebook telling me everything.

All I remember is coming round in the back of an ambulance thinking I was being kid

noppedd, forcing my way out running away got up the road and blacked out again and hit my head AGAIN.

Changed me and my life forever as my brain has never recovered from the Blow's I'm a different person now.

Nearly drowned when I was 16, and had to be resuscitated. Mid-air collision, been shot, couple of nasty car crashes. A few other less dramatic, but potentially life-threatening incidents. I'm probably pushing my luck. Seen a fair bit of death...just not mine yet.
