EURO 2020 Day 11: D-Day for the Danes

Congrats to Italy & Wales for qualifying from Group A yesterday and probably Switzerland too in 3rd place (but they’ll need to wait and see if they’re definitely through)

Today though, not only is it the Summer solstice but the longest day brings us the most daily matches (so far) with 4 games to look forwards to today with the conclusions of groups B & C

First up at 5pm is Group C, where the Dutch have already qualified and it’s between the rest for the places, realistically Ukraine & Austria fighting it out for 2nd and 3rd place

Then later at 8pm it’s Group B where’s the Danes need to beat Russia and hope that Finland lose to Belgium to take an unlikely 2nd place in the group after losing their first 2 games. Finland, meanwhile can ensure their progress if they get at least a draw v Belgium.

I predict :

Ukraine 1-2 Austria 5pm

N Macedonia 0-4 Netherlands 5pm

Finland 0-2 Belgium 8pm

Russia 1-1 Denmark 8pm

What are your predictions? Who will make the headlines today?

"I predict that they will all play better than England did "

To be fair though, England did play Scotland who (apparently, according to what I’ve been reading) won the tournament on Friday playing football the likes of which hasn’t been seen since the days of Cruyff, so a 0-0 draw against them was actually a creditable result!

Yeah, but they were playing England, winners of the Inter-Galactic All-Universe Cup in 1996, thanks to a fantastic goal from Gazza that, mystifyingly, never gets shown on TV.

The Scots, a limited side, deserve kudos for holding out against such a nation .

Fair point, I can see why they celebrated like they’d won the tournament now

2nd for Wales is a great result and they play the 2nd placed team in Group B .. who do you fancy? Probably Denmark or Russia (I’m assuming Belgium beat Finland)

Manchester (he/him)

Perhaps it’s something about the British mentality where a defeat is seen as a good thing but congratulations to Wales on a well deserved second place and a spot in the last 16.

Ukraine 2 - 2 Austria

N Macedonia 0 - 4 Netherlands

Finland 0 - 3 Belgium

Russia 1 - 2 Denmark

As a side note, these playing times are weird and the last 16 balance seems very odd, can we not bring back the winner vs second place rotation that used to be used? (Obviously I know that’s not possible but these permutations take far too much effort)

It’s hard work trying to sort it all out isn’t it? Some group winners play 3rd place teams, some 2nd place, then some 2nd places play 2nd places (such as Wales) .. it gives me a headache so I’ll let UEFA sort it and tell me who plays who at the end!

Those are my thoughts. I used to plan my viewing and route through the tournament prior to the start, now I just wait and see.

At least it won’t be for too long, in a few years the Euros will add another 8 teams and we’ll be back to understandable last 16 matchups!

I think that’s a bit wide of the mark.

Wales is a small footballing nation, which hadn’t qualified for a major championships for nearly 60 years before 2018. We were playing an excellent Italy side (OK, they did make changes). It’s not about single games - most teams that do well in tournaments have bumps along the way. England fans who booed on Friday should bear that in mind.

Getting to the finals - very good achievement

Getting out the group - excellent achievement

Getting through the QF - amazing achievement

Getting through the semi - unbelievable achievement

Winning it - OK, I’ll stop there

We’re pretty realistic about our capabilities .

When you’re through to the knockout stages anything can happen, look at Denmark when they won, Croatia in the last World Cup, I think Wales have a very winnable Last 16 game, whoever they end up getting, then it’s fair game there on as Wales proved last time!

I’d probably go with Russia, but I don’t really mind.

A part of me would be happy with Belgium. We’d definitely be big underdogs, but the Wales and Belgium fans have struck up an amazing rapport in recent years, and it would be an amazing weekend in Adam.

Netherlands v North Macedonia on ITV in a few mins. But as the Dutch are through and N Macedonia already out its effectively a dead rubber so I’ll be watching Ukraine v Austria on ITV4 as there’s more on the line in this one!

ITV getting it all wrong on this, of course as you’d expect from ITV, focussing on the ‘big name’ Dutch rather than the interesting game that counts and sticking that on a minor channel ...

Austria leapfrog Ukraine into 2nd place in the group in the game that really counts.

Full time and the Netherlands win comfortably as expected against group whipping boys N Macedonia to top the ground and secure a game in Budapest on Sunday, meanwhile Austria win the big one 1-0 to finish 2nd in the group and the first Round of 16 tie is confirmed: Italy v Austria at Wembley on Saturday evening

First time the Austrians have made the knockout stages of an international tournament since the 1950s!

Bit unfair on the N Macs, they only came undone in the last 10 minutes of the first 2 games and even today's score doesn't reflect their performance, 2 disallowed goals and hit the post

Don’t know yet, but the top 2 go through and the 4 best 3rd place teams. So far in Groups B and C (assuming no late shocks tonight!) the teams in 3rd place only got 3 pts from 3 games, so any team with 4pts already will definitely be through. Who they play, where and when still to be finalised!

Yeah. Did you see them trying to ring Eriksun after the match?

Had a year in my eye!

Poor Finland, though. Xx

So... that point vs Scotland puts England through to the knockout phase. Not such a bad result then?

It’s great but makes tomorrow night not so exciting.

Basically any 3rd place team that can get to 4 points will qualify for the next round … so Sweden, France, Switzerland and the Czech Republic also qualify as they can’t finish bottom of their groups….

"2 England players are isolating They’ve not said who though

They already did that on the pitch last week

Ben Chilwell & Mason Mount, seen hugging the Scottish laddie after the game on Friday, isolating as a precaution. "

I am guessing those 2 won’t play as a precaution tomorrow… so I am guessing trippier will play left back and grealish will come in for mount!

Also because 2 yellows will mean missing a game, and that doesn’t reset till after the quarters, foden will probably not play tomorrow either as he is the one player on a yellow and would miss the last 16 game if booked

I am a bit puzzled how two England players who whilst they did have contact with Gilmore certainly weren't in the sane dressing room with him ..
