Does the world become a better place for discussion, is that how we learn, does it help us to form opinion?
So many peeps seem to read the first 3 words of a sentence then let rip with their wee typo fingers without engaging the brain.
So, let’s see….
Question, can debate be debated and performed on this thread without it being turned toward ANYONE on a personal level.
No slander, no assumptions, keeping it factual. |

There's nothing wrong with debating and airing opinions. It's interesting to hear other's views whether you agree with them or not. People who are completely set in their ways turn to aggression when people can't be changed into their way of thinking, that's how things get out of control.
That's my opinion anyway, anyone disagrees? Come at me bro |

I don't think anyone does debate anymore. Everyone has their own opinion and they exert their opinion whenever they get the chance.
Rarely do you hear, "yeah, that's a good point, I never considered that", it is just 'I'm right, your wrong, now you're cancelled' arguments. |

The problem with the internet is lack of physical social cues and the way people can come at it from different angles - mainly emotional and unemotional.
If someone is 'debating' from an emotional point of view then they are more likely to get personal and be rigid in their view.
From an unemotional view you can keep civil and be more logical and flexible with your POV. |

Debate starts with opinion, then the reason for the opinion. The why is crucial to actual debate. Without the why, it's just a statement or a question. In my opinion that is, based on my personal experience of how people interact. |

My experience on fab is that when people disagree with a statement but can find no reasoning to counter it then resort to personal attacks on the poster. They try to undermine the person and not the argument.
There is another category of people who jump in with both feet without even try to read or understand the statement. These are the people who see any debate on something like BLM being racist, any debate on identity politics as being transphobic and throw accusations of hatrid like confetti .. |

So true and very eloquently written.
Isn’t it such a shame that this is so…. |

"Big difference between actually debating and being a provocateur.
Some people merely contribute strawman arguments and gaslight, they're not at all interested in debate, only entertainment."
And here in lies the problem with the internet and social media. An actual debate requires discourse and an understanding of the opposing point of view. It's very easy for a lot of people to just remove the opposing point of view by pressing a button an misinformation is rife when you spend all day using social media.
