EURO 2020 Day 8 : The Jocks & The Geordie

So just 25 years and 3 days since Gazza scored THAT goal against Scotland at Euro96, Wembley is again the venue for another European Championship Finals England v Scotland game tonight. Such a shame it’s a reduced capacity otherwise the atmosphere would have been epic.
Scotland can’t afford to lose otherwise their tournament is as good as done whatever happens in their final game against Croatia, and an England win would ensure qualification for the knock out phases!
This one is another heartbreaking one for me as I originally had a ticket for the game which was sadly taken away when the Wembley capacity was reduced but like most of the rest of the nation it’ll be all eyes on ITV later for the big one!
In the meantime there’s the small matter of two other sideshows to get out of the way and my predictions are:
Sweden 2-1 Slovakia 2pm
Croatia 1-1 Czech Republic 5pm
England 3-1 Scotland 8pm
Oh and congrats to Belgium & the Netherlands who join Italy as definite qualifiers into the knockout phases after yesterday’s wins!

Hope you’re right. Thing is the England game is, dare I say, Scotland’s Cup Final isn’t it? The one they’re gonna be really up for and raise their game for.

I’d always say that it’s better to top the group and come what may, the old adage; to be the best, you’ve got to beat the best is still true.
You’re right about Scotland and there’s a lot to be said for team passion but on paper, I can’t see Scotland hurting us, unless it’s through error or having a bad day. England will be up for this too though… |

Ooh I hope it’s a positive memory not a negative one!
Incidentally since Wembley has been rebuilt the best 2 atmospheres I’ve witnessed were vs Poland (which was crazy) and Scotland .. always tense and nervy, scuffles breaking out all around. But the noise was immense whereas new Wembley’s atmosphere is usually quite muted. |

I'm going 3-1 to England.
But the scoreline will not reflect how close the game will be in reality.
I think it will have a prem game feel to it. End to end, scuffles and mini battles breaking out in the middle.
But I feel Scotland will most probably run on fumes in terms of energy and emotions by the end and England will grab a couple of goals after the 80th min.

Congrats to Sweden, 4pts in the bag and as good as through to the knockout stages with that hard earned 1-0 win via a penalty. The Slovaks threw everything bar the kitchen sink in those last couple of minutes to no avail!
Shag will be celebrating tonight!
Slovakia will have it all to do now and will need some sort of positive result against Spain to go through despite a good opening day win vs Poland.

A 1-1 draw earlier in the Croatia / Czech game really opens up the group and gives Scotland real hope!

Literally zero seconds of time added on at the end of the first half, 0-0.
First half of the first half was frenetic, some great chances but settled down a bit after that.
I tend to agree with Lee Dixon (words I thought I’d never hear myself say ), I think Grealish would be a great sub for England - give him 30-35 mins at least!
Thoughts on the first half? What would you do differently 2nd half? |

So .. 0-0 it is .. a good point for the Scots which keeps them in the running for the knockout phases with a must win game against Croatia now on Tuesday - a draw won’t be enough.
4pts now for England .. should be enough to see them through although a defeat on Tuesday v the Czechs might yet still see them out!
Not the best game to be fair, both sides had chances but very frustrating at times .. I don’t think anyone else watching will be worried about either team.
England v the Czechs now to win the group .. a draw will see us finish Second... |

To be fair and to put things in context, this was effectively a derby match, close neighbours, biggest rivalry, most players in the Premier League .. it was never going to be a free-flowing classic and was “the” game of the group.
Remember France v Germany t’other night was the other hyped game and that was shit too!
A point is good for both teams - it was a Group game at the end of the day and the game would no doubt have been very different if it was a straight knockout - a very different mindset in that situation. Now Scotland have a home game which they need to win now and England a home game that they need not to avoid defeat .. so a draw was always decent for both. |

To be fair the swedes did a job on the Spanish like the Scots did a job on the English! My worry about the Italians is yes they are on a 28 game unbeaten streak… if you have a look at the actual teams they have played… it’s not murderers row… they haven’t really played any top tier teams

10/10 for optimism, but I don't think anybody taking an objective view can see anything other than a match we should have won chucked away for lack of effort and two points wasted.

Haha england were crap ill admit now didnt get out of first gear but anyone seen the pics in scotland celebrating a 0-0 draw like they won the world cup ffs havent scored a goal yet bottom of the group really says it all if a draw is the best thing they can celebrate haha

0-0 in your cup final scotland played well but outfought I’m not so sure it was pretty even i thought no way were you dominant
two poor sides I thought like a premier league game both sides could have won if they took their chances but neither of us did it was mostly a midfield battle
a point each was fair my point is celebrating a 0-0 like you won the tournament is a bit ott and embrassibg imho

Scotland qualified playing as a team and excelled in that tonight, Croatia will be a very different proposition but at least you are at Hampden...pleased to see very little 'added time' needed, no histrionics! Felt that Gilmour and McGinn were the difference |
