I'm dog sitting my daughter's dog.

I knew he'd be home sick, he always is.

He's ignoring me..I mean realy ignoring me!

At least he's not now sat by the door.

The only time he momentarily cheered up was when I was feeding him chicken.

I was just trying to engage him when I realised I was talking to him the same the way I would a toddler...you know that voice...kinda light positive and high pitched.

He's probably thinking WTF!

Got me thinking, how do you talk to your pets..do you have a 'pet voice?

Normal voice. Especially when discussing deep philosophical treatises.

Talk to them like adults, play with them like children, has always worked for us.

When my daughter brought him home as a tiny puppy she said "mom meet your grandson it's all your getting"

She so spoilt that dog.

She went on to have a son but the I've always had a soft spot for the dog

The thing about dogs is they relate to the tone. They get excited to "baby talk" because to them it puts across friendly and exciting feelings.

A deeper tone is more authority and is related to commands.

Baby talk is important to interacting with dogs. However you want to keep your tone neutral and calm for the majority of interactions. They respond best to it.

When there blue I talk to them in a soft voice, same way I would if I was trying to comfort a baby and not try to engage too much. Tend to find they'll come sit with me then

Mine look at me like muuum what the hell?! -they don’t understand you (we have three) - but they do

… and they definitely recognise a change of tone - the merest drop when saying who’s done that has all three looking at me like

I sometimes wish they could answer back but I think they’d never shut up asking for treats and walks x

I talk to all dogs in the baby voice unless they are slightly psychotic. Then I just siddle past them avoiding eye contact.

There’s a psychotic dog next door to us … I’d neverrrr try the baby voice on her - I swear she crouches behind the fence waiting for people to go past so she can leap out and park like a maniac and make them jump out of their skin - she walks off all smug looking

- they definitely have face expressions … like the poster above said - they have that look

I have just watched it...that's pretty amazing.

Especially when he says his paw is hurting and just how he expressed it.

And...of when he says..love you, thank you !

He has an ability to mither the arse off me just as I've put my feet up
