Was behind someone in a shop today who payed with cash. It took ages. For the cashier to count it out to make sure it was right, then to ask the customer if they had the odd few pennies. Then for the customer to root round in purse /wallet.

When it was my turn, bleep, payed with the app on my phone.

The pandemic has actually highlighted that cash has become more of a pain

but the value of the item and the value of the payment remains the same no matter if cash or card so the bartering should be just as easy

the only time cash is worth more to someone is if they are not declaring it as earnings, or the non cash payment is a payment plan over a period of time, where the time value of money being less in future comes into play

realistically we will go mostly cash free, but any investigation into it has raised the issue of creating a “poverty barrier” for people who are not able to live without cash, and for this reason the bank of england will not withdraw cash from circulation any time soon

for example there are older generations that don’t have the technological capacity to go cash free

homeless people cant get access to a bank account without a permanent address and proof of their identity to meet regulation know your customer rules , with no bank account it is not possible to go cash free at the moment

that is just 2 examples

things might change over the next few decades, particularly with growth of crypto currencies, maybe soon anyone with a mobile phone will have access to currency that doesn’t need to be cash, but we are not there yet

i am wondering if you mean quantitive easing where more money was put into circulation to back existing debt (ie more money was being spent so more notes needed to exist to cover that spending) and to encourage people to take more

but again the notes are only printed because people want to loft them from a machine

the central bank can and already does, achieve the same thing by lending money to retail banks (electronically, no physical cash moves), who can then lend to customers (electronically - it would be very rare for a customer to come get a loan in bank notes), who then spends that money in shops using their card, the shops pay their bills and tax electronically … and so on… we are only printing notes because some people use them, not the other way around

In the world we live in card transactions seem the easiest and germ free way.

But I have started to set x amount a week to spend and in choosing to do that have reverted back to using cash all the time so I know I'm not over spending and being wasteful with money.

Also I'm trying to get better at saving, in the hope of being able to pay a lump sum of my mortgage each year.

I`m always loosing cards......and cash.

I need verbal money. I just go into a shop and say at the counter, "I`m giving you £3.50" or " Here`s £3.50" and the shop keeper says "Here`s your change" and I walk out with the goods. Alot easier.

I've pretty much stopped using cash since the pandemic started. I've always thought that cash was a bit unhygienic even pre pandemic and when I have come into contact with cash during the pandemic, because modern notes are made of plastic, I've actually washed them first before putting them in my wallet. Seriously folks if you leave a note to soak for a bit in hot soapy water the grime that comes from them into the water is not worth thinking about!

I also have a phone with NFC capability and recently took the plunge and installed Google Pay. Now I don't even have to take my card out with me anymore.

Do feel very sorry for homeless folks who's chances of getting street donations from people must have taken a massive hit during the pandemic, as nobody is carrying cash anymore.

It was late last night when I reply. And it’s seems that you made sense of what I wrote.

I guess you work in banking.

So you must know that banking need a counter balance. Central bank lend money in return they need to show they have that cash. It’s symbolise the health of the system, that keep inflation and the currency strength strong.

But of course there is the fact that people still using cash to buy product, but that’s only recycled money…

I am not an expert btw, it’s just the way I understand it.

its not so much the the central bank needs to have cash (or notes) to back up the money in existence , in the case of other banks that print notes its the direct opposite

so for every single note printed by clydesdale or rbs, that may come into circulation that day (so say its in a cash machine or at a post office but nobody from the public actually had it yet, that counts, but if its say in a g4s warehouse then it can be excluded), those banks must hold that value in an account with the bank of england as the counter balance

but again its electronic money backing up the notes snd not the other way around

we cant keep our currency strong just by printing notes to match the debt we allow people to have, its not the paper that has the value its what it can buy , we used to back all our currency with gold at the central bank but that hasn’t happened for a long time and gold is so expensive now how would they even store what was needed

nowadays the strength of our currency is all linked to politics (which is why it tanked after brexit) and the economy and the base rate set by boe , basically how much can our money buy us , and how stable to people from other countries see it and therefore how much do they want to buy our currency

Regular bills, mortgage, insurance, gas & electric, internet, council tax etc, are paid by direct debit each month from my second account.

For everything else I prefer to use cash; I take out £100 on Mondays from my primary account, and that has to last me until next Monday.

The only thing I pay for by card is the weekly shop at Costco where I'm buying on behalf of others.

That's a great tip. I have a bills account and one for spending. The spending account has text alerts set up so I know when it's getting low.

It's more difficult to keep track of contactless spending than it was having an empty purse.

okay so in an established business that already takes card , cash and card are of equal value

actually the cash and card transactions are also of equal value to you , you just have an additional merchant services expense now which by the way isn't going to your bank , its goes to the pdq provider, and mastercard / visa who provide the technology - its not a con, these companies provide a service , of course that has a cost but in the UK people think banking is free because the banks can’t get away with charging for anything and the perception that creates so they absorb most non business customers costs (in other countries it is common to pay monthly for your account or to use an atm of a different bank provider )

do some comparison of monthly fee vs per transaction fees and you might get a better deal

but as you seem to already be aware which is likely why you started accepting card , the convenience of card is more valuable to your customer , and even with the added expense 10 card transactions a day will be worth more to your business than 2 cash transactions because the other customers were not carrying cash so took their business to the shop along the road

advertising isn’t connected to your cards (yet)

its the browser cookies , or giving the shop your email address for the receipt that would get you on an advertising list rather than payment method

"I like to use cash.

CalHi cal could say it was an age thing I am cash person with card there is no room for manoeuvre with cash room to barter

but the value of the item and the value of the payment remains the same no matter if cash or card so the bartering should be just as easy

the only time cash is worth more to someone is if they are not declaring it as earnings, or the non cash payment is a payment plan over a period of time, where the time value of money being less in future comes into play

Your so wrong

I have a shop my bank charges used to be £58 per month I payed staff cash suppliers cash ect only banked rent and utilities ect

I now take cards my bank charges are over £400 per month

I’ve had someone come and re quote from a different firm the best they could save was £7.50 a month

I have loads of small transactions

It’s a giant world wide con Morning. My friend how do they set how much they are going to take or is it £400 a month set charge good morning by the way "

There’s a minimum world wide fee of 2p per transaction then a percentage of the sale this goes to the machine provideder then they transfer to a commercial bank who take a fee then they transfer to my bank who take a fee then I have to pay to make payments from my bank to everyone else so many people taking a cut

okay so in an established business that already takes card , cash and card are of equal value

actually the cash and card transactions are also of equal value to you , you just have an additional merchant services expense now which by the way isn't going to your bank , its goes to the pdq provider, and mastercard / visa who provide the technology - its not a con, these companies provide a service , of course that has a cost but in the UK people think banking is free because the banks can’t get away with charging for anything and the perception that creates so they absorb most non business customers costs (in other countries it is common to pay monthly for your account or to use an atm of a different bank provider )

do some comparison of monthly fee vs per transaction fees and you might get a better deal

but as you seem to already be aware which is likely why you started accepting card , the convenience of card is more valuable to your customer , and even with the added expense 10 card transactions a day will be worth more to your business than 2 cash transactions because the other customers were not carrying cash so took their business to the shop along the road "

Thanks for quoting the sales pitch

It still cost £400 + to do something that cost £58 before

oh and you aren’t doing the same as before are you? you now have a new option you offer your customers which as the number of people you will see on the thread never carry cash anymore should tell you, is value adding to your business

"Was behind someone in a shop today who payed with cash.

Is your time that previous to you? Can’t 2 minutes not being spared…? "

Actually, in this case I'm thinking more from the perspective of the staff and store management and from a customer service perspective.

If they are a busy store, which this one invariably is, then they will be wanting to move customers through their checkouts as efficiently as possible.

Nothing winds customers up more than being stuck in a long queue, especially if not all the checkouts are open.

"i pay cash and as a result get far less advertising directed at me because my spending habbits are unknown to advertisers.

advertising isn’t connected to your cards (yet)

its the browser cookies , or giving the shop your email address for the receipt that would get you on an advertising list rather than payment method "

Actually supermarket gathered all your shopping habits. First to anticipate stockings popular products but also to make some demographic statistics. The use of nectar card or other loyalty cards are a bonus for data companies collectors and analytics.

you just proved my point , the data is connected to the loyalty system which is signed up for voluntarily - not your debit or credit card
