According to reports, students at an Oxford university common room have voted to remove a portrait of the queen because of her links to Colonial Britain... She is head of the commonwealth and countries are not forced to stay and many have joined...

Sense or no sense ?

Doesn't matter.

It's their room, they can do what they want with it.

All old money has ties to colonial Britain. We people seem to forget is that it was companies who colonised the world not the British royal family

The East India Company started out in 1599 as "Governor and Company of Merchants of London trading into the East Indies", with a Royal Charter from QE1. Although the "front" was a private venture, it could not have been achieved without Royal support, funding etc. The same would be the case for other private companies that took control of various areas of the world.

The right wing attempts to stir up outrage and fight culture wars are getting even more pathetic.

People can have what pictures they want up. End of story. Absolutely embarrassing that government ministers are commenting on this.

As a foreign in this country, is quite sad to see so many English people filled with hate for their flag, history and culture in general. I just hope that you all realise how negative that is for our society in general.

We do understand that a country as old as England have a lot of negative chapters in his history. But at the same time has done so many good thing, and probably is one of the best countries in the world for minorities and foreigners to live in.

Be happy and be less negative!

Long live the Queen!

I think all the Royal estates and assets should be returned with the exception of Kensington Palaace (a residential building).

I think we are too far away from the French Revolution for a violent overthrow (but we should have followed the lead of the French in the 18th century).

We also need to rid the country of the aristocracy too. They are a blight on the country

Only our own muppet students who have no idea how great the UK actually is love spending their time being slowly radicalised by the lefty woke/ban everything brigade but don't have the intelligence to question it.

Revolutions don't really work. The top lot get toppled to be replaced by a new top lot and those at the bottom usually stay there.

The French didn't just have one revolution and once those forces are unleashed you don't know how it will play out.

The only real succesful revolution was the American one.

It's their common room, and their choice, and they're not obliged to have the portrait hanging there.

Reading it in the news this morning it sounds rather like they’re making a mountain out of a molehill.

Current students inherit communal area (within their private university residence) with photo of queen.

Current students take a mature approach to discuss as a group whether they want it up.

Consensus reached and photo removed!

This is basically the same as renting a flat where the previous occupant had a queen photo up and deciding it’s not for you and taking it down. Right?

It was a great country until Brexit, now we have seen an increase in right wing nationalism, odious flag shagging and prejudice. The UK we loved is fading. Sadly for us relocation is not an option. As for the monarchy they represent the mind set of living in the past. Thankfully our young folk have a better vision for the future.

Worse thing is the british boring small minded media are giving it so much air time thinking the majority are in support of it...

As per usual it's the noisy minority of minorities who just demonstrate and demonstrate and demonstrate and moan with no real substance to their argument and unable to listen to another persons view.

My teenage son has a life ahead of him constantly walking on eggshells afraid he'll upset someone by purely breathing..

Jeez...welcome to the sterile, humour free zone UK.

"As a foreign in this country, is quite sad to see so many English people filled with hate for their flag, history and culture in general. I just hope that you all realise how negative that is for our society in general.

We do understand that a country as old as England have a lot of negative chapters in his history. But at the same time has done so many good thing, and probably is one of the best countries in the world for minorities and foreigners to live in.

Be happy and be less negative!

Freedom of speech! Unless you mildly disrespect the Queen or the flag or Churchill, or suggest that Britain isn't absolutely brilliant and the Empire wasn't great

Maybe for you! My pay have gone up multiple times, and the process to be legal was super easy and free. In case of need I can still spend years outside of England and I don't lose my rights.

By the way my employer has voted for brexit and is a Conservative. He gave me a job during brexit and I only got support, respect and friendship from them. Most people didn't vote for brexit because they are xenophobic. It's a mix of multiple reasons.

Plus I can almost guarantee you if they do a "brexit" referendum in Portugal, Spain, Italy and a few others, they will vote to leave.

But I guess that for people that never migrated, or visit multiple countries in a way that you get to see the reality and not only the beautiful tourist sides you will think that Europe is a paradise at the moment. Far from the truth...

I don't have have a political affiliation but I can tell you that most of the xenophobia that I have encountered is coming from younger people that mostly lean to the left. That love to treat us like we can't defend ourselves, we will never succeed because of the "sistem", and sometimes only want to be out friends because we are a token. It's sad but is at least our reality...

Most people that have treated us with respect like we are normal citizens and help us to succeed were older people, plus we live in a area that the majority voted for brexit and we never been attacked. I play my country's music very loud, I have a flag and I speak my native language in the streets, never had a issue.... But if I told everything that happened to me while living in the super "progressive" London you will not believe the abuse that I received.

Yes I do agree that is still some work to do to be even better. That will always be the case. But you have no idea how England is a great country for most of us foreig, is a reason why millions of us made it our new home. With brexit the only difference it that you need to follow a set of rules but you are still welcome in the country by the same people that welcome the previous migrants. Plus believe me is not a easy decision to migrate, due to Covid we haven't seen or family or touch our soil for two years. That makes us cry because we do love our nation. That's why is so hard to see you hating your own country in such a horrible way. Because what I mostly see here, the news and pubs is not structured criticism is pure self hate.

Like I said be happy and less negative.

Anger? from whom - the student body who are being represented by the Committee, the University, the media, the country?

No anger, just disbelief in their reasoning for its removal.

It's ok to stand on a principle of democracy and the right to have your say - "but I would prefer if my comments are anonymised in order to protect me from people who don't agree with me"

This seems very much at odds with what many are advocating for social media - full transparency.

Im quite happy for my taxes to towards an unelected monarch live a life of luxury but I'm totally furious they are going towards young people receiving a decent education.

"It's only been there a few years.

They voted to put it there in the first place.

Democracy in action, what's the problem?

Agree.

Curious as to why the Minutes of the meeting have been anonymised though…

Having seen the anger being thrown about, seems wise.

Anger? from whom - the student body who are being represented by the Committee, the University, the media, the country?

No anger, just disbelief in their reasoning for its removal.

It's ok to stand on a principle of democracy and the right to have your say - "but I would prefer if my comments are anonymised in order to protect me from people who don't agree with me"

This seems very much at odds with what many are advocating for social media - full transparency.

Apparently "obcene and threatening" messages have been sent to the college. So that sort of anger I guess?

Apparently ...

Who said that, or have they also been anonymised.

Have now read her statements, and supporting free speech and political debate.

"Being a student is about more than studying. It’s about exploring and debating ideas. It’s sometimes about provoking the older generation." - and it really is so much easier to provoke when comments and opinions are delivered anonymously.

Social media is the cesspit that it is for exactly this reason.

"

Slightly false equivalence.

This was an internal meeting, where a group of people discussed what they were going to do in their personal space.

The meeting was not held on social media, nor was the meeting intended for public consumption.

That someone leaked it to a right wing news outlet, to create precisely this sort of furore is hardly the fault of the people present at the meeting.

I would assume the original minutes were not anonymous.

And my taxes are subsidising these "enlightened ones"

I thought we had tuition fees in this country?"

We do, but they don't cover the cost of all courses. Some types of course receive Government or NHS subsidy, mainly in Science, Engineering and healthcare/medical.

All old money has ties to colonial Britain. We people seem to forget is that it was companies who colonised the world not the British royal family"

Don't forget the Royal Navy, privateers and the Monarch's thirst for power, land and money.

I agree, I think that the Royals have been invisible during Brexit and Covid.

"

I completely agree with this. Being a foreigner and having lived and worked in the UK; England, Wales and Scotland I have nothing but good things to say about the Union in general. I've always been treated well and never received comments or sidelong glances for not having an Anglo-Saxon name. I worked in a number of areas that voted for Brexit and can also say xenophobia had very little to nothing to do with it.

A country where a growing percentage of its population only sees negative in its history has no future.

The annual sovereign grant is £84 million this year, has gone up every year ( £31million in 2009). About £1200 of the tax each person pays goes to the royal grant.

Over this period public service workers have had pay freezes and getting another pay freeze now, austerity , bedroom tax, classes cut at schools, and £200 million has just been allocated for a new total yacht.

What a depressing vision of Britain. The only thing we have going for us is a bunch of poshos in castles?

Our writers, musicians, sports teams, scientists, inventors, comedians, artists etc don't give Britain an identity and shared culture?

Ironic to see the word 'sycophant' mentioned, when apparently kissing the pampered collective arse of the Royal family is the only thing giving you an identity.

Ironic to see the word 'sycophant' mentioned, when apparently kissing the pampered collective arse of the Royal family is the only thing giving you an identity. "

I'm all for the monarchy and our heritage good or bad it's our history and it's our identity.

Take away the monarchy and we are just another faceless country with zero personality being taken over by a load of overly sensitive sycophants who pander to the shouty militants who are anti everything unless it's something they approve of.

What a depressing vision of Britain. The only thing we have going for us is a bunch of poshos in castles?

I don't wear Union Jack underpants or stand up and take off my cap when national anthem play's.

I have never been to Buckingham palace or been to see the trouping of the colour.

I just respect the queen and our heritage.

If that makes me a sycophant in your eyes crack on.

"With any luck, the monarchy will be abolished within the next 10 years.

There purpose is being questioned by many young people

Fully agree with you. We don't want a violent end to the monarchy. Just let Liz be the last one. Let the rest keep a couple of estates and hand whats left to the National Trust.

I think all the Royal estates and assets should be returned with the exception of Kensington Palaace (a residential building).

I think we are too far away from the French Revolution for a violent overthrow (but we should have followed the lead of the French in the 18th century).

We also need to rid the country of the aristocracy too. They are a blight on the country"

Why, have you any idea how much money the queen brings to the county, and i have traveled the world, everywhere ive been to them the uk means the queen, and also look at how many people the royals employ, so please srop reading the daily mail, and get some real facts, there are so many people who dont understand the royals value, and i think its a shame.

"The annual sovereign grant is £84 million this year, has gone up every year ( £31million in 2009). About £1200 of the tax each person pays goes to the royal grant.

Over this period public service workers have had pay freezes and getting another pay freeze now, austerity , bedroom tax, classes cut at schools, and £200 million has just been allocated for a new total yacht.

Try £2.83p.... 30.3M taxpayers, £85.9M grant (which comes from Crown Estate income). But I'd happily cover your share

Presumably you wont needing those public services?

I'd rather put Mine towards young peoples education than a family of parasites."

Personally I don’t think the queen brings that much value. I see a lot of land and buildings dogged by Royale legacy. Much rather see something progressive with our scientific minds being celebrated. Creating a mascot from centuries of an oppressive class system may generate abit money and publicity but doesn’t further the nation.

"According to reports, students at an Oxford university common room have voted to remove a portrait of the queen because of her links to Colonial Britain... She is head of the commonwealth and countries are not forced to stay and many have joined...

Sense or no sense ?

All old money has ties to colonial Britain. We people seem to forget is that it was companies who colonised the world not the British royal family

The East India Company started out in 1599 as "Governor and Company of Merchants of London trading into the East Indies", with a Royal Charter from QE1. Although the "front" was a private venture, it could not have been achieved without Royal support, funding etc. The same would be the case for other private companies that took control of various areas of the world."

Agreed! God save the Queen!

I take it you’re referring to the unofficial dinners they have. Sure there are deals carried out but I don’t think they’re giving value to the nation as a whole. It’s another way of playing the class system by playing Royalty top trumps.

Don’t see how I am grossly misinformed? There’s nothing the royals do that isn’t achievable through other means. Aside from the sense of nostalgia.

To put this in perspective it's a common room for students to relax so why can't they decorate and furnish it as they like. At least they voted on it and had a conversay about it instead of just ripping it down and throwing it in a skip.

Well that's my take on it anyway
