You don’t get it.

Black lives have not mattered in the US, UK or pretty much anywhere for a couple of hundred years or more.

This is not about what should be, it’s about what is. Half of the US population didn’t think a cop who kneeled on a black mans kneck until he was dead should face any consequences. Our priminister talked of watermelon smiles and women in letterboxes.

It’s really not that difficult, if you think that black lives already do matter in our society as much as any others then you really have not been paying attention.

Yes all lives matter but its black lives that are made to feel like it doesn't matter which is why it doesn't say only black lives matter. So I kindly ask of you to not treat it as like that's what the movement is about.

I am also aware that the purpose of the movement is actually not carried out right as it should be. Check the website when you can, you will see what those 3 women really do stand for xx

Indeed.

The very fact that you can't see what BLM (the intent and movement, not the side people took advantage of and hid behind) means and stands for just proves that you don't believe all lives matter. Just only that all lives when it suits you matter.

Dear OP. Whilst I understand what you are saying, it is indisputable that “all lives matter” there has been a degree of injustice in this world that was brought about by historic opinions of the value of a persons life, depending on the colour of their skin.

In the 21st century it is abhorrent to all right thinking people that a persons gender or skin colour has any bearing on the way that they are treated.

However, systems take longer to change than people, and so there has been a feeling that people who are defined as “black” still have a lower value. Hence “black lives matter (too)”, the movement highlights that value is not equal, and strives for that. They we are all valued equally.

Even before the BLM movement so many of us understand the message. Its shocking that George Floyd's murder could mean so little to some in this day and age. And that institutional, current and historical racsim is still being questioned.

The unfortunate thing about Racism. It won’t end, all we need to do is educate people. Always going to get narrow minded people (such as OP) with thoughts like that.

I’m just glad to be blessed with some many friends who are/will and continue to fight for this movement

Reading

The anology i really like is one of ap fire engine racing to put out a burning building. You wouldn't expect it to stop at a house that's not on fire to spray water on it. All of the houses matter but only one house is on fire.

Of course all lives matter but is black lives that are being snuffed out by the police due crimes like walking whilst black or driving whilst black. It is why Michelle Obama worries about her daughters when they get in a car. I as a white mother would only worry about them getting in an accident. Black mothers in the states also have to worry that their child could be shot dead by a racist policeman. That is why there is a movement to stress that black lives ALSO matter.

Valid & critical points made. The sad thing is, as much as we like to say it’s majority in the states & I think we’re slowly but surely seeing it more open everywhere else. Perhaps the rise in BLM, people finally realising they have voices and they should be heard. Regardless if OP was intentionally or unintentionally being racists, a reality check, educating themselves would be the move forward

I like that analogy, I read this a while back:

If your work colleague came in and said,im upset my grandad died, would you say all grandads die !

An then you have the police brutality situation. The majority of police officers, have very minimal training & background checks.

You look at the army for existence, months, years of drilled training. Physical test, psychological testing before they’re allowed to be out representing a country/nation.

The same principles in police forces, in US, UK & everywhere quite frankly should follow fit

To be fair out of context it can. Unfortunately generally people who say it tend to ignore the context, or are so incredibly ignorant that they can't see the context. Once again proving why it needs to be said.

99% of the time a valid point is used as an attempt to disguise racism, or stupidity, or both.

"It can be" herein lies the problem.....that was a decision you made, maybe ask yourself why you chose to see it that way ?

Well that’s a dumb comment.

You want to interpetate that way, if that's what was meant then that's what would be said.

Just be glad you don't have to feel like a threat to the police because of the colour of your skin

What is dumb, is that despite trying to act intelligent, you ignore the context behind the words and focus solely on the words themselves. You ignore the entirety of the situation in favour of focusing on things that suit your own argument.

Will it take a black female prime minister to settle the matter.

I don't think so. There'll always be racism.

I witnessed racism amongst ethnic races in farm foods last year, a black guy called an Asian woman the P word when argument broke out at the checkouts.

Movements and politics and the media seem to add fuel to the fire.

There are more Black and Asian broadcasters than ever before, before last year. There are more politicians of ethnic origin, there are more actors and actresses than ever before.

All the kids talk like they're from the Bronx ghettos.

Hip hop/rap music is the more dominant music genre.

I don't see oppression, at least not the real oppression that black people had to edure 200 years ago in America.

What I do see a backlash against the movement. It appears to be making a rod for it's own back.

So let's have a black female prime minister and see how things turn out.

I find it very interesting that people would be threatened either whole blacklivesmatter movement.

Why do people feel the need to say all lives matter?

I suspect its normally the same people who call others snowflakes when they are standing up for something.

Its done to dismiss and shut down the discussion.

Beyond the shadows.

"Everyone life matters im fed up of hearing about it

All it going to do is even more make folk racist

Folk will not put up with being told what to say do and think

Folk need to have respect for all dont mean you have to have all this Black Life matter shit

I want to see an end to it

I matter you matter dont bloody matter what colour you are we all matter

So folk give over you not being given a green card to do what every you like not matter what your colour is so folk give over"

Your argument is flawed and your anger is misplaced. Of course all life should matter, no ones is saying they don't. You should really try to comprehend what is being said before flying into a rage. But let's go with your statement, If all lives matter as you say, why is a black life so under valued time after time?

(is an emotive singer, so apologies if I get something wrong here)

The way I see it is this :

It's a statement of fact that black lines matter. Nothing against other lines.

Think of BLM as a powerfully worded 'reminder' that black lines matter, which for many years it has seemed that many didn't feel that way. It raises awareness to those who somehow didn't know that black people were often treated as if their lives didn't matter.

By following it up with 'all lives matter', people are diluting that message and hiding that reminder. This doesn't help the situation.

Yes, all lives do matter, but we don't need a reminder of that in the same way.

I'm saying All Lives Matter... I'm not using the word insects in the same context as "BLM" matter... You interpret my comment in the way your brain perceives it to be... But alot of people will see my comment is harmless... For me EVERY Single Life Matters in this our universe...be it Human, Animal or Plant

Maybe read the other comments to your post on this thread and realise actually most don't see it as harmless and the you do is why BLM is a very important message.

I don't understand what you mean... So are you saying by me saying All Lives Matter is harmful... I honestly see no harm in my sentence at all... That's my belief...every single life on this Planet matters to me

Why do you feel the need to say all lives matter??

You said what black lives matter could interpret which it's not so let's cut the assumptions out. Can you answer the question which is why you feel the need to say it

I've answered it... I respect all life... all... every single one. Hence all lives matter to me regardles of race, creed or religion . I couldn't help the way my brain had briefly interpreted also...or maybe I tuned into the news & media too much & it possibly unfluenced my brain a little.

So if I understand what your saying is that your mind has changed from what you first said.

Watching too much news is not a good thing they won't be 100% truthful xx

I did at one point perceive it that way many months ago...& Yes some news & media can be very harmful, fake and influential in the way we can perceive things. & Yes I am inclined to tune into too much `news` at times which as you say is not a good thing...thanks btw I totally 100% agree with you xxx"

You are welcome hun I'm pleased this thread has given you a better understanding of the movement. Hope it can for the OP tomorrow. Thank you for opening your mind and heart xxx

"ALL lives matter...even that of the tiniest minute insect

The statement Black Lives Matter actually can come across as racist

Well that’s a dumb comment.

What's so "dumb" about it... It can be interpreted as black lives matter more than white

And as for my comment about insects... Some insects have a very important role in having a positive effect on our planet & nature

How can it?

Where does it say only black lives matter.

"(is an emotive singer, so apologies if I get something wrong here)

The way I see it is this :

It's a statement of fact that black lines matter. Nothing against other lines.

Think of BLM as a powerfully worded 'reminder' that black lines matter, which for many years it has seemed that many didn't feel that way. It raises awareness to those who somehow didn't know that black people were often treated as if their lives didn't matter.

By following it up with 'all lives matter', people are diluting that message and hiding that reminder. This doesn't help the situation.

Yes, all lives do matter, but we don't need a reminder of that in the same way."

*an emotive subject

I also don't think we should jump on everyone who says 'all lives matter' and label them as racists.

Some obviously are, but I feel many just don't understand the statement and need a little help.

I have to admit when I first heard the term, I also thought 'but all lives matter don't they?'. This came from a place of love not hate as I honestly believe all lives matter and totally missed the point of the moment. It was only after I looked into the meaning and talked to my black mates that I realised what it was saying and why following it with 'all lives matter' was damaging.

until all lives matter the BLM movement will keep pointing out that black lives ALSO matter!

If you honestly believe that black and ethnic minority people are treated exactly the same by society, the police and the legal system, then you are either nieve or wilfully ignorant and need a serious wake up call.

Racism is inherent to us as a species. Unless we acknowledge that each of us is capable of holding implicit bias (if not explicit) and actively seeking it out and confronting it in ourselves and others, then we will continue to fail as a society and the need for BLM and similar movements will persist!

Yes, all lives matter. The BLM movement does not dispute this in any way. White lives matter and that's not in dispute with the people their message is aimed at. The point that BLM are making is that a lot of those people think that black lives DON'T matter. It is a specific message aimed at a specific problem. Saying "All lives matter" is not in any way going to address the problem, and I cannot see any way in which it will keep racism alive.

Are you going to criticise the RSPB for only wanting to protect birds? Surely all animals should be protected. Are you going to criticise the NSPCC for focusing on the protection of children? Surely everybody should be protected from cruelty. How dare these charities focus their efforts on specific issues? There really should only be one big world charity just called "Do good things". That would solve everything, wouldn't it?

Focusing on a problem does not make that problem worse. Not focusing on a problem get a problem addressed adequately.

The "All lives matter" response to BLM is illogical and ignorant.

People really think that race is the big problem. And there are problems with race.

But class is the issue. Do you think the elites of the world care about us? White or black?

Do you think a poor white kid will have an easier life than a black kid born into a millionaire family?

There are race issues, that’s true. There’s police brutality issues in the US. But the biggest issue we have is the wealth gap. Politicians are paid for and bought off. These elites follow no rules. They pull the strings in the background to benefit themselves only. They hire private police to protect their gated communities

Anybody that supports BLM cannot possibly have looked into what their aims really are. This is why so many of their chapter leaders are now resigning

There's a lady on YT who has been trying to find out where their millions of dollars are being used. Spoiler alert - it certainly hasn't gone to any black communities or victims of police brutality

A poor white kid might not have a better life than a billionaire black kid but one thing's for sure ,they would be treated differently just because of their skin colour. I'll give you a fine example about something that happened when out Shopping. I walked into a designer shop and the first thing that happened was the security guy started following me around the shop while I picked out what I wanted and at the same time a white guy who from his appearance and dress code didn't look like he had any business being in that shop was greeted at the door with a smile. Like Chris Rock once said he asked a poor white guy if he'd trade places with him for a day and be black with all the money that he has ,the White guy replied no chance in hell,I'll ride this white thing out.

Maybe, but I think these things are all related. Follow the money in the BLM movement and you’ll find massive donations from billionaires.

I think the rich love this stuff. Keep the poor divided and arguing so they’re too busy to point a finger at the billionaires that run this planet.

They love the idea of defund they police because they’ll just hire private military to protein their gated communities. And when the streets turn to shit they’ll have a reason to move towards a dictatorship where your freedoms are taken away in the name of safety.

The BLM is huge. The world knows of it. Yet no one seems to care that a select few elites are running this show. They’re manipulating politics to benefit them. They’re setting things up in the background to move towards total global domination. And they’re doing a great job of keeping us divided because they know if we banded together we could do something

That may be so, however this thread is about racism as a societal issue. If you want to discuss global elites what is the problem with starting your own thread on them? You could even open it with "off the back of the racism thread". I take your point about divide and conquer, which is why it is important to have the conversation on racism that we're having, without it being derailed, or dismissed as not as important as something else, surely? It will take us all coming together to ensure any kind of equity, for any of us.

Yes, all lives matter. But some people believe that black lives DON'T matter. The BLM message is aimed at that attitude. What is wrong with addressing a particular issue?

Adding a colour in front of lives mattering is not racist. The BLM message does not say that white lives don't matter. If it did, then I would agree with you that it's racist, but it doesn't. It's a reminder that there are issues about black lives in particular that need to be addressed.

I’ve definitely seen more open racism against whites since the BLM started.

I don’t think it’s an issue that the real BLM wanted but it’s definitely something that’s happening. Things that if the roles were reversed what be considered racists, but seems perfectly fine when aimed at white people

The biggest threat to black men comes from other black men, that's just a cold hard fact. Another major issue that nobody wants to discuss is the high percentage of absent fathers in the black community

BLM and the American Democrat party seem to think that removing fathers from black homes is a good idea. It just baffles me how anybody can support that

No it came about because the black community in the USA felt that their lives didn't matter. When they see police violence all around them, when they get followed by the security guards in every shop they go into, etc etc. Open your heart and your eyes and become an ally and let's end the hate. We will be a better planet for it.

Regardless of who matters, I think you’re right that the BLM protests/movement has actually created more racism in many cases. People who were not at all racist are suddenly given reason to have negative feeling when they see riots and vandalism during the protests... it’s not a positive image even though it’s supposed to be.

"The biggest threat to black men comes from other black men, that's just a cold hard fact. Another major issue that nobody wants to discuss is the high percentage of absent fathers in the black community

BLM and the American Democrat party seem to think that removing fathers from black homes is a good idea. It just baffles me how anybody can support that

We could argue that these situations have been created due to poor treatment of minority communities in the past though

We could of course argue that and that's what I think we should be arguing. Poor communities whether white or black become the victims of themselves "

But it was white people that make those communities poor. Shouldn’t we help fix that issue?

I don’t think it’s an issue that the real BLM wanted but it’s definitely something that’s happening. Things that if the roles were reversed what be considered racists, but seems perfectly fine when aimed at white people

What have you seen ?

For one day? For one to one interviews only? To highlight the fact that the press corps are in fact racially biased towards white journalists?

And what was the response of the white media? To mock her natural black hair and call her names. Why should she be made to talk to people who can be so nasty about her because of her race?

"People really think that race is the big problem.

A white guy who looked like he didn't have any business being in that shop? So you made a judgement based solely on his appearance? Oh the irony "

See how it feels

As a black person, my view is this. We as black people need to believe our lives matter. The biggest killer of black people is other black people. The biggest racist/ colourist I know are black people.

Over the last year, listening to the likes of Kevin Samuels and Tommy Sotomayor, two black YouTube influencers who do nothing but denigrate black women in particular, with the almost full support of black men my opinion now if I read about a black man being hurt/manhandled/killed by a white person is #ohwellitiswhatitis.

You said this on another thread about race and I asked this same question. What examples of open racism against white people have you seen?

(I didn't get an answer then so I'm not hopeful now) "

- Coca cola asking their employees to be less white.

- The white disabled kid that was torture for a full night during the BLM protests for being white.

- All the images of BLM protesters forcing white people to say their slogans or force them to kneel.

- A white comediant that wasn't allowed to perform on a comedy show because he had dreads.

- The YouTube video from the channel Jubille that's is called "What are white people superior at?" That contains a ton of racism against white people.

- All the pages on twitter about enslaving whites or the extermination of white people.

For the ones that don't believe it. Just do a quick research.

Do I believe that white people at the moment suffer from discrimination in a daily basis?! No. But if we allow it to continue it will get worse.

By the way I don't agree one bit with the op message. Plus I do respect and support the message of the BLM movement but not the organisation.

Peace and love

Probably. But we should acknowledge that the reason many minorities face hardships today was because of hardcore racism in the past that denied them rights we as white people take for granted and have us a financial foothold

Is this about the football by any chance. Here’s what my black mate said when we heard the booing, and I’ve seen similar on Twitter.

“If you are the one not applauding when the players take the knee, it doesn’t make you a racist, however if you are the one booing, then you are the racist”

Think that says it all

"until all lives matter the BLM movement will keep pointing out that black lives ALSO matter!

If you honestly believe that black and ethnic minority people are treated exactly the same by society, the police and the legal system, then you are either nieve or wilfully ignorant and need a serious wake up call.

Racism is inherent to us as a species. Unless we acknowledge that each of us is capable of holding implicit bias (if not explicit) and actively seeking it out and confronting it in ourselves and others, then we will continue to fail as a society and the need for BLM and similar movements will persist!"

My point is this: get off our knees and fix what's wrong within our communities ourselves and not expect/blame white people for everything.

White people aren't to blame for absent fathers. White people aren't to blame for knife crimes and gangs. White people aren't to blame for misogyny and homophobia in black communities. White people aren't to blame for our own self hatred.

We need to recognise and fix our own problems not deflect and ignore. Until we stop fighting each other why expect other races to do what we're unable to?

So you’re saying that because of individual incidents that are directly related to ongoing racism, that undermines the BLM movement?

I’ve seen a lot written on SM this past year about racism and the emphasis (from white people) seems to be that if there’s a slight question about the actions of protesters, that invalidates the argument as a whole, yet the racist attitudes of others goes unchecked.

It’s the issue of racial bias that is really at fault here and it’s symptomatic of why there’s an issue; white privilege dictates that people conform to their ideal of what ‘good behaviour’ looks like, how to protest, who should be sympathised with, who is deserving of equality…essentially it’s this attitude of having to qualify to be treated with respect and as a human being, which is completely backwards.

People sit in glass houses throwing stones about others actions towards each other but never, ever look at themselves and their actions towards others or place themselves in those situations.

If you read my post you’ll see I said exactly the opposite. I don’t think the real BLM has anything to do with it. I think it’s just been used as an excuse by some to let a little white racism fly. And the fact that it happens and no one cares is proof to me it’s accepted currently.

So if the majority of the reporters were black? If white people were oppressed as black people have been and continue to be?

Or just a white mayor only speaking to white people?

Reversing the races out of the context of the situation proves nothing.

The mayor (I believe the first woman, black, gay mayor) chose 1 day to promote black reporter who were/are vastly under represented in the press corps. It was to celebrate her 2nd year in office.

I'm not surprised it was fox news that tried to sue her. Not one bit.

This just shows a lack of understanding of history.

Minorities were denied rights to own property.

Even when those rights were granted, they were denied loans based on their ethnicity.

This has created a wealth gap. Minorities are more likely to never own property because they didn’t get this inter-generational wealth white people got with cheap loans on property.

This all creates poverty, which leads to all the problems you see. Violence, drugs, lack of education, crime. It all plays a role.

We brought people over and made them slves, then set them free and act like they’ve had the same advantages we had.

Thanks for the hand grenade OP.

I’m sure that you’re now the proud new member of many people’s block lists, much as many others are!

Racist attitudes are vile and abhorrent but let’s not ignore that sometimes words are not in concorde with intent, and sometimes articulation and semantics can trip up even the most astute people.

Let’s seek to understand before being understood. Arguing and attacking people only entrenches opinions and closes argument.

It’s through discussion and understanding that issues are resolved

There seems to be a misapprehension amongst many people that white people can experience racism (based on the colour of their skin). They cannot. They CAN experience racial prejudice, however that is not what we're talking about here. Racism is about non-white people being oppressed by institutional, societal structures.

https://metro.co.uk/2020/03/09/can-white-people-experience-racism-12340542/

"White people would only experience racism if the existing power structures enabled prejudice against them to cause this kind of widespread negative impact – as it does for people of colour. But that’s not how society currently works."
