Apparently this is on the rise and the RSPCA are concerned. Some blame the rise of celebrities on social media with their dogs..

I quite like the long floppy ears myself but why would you .. ?

Because people are arseholes quite frankly. We have used dogs as accessories for far too long and the desire for perfection is the reason why so many dogs have health problems today.

How anyone could harm an animal that is nothing but heart is beyond me. We need to do better

Where did you read this Tom?

Somewhere in Co. Down

People will claim it's for the dogs benefit because some have ear issues but sorry I call bull on that.We had dobermans growing up and I had a few as an adult as well and not one of them ever had an issue with their ears not being cropped. It is done for cosmetic reasons and to me that is wrong.

They actually show a doberman with splints on it ears to make them stand up rather than flopping down.

I'm going with this, and will add that I think anyone guilty of this should have the same done to them so that they understand the pain and suffering that they have caused that poor animal.

Anyone who crops their dogs ear and tail for aesthetic reasons only should have bits of themselves shopped off as well.

There are some medical reasons to have it done but not many.

Is dog tail cropping legal. I thought it was for two reasons. One for aesthetics but was it to keep that area clean also?

Anything done for a non clinical reason is wrong

If it's a medical requirement then it's fine. If they get infections etc but in the majority of cases it's due to archaic 'breed standards' bought in by the kennel club.

Breed standards often breed in deformities. The rhodesian ridge back's feature is a form of spina bifida and can sometimes have a hole from their skin down into their spinal fliud.

I grew up on a farm, cropping the tails of working terriers was to thicken up the tail and make a sort of handle you could pull them out of a rabbit warren if they got stuck. I would never do it myself, and all our terriers were docked by a vet. But I know farmers who do it themselves straight out of the womb

And should celebs stop posing on social media with these cropped ears dogs. The RSPCA worry that this makes it fashionable

Ears are another form of communication for dogs and I don't mean them using them to hear. The movements of them can be read by others and they can gauge how a dog is feeling, their intentions etc.

Cruel on so many fucking levels and I'll happily have a "chat" with any cunt who thinks it's okay to mutilate. By chat... I mean kick fuck out of, traumatise and mutilate...ya know.... fairs fair.

Cropping done within the UK is illegal for both ears and tail, unless done specifically by a vet and for valid reasons.

It is not illegal to import and/own a dog with cropped ears or tail.

Originally cropping was done for role based reasons, so ears would not get caught or wounded etc

In years gone by they cropped human ears to improve eyesight. After having your ears cropped there was no need to wear spectacles .

local, but not too local

I don’t agree with cropping anything.

One of my dogs was a rescue and had her tail cropped before I got her. ::angry face::

Just disgusting and so cruel...they cut pit bulls ears for when they fight...that's also so cruel. Humans have a lot to answer for on the pain that animals suffer just because some humans think they should look a particular way and not the way nature intended...Shocking

Agreed - but I also feel very strongly about dogs bred with such short snouts that they can barely breathe. Imo all such breeds should be outlawed. X

Yeah I thought that, wasn't the RSPCA trying to get a ban on imported ones also

Dogs with long ears it is to help pick the scent up of the ground when searching for prey the ears help them smell when tracking

It's a disgusting, cruel practice. Totally unnecessary. Originally done to fighting dogs to avoid the other dog ripping the flaps, absolutely no place in modern culture.

Barbaric practice for people with serious issues in my experience.

I don't like it....same with docking tails....(different for a working dog, but the vast majority are pets....no need whatsoever)
