Today, I've read that United Airlines has placed a conditional order for the next generation supersonic plane from a company called Boom (love the name).

If money was no object, would you go on the maiden flight? Do you think it's cool that they're making a comeback, or just meh?

It’s a nice option to have if you need to be in New York within 3 hours

Abercynon-ish

I would be OK with it as long as the runway didn't have any debris on it on takeoff.

And if it was less noisy for people inside and outside the plane.

It will put an end to the flat earthers bullshit as when Concorde got to 59,000ft you could see the curvature of the earth. Many gave not experienced this

Amsterdam

I wouldn't go on it just to go on it, but it would be nice to have briefer flights!

Depends on the cost and economics of running it. One airline buying it will not make it financially viable. United are using it as an opportunity to advertise. Virgin did the same at the invent of the A380 claiming they would install gyms and on board shops but the reality was they never serious about ordering any. A380 is mass transport and fully laden with passengers can't hold much cargo (where airlines make their money).

Appreciate there's alot if advancement in technology, fuel saving, environmental issues but all that money in designing it needs to be clawed back and if operating costs are high like the original concorde, the project won't get very far. Concorde was ahead of its time but neither BA or Air France actually operated them at a profit. Both companies were fortunate enough to be given them and didn't need to purchase them like United or any other airline will have too.

Will be interesting to see how this unfolds. Will it again only be for the privileged few and not the masses?

I don't see it happening myself.

The reason why Concorde was retired was because people no longer needed to travel quickly between New York and London for business meetings that could be done over a video link.

Supersonic flight isn't particularly efficient on fuel. As a civilisation, we are trying to refuce our emmissions and reliance on fossil fuels.

The Sonic boom these things create was the reason why so few routes were available to Concorde as no countries will allow supersonic flight in their airspace

Actually that's not quite true. Concorde was retired after the Air France disaster. For both airlines it was very prestigious and a flag ship. BA only retired their Concorde's because they could not afford to pay for all the upkeep and maintenance alone. Parts n spares were used from a grounded aircraft because nothing else was being made. They probably would've kept going for a little bit longer but once Air France pulled the plug on it BA had no choice but to follow.

Demand for travel to JFK was still extremely high so BA reconfigured a few 747's to have a higher business class load than normal taking it from 70 to over 90 on this route. However this didn't last very long as they ended up putting extra flights on this route because of the increase in traffic.
