Pride month
Jump to: Newest in thread
This will be the first year I haven't been in a union attending all the Prides in the region. Well technically last year was, but 2020 didn't count.
I will be attending Essex pride at Chelmsford, sporting my flag and loosing badly at Tranny Bingo (an official game played in a tent with Drag Kings and Queens), dancing along to Nadine Cole from Girls Aloud.

"I will spend the month educating people on representation, the origin of pride and what its important
The stonewall riots, a very important event in many ways"
Stonewall is important and I kind of hate that it's something not taught so many people and companies use pride as a marketing and event forgetting its a civil rights movement |

Well, it started as that, definitely.
It is very corporate now and I dislike the way that companies trade on the rainbow but that’s how it’s developed now. I see it as a celebration, rather than a march, even though acceptance and representation still has a long way to go yet |

So far I’m marking it by putting my Bi Pride photo as my Facebook profile photo, which will no doubt go over most people’s heads yet again.
(I came out on FB in 2019 by posting photos of myself actually in the Pride parade, dressed in bi flag colours, and carrying my local bi group’s banner. Someone who heart reacted it later said “if I didn’t know better, I’d think she way lesbian or at least bisexual”. Obviously I was too subtle.)
I don’t know if I’ll be doing anything else yet. |

That made me chuckle. I’m not a huge fan of the bi flag but I’m still happy to rep the colours for representation, everyone in my life knows that I’m Bi, so I wear it with pride |

If you look at the stonewall riots and the first pride march, that’s a good place to start
There are loads of articles on google which go into far more detail than I could |

That’s just evidence that there’s still a long way to go.
The governments dithering over banning conversion therapy is awful as well |

Don’t know how I turned “was” into “way” there! Yeah, it’s not really my colours, but I turned it into an outfit with a blue petticoat, a purple corset, and a pink top and some small children asked me if I was a mermaid, so that was cool |

The only division that it causes is with people who are bigoted, anyone who believes that LGBTQ+ gender or sexual orientation should be celebrated and not be a bar to basic human rights is welcome |

There's an amazing new film on Netflix, covering the life of 1 of the greatest UK people, Peter Tatchell and his campaigning, from the early Prides onwards. He wouldn't accept it I'm sure but he ought to be Sir Peter Tatchell. |

I'll spend the month sending out corporate soundbites and give out rainbow lanyards with our corporate logo on that
I might set up a tent at one or two events and roll out the token gays with free pens and ready smiles
We might even talk about introducing LGBT steering groups, ideally to look like we're doing the right thing whilst pushing a corporate agenda that has scant regard for few, let alone the homos
Anything really that puts off the sniffer dogs and makes those outside believe we are an inclusive bunch, whilst sneakily using it as a bandwagon to push our product
I mean we might pay crap wages and roll roughshod over pretty much every decent employee right there ever was, but hey, we got rainbows folks
Speaking of rainbows, which ones do we show this month?
Do we put sticking plasters over the letters NHS and hope no one notices, or do we have two?
Do we support heros or homos or both?
Course we do, cos we're such a great company

That’s a pretty accurate account of every company associated. It’s sad.
As for the NHS rainbow, it’s different by one colour, although most people don’t know and many households were displaying pride colours last year, which amused me greatly, especially if they’re homophobic |

Why on earth is anyone homophobic?
Do you have issue with all creatures who naturally have same sex attraction?
Lions, dogs, monkeys, dolphins, penguins, giraffes, elephants......
It’s natural. It’s common across lots of species and most of all; it has no effect on anyone else. (Giraffes have way more gay sex than straight sex)

I think my friend summed it up on FB earlier today...
"Remember, pride month means lots of companies putting rainbow flags on stuff. If they aren’t contributing to our community, think about not buying it. It’s called marketing, it’s not inclusion. It’s making profit from a minority group."

By not needing it do we run the risk of forgetting though?
I do get the hope that one day who someone loves will not be an issue and I hope for that as well but I don't want to forget the build up to that.
I don't know. Maybe I'm not explaining myself very well. |

I think I understand.
I just wish that being a minority wasn't the burden it was. More than a burden - it's a thing that damages, even destroys lives. We fight against that. I want to ease suffering.
Surely if we can forget, then the suffering is behind us? We've won? |

Why keeping out of the way?I don't believe in things like it think they course more divisions so I'll keep out of the way for you to enjoy with out homophobic me.
Shrugs.
I once said to a bigoted fella "but it leaves more women for you?" and I could hear the cogs in his head creaking..."

"To all in the LGBTQ+ communities,
I’m always hoping for a time when we won’t need a Pride month. Sadly, I don’t think it’ll be in my lifetime
Pride month is about more than coming out. Its recognising thd riots, the brutality, the fighting and the struggle drag queen and queer folk went through (and still do) in order to be accepted.
No one ever moans about Americans celebrating independence day (I know you weren't moaning... It just popped in to my head as I was typing )
I wasn’t moaning, or coming out!
I’ve listened to the horror stories, and in fairness, some real success stories from friends and patients over the years who are LGBTQ+.
I just wish we lived in a fair, tolerant and loving society.
I hope we come not to need it.
We keep working until then.
By not needing it do we run the risk of forgetting though?
I do get the hope that one day who someone loves will not be an issue and I hope for that as well but I don't want to forget the build up to that.
I don't know. Maybe I'm not explaining myself very well. "
You mean like a statue or memorial?
I’d like to think we wouldn’t even need that, but I see your point. Perhaps schools could teach it in history? |

I think I understand.
I just wish that being a minority wasn't the burden it was. More than a burden - it's a thing that damages, even destroys lives. We fight against that. I want to ease suffering.
Surely if we can forget, then the suffering is behind us? We've won?"

June always has and always will be MY birthday month. Nothing else!
I'm all for people being who they want to be but taking an entire month to celebrate it? C'mon now, settle down! It's bad enough that xmas seems to start around mid November these days! |

There are ten other months…?
What other causes would you like to fit into the calendar?
It’s usually Pride month, based solely on because this is the month when various places hold their pride parades. Not always but usually, so the LGBTQ community tend to celebrate ourselves and raise awareness for community issues during that time.
We need a whole month because we can’t fit that much fabulous into a single day |

I get it tea. So many events in so many locations so it lets people go to more than one. I see the logic. Not for me but enjoy it everyone. |

Unfortunately due to the attitude of some gay men I generally stay away from Pride events.
Attended in the past when they weren’t money making enterprises, but now avoid and stick to Trans events only.
Too many times told by aggressive ultra macho types the ‘T’ in LGBT is at the end for a reason.
So I hope it goes well and understand the majority of the community are inclusive of the TV/TS part of Pride, but it’s not for me anymore.
Sorry if this thread is a celebration of Pride and I’m bringing it down with my comment, but there’s another side to these celebrations that aren’t that inclusive or brings out the best in everyone. |

Meh fuck that. I'd rally round a ton of T people to go just to piss the macho twats off! X |

"If T isn't part of pride then count me out"
I've said it before and been lambasted for it, but I'll say it again, homophobia is rife amongst (some) homosexuals |

Yes, it seems some only want acceptance for themselves. Hell no |

Absolutely right, I’ve had d*unken gay guys having a right go at me, in the Village. But the straight crowd especially women are the most accepting that you come across.

"It’s still Pride month folks!
Obviously the continuation of measures will impact some events, how are you celebrating? "
I don't celebrate, but I am aware
That is more a reflection of my asocial character than anything else
I have taken part in a couple of short films chronicling life as a bigger / hairier gay male - there's a stereotype that needs to be broken down that all gay blokes are young, good looking, fit & carefree. That needs challenging - sometimes from within
I also feel it is important that people attend smaller Pride events rather than 'landmark' Prides like London, Brighton & Manchester
Provincial prides are about awareness and education (with some fun events thrown in) as opposed to being full on carnivals
I would argue that they are where the real work can be done |

That’s a really good sentiment, I tend to agree as it’s easy for large cities to be cosmopolitan but the LGBTQ community is everywhere and it’s important that smaller communities are seen and validated |
