How old were you 30 years ago. Are you the same person or a different person now ? Should you be held accountable for things that you did at that age ?

e.g. If you punched a mate at work in an argument , should he be able to prosecute you now ? Are YOU the YOU that did it 30 years ago ?

Difficult question. I'm not the thirty year old me, would that my body were .

I knew not to punch people when I was 30 though. There were some things I didn't know not to do but I know not to now.

I suppose it depends on the seriousness of the action

No you are not cos that is a very good point Kitty .....

So people who were children 30 years ago can't be held accountable .....

What about those that are 40 and up or 50 and up ...... ?

I was 14.

If I were held responsible for the things that I did then, now, I’d be in trouble.

People learn and grow as we get older, this belief that historical words should be held against us now is contradictory to anyone being able to learn from mistakes.

There’s a reason why there’s a statute of limitations on some crimes

My thought is that if they were illegal or punishable then yes.

Clearly there’s a lot of context and nuance, but if the victim(s) still live with the consequences then so should the perpetrator

The past is a foreign country they do things differently there.

For me this is an unanswerable question. I am not the same person in a lot of ways but I am at my core.

When I was three I had a bracelet with a poodle on it, my friend had one too but a different colour. I lost mine so I stole hers and threw it in a bush. Should my 64 year old self pay penance?

I was getting married a couple of weeks ago 30 years ago.

So though I feel very much the same person. I know that I am not really. 20 odd years of marriage (we separated 6 years ago), 2 children, leaving the Army and getting a proper job, fostering, grandchildren...

All of that (and the rest), must have changed me. Surely I'm wiser and more sensible now?

Possibly not...

Absolutely not!

I’ve changed a huge amount since then.

Thankfully I didn’t do anything to hurt anyone though. If I had, then there might be an addendum as to whether I’m responsible or not

I became an adult when I was 12 due to circumstances and responsibilities. I then took on further responsibility when I was 22. 30 years ago I was 26 and got there without ever experiencing my teenage years.

I didn't do anything back then that I need to be held accountable for. I'm proud of that fact but at the same time I'm glad the "now me" is not the same as the "then me".

The "now me" is more confident and actually has self esteem.

No, I was very confused about my masculinity and needed to do some stupid stuff to give me reassurance that I was still a Man. I was either trying to be ultra macho or experimenting with my feminine persona.

Now I know who I am, my strengths and weaknesses so no longer need validation from anyone, including myself.

Hmmm, interesting. Possibly not fair as you didn't know the 23 year old me, but I would understand why you'd come to that decision and ultimately I'd have to accept it. I would hope that knowing the current me, you'd be able to see past the past.

I should add I was just a wee wanker, not a hardened criminal or anything!

This is interesting as 30 years ago i was 26 and married with a baby. The quietest period of my life. If you had said 40 or 20 years or even 10 then ive changed completly especially from 10 years ago. Ive done some crazy things when i was younger. Im no longer that person. If someone wants to judge me on my past actions then that is entirely up to them. I dont judge people on the past and love to here a good story of how people have changed their lives around

As time goes by I tend to give less of a shit about the things I can't change and more about the things I can. Our past is what made us who we are today, good and bad experiences.

That was waaaay too deep for me!

I was 17, so old enough to know right from wrong.

I am a very different person now, but I still hold most of the same values I did then.

In terms of whether I should be held responsible for my 17 year old actions, yes I should. Thankfully there was no social media back in the day or I'm sure I'd have posted some cringeworthy stuff that doesn't reflect who I am now, but I would take responsibility for posting it, know that I was in the wrong and that knowing better now means I can now do better now.

If it was a criminal offence then I absolutely ought to be held responsible for my actions. Although at 17 I was technically a minor I was certainly old enough to have been tried as an adult for the most serious of crimes.

Was 20yo back then.

The beginning of my life away from home and the start of my very first and only love relationship.

Immature and volatile back then but much mellowed down now.

I always take full responsibility of all my actions ever since I can remember (at least from age 7yo). That persist until now.

I was 5 and responsible for egging the dog on in his mischief, I think. I had to take responsibility then (my then-3yo bro got away with everything) so little has changed in that time! I'm still the responsible one. I've not done anything terrible in my life so PC Plod is not going to come beating my door down.
