Some companies offer financial incentives to car share, if so then also getting petrol money would be unfair on the passenger, but if they don’t and they’re just effectively giving a free ride every day then that’s poor form on the passengers part isn’t it?

I could never car share as I like my own space and peace and quiet on my commute, sod saving the planet!

Couldn't think of anything worse that being trapped in a small space having to 'talk' before work

I take a colleague to work when on the same shift. She does not drive so it saves her time and money. I do this because I want to help her and expect nothing in return.

I’m the same in liking my own space, which is why I always lived within walking distance to work. There’s also the aspect that I can’t stand commuting but that’s because I spent long hours at my job.

The passenger didn’t offer petrol money but did he give nice gifts occasionally? That would be the polite then perhaps.

If I were the driver and I offered the ride, I don’t think I’d take petrol money or anything but a gift would be a very nice gesture from passenger, although it shouldn’t be an expectation.

As it’s on his way, a work colleague used to pick me up and drop me off back home. He has an electric car so he said it’s pennies to do an extra mile or so.

Now that I drive I will now start to share the commute and pick him up and drop him off, every other week.

“I never meet”

You should check your car insurance before accepting payment - it can be deemed as a contractual exchange and invalidate your insurance

I wouldn’t give anyone a lift on a regular basis as I like my own time in the car to listen to what I want and be free from conversation

Also if someone expects a lift on a regular basis that can remove the drivers free will to stop off somewhere going to/from work if the mood takes

But in answer to your question, if I'm going there anyway I don't need any money, maybe just be interesting and share a few giggles or stories
