Germany's first genocide apology

Germany has apologised for the planned genocides that were carried out in German South West Africa, now known as Namibia, against the Nama and Herero peoples in the earliest years of the 20th century.

Tens of thousands were exterminated or driven into the Kalahari desert to die of thirst and starvation.

Historically, the Namibian genocide was the model that Adolf Hitler used to devise the 1933-45 genocide against Dozens of different groups within Germany and conquered territories.

There appears to be no depth of depravity to which humans will sink.

What the Belgians did in Africa was horrific too. Britain didn't do a whole lot better. Put humans in positions of power over other humans and you have a recipe for depravity.

Have Europeans apologised for their genocide of the indigenous people of north and South America yet?

"Have Europeans apologised for their genocide of the indigenous people of north and South America yet? "

I was a small part of the campaign for an apology in the Australian genocide, which happened by the Australian government in 2008. Not a direct answer, of course.

I guess that statue of limitations still applies as long as it was long enough ago and you managed to kill enough of the people and profit from their land.

There have been legal changes, mostly in the 1990s, in Australia, around some of it, but it hasn't seemed to amount to much.

Hitler modelled the Holocaust on the Armenian massacres during WW1. As he said who remembers them? Turkey still denies it was genocide which it clearly was.

That was the way of the world until the mid 20th century sadly. Brutal empire building wasnt limited to European countries either. The Japanese empire was notoriously nasty.

Equally as many as 2 million German civilians died 1945 to 1947. Driven before the advancing Red Army and vengeful east Europeans, many were deported to the USSR. The torture meted out to German speakers in post war Czechoslovakia were horrible beyond belief.

Few care to remember these events and consider only Germans capable of such crimes.

It's no excuse but considering what the nazis had done, I doubt forgiveness was on their minds.

War is horrific which means all those politicians who use that type of rhetoric are beyond contempt (naming no names)

Most colonial powers did absolutely horrific things.

There is a film about it which is really hard to watch.

History is written by the victors. There are countless atrocities, surely if we are concerned, lets start with current ones.

For those who have the stomach, watch this.

Just a handful of people thrown to the winds of human depravity. If you get to the end, pray for those two little souls among others.

Throughout history, empires, domination, whatever term we use for it, has come and gone. It isn’t only humans who do this. Creatures as small as ants do it, enslaving another colony and even an entirely different species such as termites. They do it for ‘survival’. We do it for monetary gain, which is our form of ‘survival.’

It doesn’t make what happened in the past any less tragic and unpalatable. However, we can apologise, if that goes some way to redressing the injury done but forgiveness must also follow it in order for lessons learnt to be absorbed and practised in a future where the ‘mistakes’ cannot be allowed to happen again.

Forgiveness can happen when wrongs have been righted. They clearly have not.

While we cannot unring those bells, we can work on the injustices which stem from them.

It never ceases to amaze me that nation states criminalise and penalise individual acts of violence by their citizens, but acts of war that kill, injure and traumatise tens of thousands, sometimes millions, almost invariably go unpunished.

Therefore, if you like violence and murder do it as part of a large group, and you'll probably get away with it.

Because they legitimise these actions by saying they are trying to being about democracy or freedom.

Ie Vietnam,iraq,Afghanistan etc.

I watched that brilliant Vietnam doc the other week

There was an actual quote from a general which said ..in order to protect this village, we need to destroy it.
