Writing a magazine article today on this subject and thought I would canvass you fellow fabbers with two questions: what would make you reduce your carbon footprint and are you willing to reduce it at home ??.. |

Would love to install a heatpump but despite gov grants (in Ire) it's still too expensive. My house is really well insulated but I use oil to heat it.
Electric car would also be great but again the initial outlay is prohibitive |

"Agreed. It’s the cost I keep hearing and access to technology.. . Are the Irish gov not heading towards net zero. "
In fairness they have said they are and would be great if they could but until this technology gets a lot cheaper reaching those targets will be difficult. Also the need to tackle agri emissions is going to ruffle a lot of feathers ...or cow hides |

I'm willing to work to reduce my carbon footprint as much as possible.
Make people aware of what choices they can make to reduce their carbon footprint.
Besides getting the bus to work...or car sharing..not flying, travelling...being aware of your energy consumption at home..what else can you really do?
Will people make the hard choices to really make an impact.
Give up comfy modes of transport.
No holidays etc...I don't think so

Actually, the biggest thing you can do is breed. Think of the future, as your offspring will be using some form of carbon producing product.

Agree here, the costs at the moment are really not worth it, especially where the little bit we save here and there just means else where in the world they can chug out more emissions.
The cost to efficiency ratio is way off here, I hope in time this becomes more affordable to the masses, otherwise in the UK at least it will be a hard sell. |

UKfires has an infogram road map stating, what and when certain things are to be implemented/phased out/banned/maybe returned. I can't publish the link here
You may be surprised.
One is for cars to be lighter/smaller (err, boob implant makers have ignored that one)
more trains...HS2 cut in half. Thanks Rishi, Beeching would be happy with that (What would Portillo say???)
Planes to be from 1 airport only in each nation. Belfast, Glasgow and Heathrow, will be the only UK airports open. Sorry Cardiff
Fridge freezers, cookers and washing machines will shrink too. How will duvets get washed?
This is not America, as David Bowie said.
They can shrink their 3.5+ litre cars down to 2 and still get to places and fill up less often.
Food will not be flown in.
Oh no! there'll no snowflake almond milk or 1 day only edible avocados.
Never mind what about tea, coffee and let's not mention rice, will never reach these shores. Do you think the channel tunnel will cope, with all that extra freight?
Yeah, right! |

The bulk of the reductions need to come via governments and corporations. China is making big strides, which is great to see. I've made some big changes but outsourcing responsibility to individuals, deflects attention away from the significant harms caused by some mega corporations who are responsible for substantial chunks of the damage that's been continuing, often as they've sought to do little to nothing. |

Not sure why this country is obsessed about going Net Zero as other countries don't seem bothered or want to follow. And if people in here really care about Net Zero then they would tell countries like Russia, China, India to cut their emissions since they're the biggest polluters but obviously most of you environmentalists wouldn't do that as there's always an excuse |

This is net zero's goals
2030-49
All new vehicle to be under 1 tonne and fully electric
All remaining airports to close, leaving one airport per nation.
All shipping declines to zero
Heat pumps for all retrofitted when possible
Beef and lamb to be phased out
All mortar and concrete to be phased out
Fertiliser reduced
This is not conspiracy, just do a search for "absolute net zero "chart, read it all and see what it means for you.
Does this mean, no tea, no coffee, no chocolate, no rice and no fags. Rail can't replace shipping, as the trains can't get to these growing nations quick enough.
This hasn't been thought out at all. More demand for power means more pylons and sub stations.
As for electric vehicles: when will the first fire engine, ambulances and police cars come out? Never mind electric military and agricultural vehicles.
Only the navies can rely on nuclear as an option. Time civilians did too. Chernobyl's plant was run by the state, 3 mile Island, Sellafield and Fukushima were all privately owned
The National Grid is going to struggle, really struggle.

People generally look at value rather than environmental impact. If it costs £3000 and reduces your gas bill by £60 per year, then it'll take 50 years before it pays for it's self.

Of course the world needs to reduce the causes of global heating, which are predominantly of human cause. The likelihood that we start to run into crossing multiple tipping points, that cause phenomenally aggravated, acceleration of heating and damage, is raised, with sustained heating levels.
Governments and corporations are the main controllers/contributors who can make the substantial changes now. For citizens, a small number of excessively high contributors, could make meaningful contributions too, such as by reducing their private jet use levels. But we must rely on corporations to alter their choices and strategies, preferably aided by government controls |

For myself I do whatever I can to reduce my carbon footprint in daily life but like all human nature it's upto a point. I holiday by plane, I holiday in an African/Arabic country that has so little carbon/plastics reduction policies mainly due to the poverty of the country. Although I stay in all exclusive environment where everything is provided.
For me 1 of the biggest requirements to reduce carbon footprint is population reduction. Far less humans = far less carbon. |

I think mos people would like to reduce their carbon footprint and help tackle climate change, but at the moment the costs are ridiculous and don't not justify that initial outlay. Then there is the lack of performance from a lot of the items and products designed to help, they simply don't do the job as good, what ever you are trying to do.
I believe the days will come, but in the UK we will struggle due to our climate to use it for energy. Large parts of the world have an abundance of free energy and when they learn to harness that, we will be left behind. A few years away yet. |

Not a ‘denier’ by any stretch but someone, somewhere, is making a lot of money out of the climate change scare.
We’ve had changes in climate from one extreme to the other since time began. This isn’t new, yet we’re all now getting taxed and restricted to high heaven - some of it with no logical thought (LEZ zones in Scotland being a prime example).
Is there climate change? Yes, absolutely.
Is it solely the fault of ‘us’. No. There’s a clue in the name.
Can we halt, stop or reverse it. No.
What happened to the ozone layer…Remember that? Millions of glam metal heads frantically looking for a solution for their hairdressing needs of a Saturday evening and mass replacement of white goods.
In the 60s and 70s we were on the verge of an ice age and since then an ever evolving turnaround of headline grabbing scare soundbites to make us change our ways.
We’re a pretty conceited society if we truly believe that we, as relative new comers to this rock, think we’re going to end its millions of years existence by driving a V8. K |

We got an electric car (used) when we had to replace ours in January.
We recycle as much as we can.
We have water saving devices fitted and use rainwater to water the garden.
We don't use plastic bottles but instead carry metal reusable ones or thermal cups for tea/coffee.
We leave part of our garden to stay wild and have planted bee friendly plants and trees.
We eat a lot less meat than in the past, often being plant based but not always.
There's probably other things too. |

Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear. This is gross ignorance of the facts.
'We know this warming is largely caused by human activities because the key role that carbon dioxide plays in maintaining Earth’s natural greenhouse effect has been understood since the mid-1800s. Unless it is offset by some equally large cooling influence, more atmospheric carbon dioxide will lead to warmer surface temperatures. Since 1800, the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has increased from about 280 parts per million to 410 ppm in 2019. We know from both its rapid increase and its isotopic “fingerprint” that the source of this new carbon dioxide is fossil fuels, and not natural sources like forest fires, volcanoes, or outgassing from the ocean.'. (Source - climate.gov)
In short, around 100% of the heating since the start of the Industrial Revolution, has been caused by human activities. There's no uncertainty about this, amongst experts. CO2 and Methane (CH4) are the main drivers for this heating, due to our activities.
We know the natural influences on our climate, outside of the human caused heating and we're left with 100% of that heating being ours.
The great thing about science is that it's an iterative process, with improvements gradually increasing our accuracy and understanding. Looking back on older forecasts, we've all been able to understand that current models and predictions are significantly different and better. |

Your opinion isn't supported by the huge wealth of evidence that we have. See my earlier post. Natural influences and changes are not a part of the huge amount of global heating that humans have caused. They're insignificant by comparison. |

I would like to see a concerted effort to stop off shoring our carbon emmisions to India and China and claiming we are cutting them.
Punitive taxation and fines that are implemented before we can introduce the proper technologies and processes is just resulting in the carbon heavy parts of the supply chain being outsourced to foreign countries rather than investing in the technology and infrastructure domestically. |

My opinion is common sense and there is no "true wealth of evidence" as all dismissed by equally qualified sceptics, why would the ice age stop short of the whole world.
Lots of salaries & businesses depend on the climate change myth & we cannot have any true idea of past temperatures given poor quality data.
You stick with the myth, I,ll enjoy the sun & ever changing weather as have lived near 60 yrs so true experience of it. |

One of many not being taken seriously. In the industry I work in our equipment is fitted with a lot of technology to mitigate carbon, as soon as it becomes past it's (European) service life the carbon reducing tech is stripped off and it is exported to another country where it is used. Kind of negates the benefits if the majority of the actual service life is spent belching out carbon |

Not doing a thing when the current technology is so expensive and useless
Heat pump that costs a fortune then still needs electricity from a non renewable source and can’t even heat your home sufficiently in winter months
Electric cars same problem as above
Those bio mass plants burn through a forest worth of wood chip a day there is no way they can grow trees at the rate that they are burning them
We are still decades away from anything usefull

It’s all rubbish and a money making machine as people have been brain washed on the eco subject...
The history of the earth can be seen in the exposed coastal cliffs for millions of years the earth rotates and the sun and moon are like a piece of elastic where one gets closer one gets further away..
Causing the hot and cold/global climate change..
You can’t stop this effect happening however many times you turn your tv off at night from standby...
The reason mostly the sea levels are rising all over the world is all country’s keep doing land reclamation and dumping the land back in the sea to build on..:
Also check out the arcamedis principal on water levels...
The world keeps putting those massive cruise ships etc etc in the sea by the thousands worldwide.:
Which raises the sea levels which causes land erosion elsewhere and melts the ice caps...
Basically if the whole world does there bit and not just the wealthy countries it will help but will never stop it...
They tell me to turn my tv off at night...
Then look at Las Vegas!!! |

If the gov was serious about Climate change, it wouldn't allow SUVs (aka boob implants) to use more metal, more rubber and more fuel than is absolutely necessary.
Naaah! Lobbying from car makers lines the party politictal machinery. |

"Carbon fibre wind turbine blades that are decommissioned with end up where exactly? "
Wind turbines blades that are decommissioned are generally made of Fibre-Glass based composites. Many of them in the past had ended up being buried. As with many things, the technology required to recycle these blades lagged a long way behind the technology that made them... nobody knew there was a problem until they started to decommission them.
There are now many companies specialising in keeping these blades out of landfill. There are companies making them into a cement substitute, others chemically separating the constituent parts to make tough industrial parts, or manhole covers. |

"Carbon fibre wind turbine blades that are decommissioned with end up where exactly?
Usually buried in a pit next to the turbine. "
The blades account for only a small percentage of the entire turbine structure. Between 85% and 92% (by mass) of all decommissioned wind turbines has been recycled... and with new technologies dealing with the blades, that figure is rising ro nearly 100% going forward. |
