Happy Birthday from yesterday to one of Britain's greatest singer-songwriters, Paul Weller, who celebrated with yet another No1 album.
What are your favourite Weller songs or memories from his long and varied career? |

You cheeky got
Smacked bottom to you!
I never liked the jam, but some of his solo stuff was ok, but the head shake was more for the "greatest singer songwriter" accolade.
I do like You Do Something To Me.
That's beautiful xc |

"One of the best live moments I've seen was Paul weller coming on stage to join noel Gallagher during an acoustic set, they sang butterfly collector, not the best song but was awesome "
That's on you tube somewhere. I didn't see The Jam or Style Council live but have seen him solo many times, and he's still a brilliant live performer. |

Never got to see the jam either unfortunately, always wanted them to reform for a couple of gigs but won't ever happen |

Funnily enough have just been reading an article about PW that named a Top 10 across his career and was absolutely gob smacked that Tube Station didn't get a mention - it's a kitchen sink drama put to song just perfectly, full of menace and love and so much more - the pictures it paints in your head are vivid and real.
Style Council era for me has to be Headstart For Happiness - just one of those songs that exudes joy and makes you smile
Of his solo stuff I have to confess that most things after Stanley Road I have found hit and miss with the odd gem tucked in there such as Floorboards Up or Fast Car/Slow Traffic but my favourite probably has to be Can You Hear Us Holy Man? Particularly when it morphs into Magic Bus when played live.
Honourable mentions also for:
Butterfly Collector
Bitterness Rising
Money Go Round
Private Hell
Little Boy Soldiers
The Lodgers
Promised Land
Into Tomorrow
Peacock Suit
Fly
English Rose
Precious
That's Entertainment
Strange Town
In The City
....and many many more |

I was going to say what would be your favourite PW song that wasn’t a single but this post (mostly) covers that, but where’s Happy Together Now?
Second track on The Gift. Sad I know that but I’m a massive Jam head.
Also my favourite overall is Down in a Tube Station at Midnight:
A distant echo
Of far away voices boarding
Far away trains.
So nearly a haiku! |

It was in the "many many more" bit
And there really are so many I could name...
Happy Together Now
Running On The Spot
To Be Someone
Monday
Pretty Green
But I'm Different Now
Liza Radley
Mr Clean
Billy Hunt
Saturday's Kids
Thick As Thieves
Man In The Corner Shop
And that's just The Jam era |

Thanks GeminiMan for those great suggestions. I'll add two from either end of his career:
Got By in Time, from In the City and Long, Long, Road from A Kind Revolution - about 40 years apart but both great songwriting. |

Was lucky enough to see him in some very small venues (Mean Fiddler and Subterranea to name two) when he started out solo under the Paul Weller Movement banner and he didn't quite have enough new material so dipped into his back catalogue to complete the set, but saw him play the likes of Into Tomorrow, Here's A New Thing and Uh Huh Oh Yeah in their formative modes |

I saw him as The PW Movement at Brixton Academy which was probably his biggest solo gig at that point. Steve Marriot had died the day before and he played Tin Soldier in tribute. |

Got caught out the other day mind - this came up on my shuffle play and I immediately thought it was a version Town Called Malice from the intro...

Another case of Weller borrowing riffs? |

Had the VHS tape of that gig and loved the version of Tin Soldier which he played quite regularly back then |

Wow. Obviously Malice has a big Motown groove but I'd never heard that before! He certainly does like a homage or three |
