Hello!

First time posting a thread on here...not sure if im in the right place?

Any sci fi film and reading fans on here? Im talking hard core filth....like babylon 5, original dr who, stalker, war of the worlds ...and occasionally softcore like star wars?

Apologies if ive totally missed a thread that exists!

Soft core vs hard core?

Nah!

Sci-fi is sci-fi.

I’ve read and watched a huge amount of the genre, my favourites are Star Wars, battlestar galactica (new and og), Babylon 5, Blade Runner, Philip K Dick, Frank Herbert...

The original 3 star wars films were the best of the whole series, it went downhill when Disney got their hand on it.

Episode 1-3 should never have been done, as for the last 3 I watched the first and said no more.

The Expanse, Aliens, Predator, Terminator, Battlestar Galactica, 2000ad, philip k dick, district 9, elysium, primer, Akira all on our favourites list.... World's end harem is particularly appropriate for fabbers! The laundry files by Charlie Stross is also particular favourite.

Totally agree - they really hit the hyper violent, seedy tone right on the nose. Also it was a genuine pleasure to watch a film that didnt feel the need to give 2 hours of context and back story, but still felt hugely immersive in that world. The same can be said of the last mad max (another killer film)

Not sure, think they were supposed to start filming last year and it has been delayed as a result. It's been in production for a while with rebellion so it's unlikely to get cancelled.

"We're both more than partial to a bit of sci-fi.

The Expanse, Aliens, Predator, Terminator, Battlestar Galactica, 2000ad, philip k dick, district 9, elysium, primer, Akira all on our favourites list.... World's end harem is particularly appropriate for fabbers! The laundry files by Charlie Stross is also particular favourite.

...and who can forget HHGTTG! as it's towel day today we were prompted for an idea to update our profile picture to the current new one. "

Towel Day! I did not know about this fine celebration! I always know where mine is, and that is sadly not in my gallery yet... I shall see if I can do something belatedly about that!

For books I'll read anything by

Peter F. Hamilton

Neal Asher

and of course the legendary Iain M. Banks - who is sorely missed

You lot are bloody lightweights.

Not a single mention of Space: Above and Beyond that I can see. I am looking at my boxset right now which is sat next to my three foot wingspan handmade by me Sa-43 Hammerhead... And yes I have a bloody big motor strapped to its arse and managed to get it to fly.

I am King of the Nerds!

Also I just started S3 of b5. Again

Well done! And yes dark skies was awesome.. let me try to remember some random details .... John lowehbach or something was the bloke, jt Bach and Jeri Ryan played the secondary characters. I used to watch it at some insane time of the night. It was class!

Books, I'm more towards the fantasy than Sci Fi but Sherri S. Tepper did a few crossover genre books. X

Yay someone else who agrees Star Wars is shite haha ...

How about the old Sean Connery classic OUTLAND

just downloaded it to rewatch. And I like the expanse, just getting into that now.

As for books, Christopher Brookmyre had a good one recently but can't remember the title. It's his first sci-fi.

Just - massive sci-fi fan and have worked on some amazing projects. Love a great film or series. Definitely not Star Trek in any form though.

Becky - not her thing..

Anyone into Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time? The series was being made into TV before Covid, dunno what's happening now...

I also love the Mistborn novels, the fantasy equivalent of Firefly

I love sci-fi, but get really put off when it becomes to political. It runs the escapism for me.

Star Trek also bores me now (though I enjoyed the original series). Might be partly because it veers into politics a fair bit.

My favourite author is Issac Asimov who (most of you probably know) coined the term robotics and came up with the 3 laws of robotics which have been followed in many sci-fi shows / films (including Star Trek) since.

I loved dark skies when it was one, never understood why it didn’t get a longer run but then that’s true for quite a few shows I like so maybe that says something about my taste more than anything

Other favs for me are B5, sg1, seaquest dsv, discovery, sliders and of course x files

Loved lexx when it was on the scifi channel, rewatched it recently, it has aged but not as terribly as I thought it would.

I started watching something on amazon which was very, very good and had a great cast but I can't remember what it was... It was about secret tech and a false flag attack trying to start a war between Mars and earth...if anyone knows it.

Good scifi reads I'd recommend: the Mars trilogy by Kim Stanley Robinson (can be a bit hard going in places but well worth sticking with!) and seven eves, can't remember the author though.

It's not that I have a terrible memory, I'm just naturally discrete...

That sounds like it might be the Expanse you are talking about there, which is imo, about the best sci fi show ever made.

The Mars trilogy is good too - been a long while since I read it though

I love sc-fi, perfect antidote to the awfulness I have to deal with at work sometimes.

Never saw war of the worlds to the end and I’ve never seen the last series of battle star galactica.
