"I fancy women, I don’t fancy men, ergo women are better looking then men.
Simple maths. "
Yep that’s the same answer I’d say too

"Are men better looking than women"
If you are purely basing this on an individuals facel recongition.
You will find it is an even balance between the species as the world is about balance regardless of make up.
Men and woman used make up through out history. However men stopped because it was thought to be 'femine. A form of social conditioning!!
There is a scientific formula that dictates whether a person is good looking or not.. women use make up to enhance their own features to bring them up the scientific formula to a attract a better mate.
Why. Because woman are clever.
Men have only just rediscovered make up. To catch up.... |

Attraction comes in all shapes and forms. Make up isn't a mask, most women use it as a way to make theirselves feel good not to attract men. If a man was only attracted to me with make up on, there's not much point continuing with him further.
And let's face it, if men's make up became mainstream.. you guys would all be doing it too! |

As a rule women age better than men but that's not always the case.
Women have more cosmetics available to them ie. Nails, hair extensions, make up.
I suppose it depends on the person and how they present themselves? |

Yeah all of us women wear a ‘mask’ of make up along with our ‘cheating’ wonderbras solely to attract men.
Because obviously that’s our ultimate goal in life! To look good for men!
Couldn’t possibly be that’s it’s for US - to make ourselves feel good

I don't wear make up? Am just me ...
It's very subjective, I like men therefore I find men more attractive though can find both men and women aesthetically beautiful but attractive is way more than skin deep
I, personally, think make up is more about how people find themselves rather than attracting others |

If you wear make up and other accessories to make your self feel better and look presentable, you're trying to tart up to attract men. If you be natural and don't conform to societal ideas of beauty, you’re some troll who’ll never get a fella. Its not all about men. Tired of the men vs women crap. Its not healthy. |

Absolutely. I've often asked people, to nonplussed looks in return, what a make up routine for men would look like. Presumably it'd be intended to look stronger, more powerful, so what would that be? |

A lot of men do wear makeup to varying degrees. For some it's simple foundation to even out skin tone and some lip gloss, others it's more. |

I guess so. I just expect there could be an alternative universe where I have 10 different tubes of coloured goos and pastes that I deem somehow essential before I go out the door. I'm guessing they'd be to make me look as much like Jason Momoa as possible. Maybe I'd need 20! |

I used to wear nail varniah and mascara in my '80s 'rock god' days - for myself but it did attract a few women (who were all jealous of my naturally blonde wavy hair).
I can appreciate the aesthetics of anybody but find women, from a sexual point of view, more physically attractive than men. But personality can decrease or increase attractiveness for me and I don't always find what is society's view of physical desirability desirable.
In my experience physical attractiveness is not a good indicator of sexual compatibility. |

"Men don’t wear a mask of make up to attract the opposite sex so is the answer yes? "
Men lie to attract the opposite sex. They grovel, they write confrontational forum threads.
I prefer women that don’t wear lots of makeup, but personality is what attracts me and keeps me interested, whichever gender they are. |

"Makeup enhances features not mask them
"
I'm not in the "hate make up" camp, as has been said above its about you feeling good about yourself, and that is the part that matters regardless. But let's not kid ourselves, it is used to cover up and mask just as much as it enhances - not directly as the OP implies though.
Bad skin days, acne/scars etc. |

Scientific = the symmetry of faces etc.
Societal/cultural experiences do influence. As do traumas and early experiences which become hard wired.
Most people find others attractive without knowing why.
None of that changes what I said tho.
Unless another finds you attractive - you are not attractive.
Attraction needs two bodies.
Like planets, magnets etc...... |

The standard stuff can though, the main stuff. Feminine features, fave symmetry, hip to waist ratio.
These things are hard wired in. So much so that studies have been done on blind from birth men and even with only touch they can pick the most symmetrical face, the more prefer hip to waist ratio.

Men don't rely on beauty to attract mates? Really? They don't work out to get all buff and shit to attract mates? They don't spend thousands of pounds on grooming themselves each years (one of the fastest growing industries I believe).
How many threads do we see where men bemoan the fact that they are not adinis like men and so no one wants to touch their peepee?

Depends on who doing the looking. Men are men, you get what you see usually (but not always), if you are a 5 or a 6 then usually you will say that way. A bit of gym work and you can move up, but how you look is how you look.
Women are able to take themselves up levels with nice makeup, fake tan, nice underwear etc, a natural 5-6 can easily got to a 7. Add in some beauty treatments and they are a 8-9.
The question is, which do you prefer, id take the made up, sexy underwear wearing women anyway, who gives a fuck what they look like naturally.
However for a meet or even more, I’d take a mature, sexually liberal, horny lady over anyone no matter what their visual attractiveness is, I would find that a hell of a lot more attractive. |

But surely that says way more about men's perception of beauty than it does anything else. If men have such a moveable scale, why are women labelled as cheating in the beauty stakes? |

Make up is an option for men too. It's not exclusive to just women. Men are just and every bit as capable of "faking ourselves up" to compete with them, but we don't. They have that kind of advantage, because we as a society look down upon men in make up, thus removing ourselves from a more level playing field within that department. One major difference is that men are much more visually focused than women, so make up etc has a larger impact for a man. |

I'm going to disagree with you there. I find some very noticeable make up looks really great. I think it depends on why the observer thinks the person is wearing it. I don't assume that a woman is wearing makeup to attract men, I know some might be but loads of us aren't. I'm as straight as a person can be but I love really heavy eye makeup on some women and men, huge false eyelashes, dark shadow etc. I'm also a big fan of scarlet lips. There is nothing sexual about it nor do I believe it makes the wearer more or less beautiful, I just like it. |

Talking of the news and weather, you never see an unattractive woman doing either of them.
Male newsreaders can be as plain as day, but the women have to be made up and looking good for their close up Mr DeMille.

Yeah you know what, your right. The bright eye shadow, fake lashes, unbelievable the red lipstick. All very sexy |

"I’d say women because they rely on beauty to attract a mate where as men don’t. So women have been evolving for millions of years specifically to enhance beauty
The idea of beauty changes so often though, evolution couldn't keep up with it.
The standard stuff can though, the main stuff. Feminine features, fave symmetry, hip to waist ratio.
These things are hard wired in. So much so that studies have been done on blind from birth men and even with only touch they can pick the most symmetrical face, the more prefer hip to waist ratio.
We’re creatures of design at the end of the day.
Are they though? There was a time when plump women were all the rage (I can't spell the word but there's loads of paintings of plump women lol). Marlyn Monroe was once considered the sexiest woman alive, today's she's be called fat.... Pretty but fat. A few years ago it was all about size 0 supermodels, now maybe a size 10 will do.
Popular in mainstream media doesn’t = what men liked. I think it’s pretty fairly consistent with what guys like tnough tout history and lots of it seems to share certain ratios across different sized women
Any references to your thoughts? Mainstream usually indicates high interactions so why would something men don't like appear in popular mainstream media?
Most media isn’t reflective of what the majority want, it’s often a small group that push an idea or style or whatever and the rest just go along for the ride. That’s how I feel it is. "
Ah. So in your opinion popular mainstream beauty ideals are not popular... Got it |

Attraction is subjective, one person's attractive is another person's turn off.
The whole makeup debate yawn... I wear it for myself, there's days I go full on face, there's others I wear none at all, at the end of the day I can't wear it 24/7 so a person is going to see me without it at some point so why put on a facade that will eventually be removed in order to attract someone |

Make up is an art form now.

It is and I don't know if I'm alone in this but I know that a person isn't going to look the same when they remove it. |

"And hands up I'll be the first to admit I look better with makeup than without, but it still doesn't mean I wear it purely to attract someone "
I’ve learned this recently. I look better with a little powder, but I still put it on even if I’m out with the guys because it makes me feel more comfortable

My last girl got it so I don’t know, it’s a little round tin with a little like sponge pad in it, I just rub a little bit of that on and it evens up my awful Irish skin tone |

"I’d say women because they rely on beauty to attract a mate where as men don’t. So women have been evolving for millions of years specifically to enhance beauty
Yes, yes..... Not all men but then not all women
Women more so
Evolutionaly women evolved to attract via physical beauty
Men evolved to attract through social hierarchy, ability to provide and protect etc
I'd appreciate a pointer to reading about the above theories on evolution.
Start with the selfish gene by Richard Dawkins to get a firm understanding of how genes and evolution work. He also did a great book on memes called Virus of the mind which is worth a read "
Thanks. I've read Dawkins but I asked for pointers to what you quote re evolution.

I’ve got books at home I can’t remember the name of, endless podcasts I could probably find, but I’m not gonna paraphrase countless hours of reading and listening as I’ll do the authors a disservice. You’re welcome to just disagree |

I thought men evolved to like things like wider hips as they are signs of fertility. Facial symmetry in both sexes is another evolved attractive feature as it's a sign of health and asymmetry is an indicator of something going wrong at a key developmental stage. But this applies to both genders not women specifically.
One theory is that faces that display less damage by free radicals after sun damage for example are more attractive and appear more youthful. So I guess make can help disguise signs of aging. |

Yeah. So I guess what we call “attractive” is what our genes call “good baby making skills”.
Guys love young looking women with certain hip to waist ratio because it’s a sign they’re very fertile.
Women love popular confident successful men because it’s a sign that he can provide for and protect that baby.
Evolution is crazy. If a wasp can learn through evolution to know it needs to find a spider to lay its eggs in, without anyone telling it, just imagine the crazy hard wired things we have in our complex brains
Very interesting |

I think in previous generations attraction was based on the perceived fertility of both genders. And the ability of males to provide a stable environment.
But I don't think it's as clear cut these days. We had the 90's where being waif thin with no hips was all the rage. And I think many women are changing what they look for in a mate, men who are looking to take a more active role in child rearing are more attractive rather than just seen as bread winners. There is definitely a nature versus nurture debate to be had with attractiveness. |

I think that’s where memetics and Richard Dawkins virus of the mind cone into play.
We’ve evolved these brains so complex and powerful that we can try to over ride naturally instincts.
We should all be baby making machines as soon as we become fertile, yet many people hold off until the time is right. Many go into their 30s/40s still not wanting kids. This should go against every single biological drive we have.
It can be good or it can be bad. Our caveman brains aren’t designed for this world |
