Collectors or minimalist?

Do you like to declutter regularly?

Do you like a minimalist approach?

Clothes you haven't worn on the past six months, off to the charity shop they go.

Does 'stuff' hold no sentimental value to you?

Or, do you like collecting stuff...maybe it reminds you of fond memories?

Are you surrounded by things that make you feel good?

Is your wardrobe full of clothes you'll never maybe wear again but you can't get rid of?

What happens when a minimalist partners up with a collector?

What's your style?

Used to be a collector but now my daughter regularly clears out my stuff to either wear herself or sell. It’s great

I forgot about selling it on and making some cash...that's a great idea!

I'm very bad at holding onto stuff. Nowadays I try to accumulate as little as possible in the first place. I'm careful only to buy stuff that is really useful and valuable to me. Luke

I snapped during lockdown and got really brutal with my wardrobe i found i had stuff id not worn for 4 years. I have a habit of buying say a black lacoste tshirt and thinking ohhh i may get a yellow, pink, white, green, grey, orange... then not wear 4 of them ever so just had a good clear out. Ive gone from 2 double wardrobes full to 1 double, i had 12 suits i kept a dark blue, grey and my favourite a t one.

I have collected but don't anymore. I enjoy buying books and will always have more books than I can read. I am not sentimental about "stuff". I do declutter every now and again but quite easily clutter again. I'm an enigma.

I sometimes do that...buy different colours of the same item. I've even bought 2 of the same thing because I liked it so much. And sods law dictates that 1 usually gets ruined

Clothing I try and get rid of annually. Some pieces I find difficult to get rid of. I've spent lockdown clearing out the study - I'm a bit of a sentimentalist when it comes to letters, old essays, cards. I realised it was ridiculous hanging on to a second year paper on an obscure poem.

My partner is very much a minimalist and puts up with my sentimentality by ignoring it. I'm not too much of a collector, more a collector of words.

I have a phobia of collecting. I’ve moved about most of my life and always have a sense of not collecting more than suitcase full.

Of course, that’s bollocks because collections get dumped at my parents house whenever I move. I simply move with my one suitcase.

Moving two times in the past six months has helped me declutter my clothes as I had a clear out as I packed, got one more move to do so when I get my bags out of storage I'll have another cull. My only weakness is lbds I have far too many of them

I had to move suddenly recently and packed my one suitcase. I found I had SEVEN pairs of grey trousers. WHY??? I don’t even recall buying that many pairs of trousers!! The rubbish we collect, honestly.

I used to be a collector but in my 30's I moved abroad with literally one bag of possessions and loved it, so ever since I've been ruthless about hoarding and hate having too much of any material thing.

Sorry, what is a lbds?

Moving is great for de-cluttering, isn’t it? I like it.

Anything of my mum's, or what she or my children gifted me, I keep.

I don't buy ornaments or pictures for myself. I have nothing on any wall in my house.

I will throw clothing when it's not wearable any more, and I don't buy clothes, or shoes, for the sake of it, as I don't like things hanging around that aren't useful.

As am I. That’s why mp3, mp4, e-books and so on are great for me. My last big move, I had 3 large boxes of books alone to remove. I couldn’t even give them away I’m not exactly sure what happened to them. I simply left them behind and told the movers to get rid of it. It hurt though.

Going to ebooks would save me a lot of space but I can't do it. For me picking up a physical book is an escape from all the connected electrical world.

If I haven't used it in the last year then I don't need it. Wait, on that basis I'd be throwing my own cock out!

I'm generally very minimalist but I do collect a few weird geeky things too

I can be pretty brutal.

I'm not sentimental about stuff and I don't like mess so I don't buy lots of stuff I don't need.

I do have clothes and shoes I don't wear though and one cupboard of doom that I never speak of

.

Have a curated collection of specific high quality items.

I prefer to collect specific things not to have the biggest collection of them, but because they have a specific value. I don't like clutter, but I do indulge in a personal collection which I maintain, trade, trim etc.

I am a boarder line hoarder, I try and make sure I invite someone round for dinner every other month as a reason to declutter, during lockdown my place was getting rather full but the people in the flat above me was kind enough to flood my flat, so alot of stuff has gone.

Currently doing up our house so im trying to get rid of stuff. Not easy with four kids. The older two are more into electronics and lego now so I can declutter all the plasticky toys and old books. the other two will hold onto broken toys for dear life

Minimalist. I like to keep things simple. One small shelf, one small ornament is my approach.

Less to dust too. Lol.

I go from one extreme to the other.

I have a few treasured items from my childhood and my sons.

I have sorted pretty much a whole wardobes worth of clothes to sell, things that don't fit or never worn.

I'm obsessed with cats and accumulated lots things on that theme, but clear out occasionally.

My house doesn't have much storage, which is probably a good thing or it would all be in the loft

All of these things are me!

My mum is a hoarder and I vowed to be nothing like her and have a nice simple home. Tho only thing I do go overboard with is crafting stuff, but I'm planning a clear out on that soon as the kids are getting older now and we do a lot less.

I collected things for years, not hording just investing into things that I like.

Now that my situation is changing I am having to evaluate what I both need and treasure most. The list of what I need reduces every day.

Now it's just a matter of finding a good home for things. Gym equipment seems to be the easiest these days.

Just remember to be careful of mirrors etc and what you are wearing when taking pictures of the items you are selling

Our toy collection is the only thing that grows as I hate getting rid of something that may be useful later on.

Otherwise I prefer and would like a minimalist approach. Sadly the place isn’t big enough:has enough storage for me to make sure things are put away out of sight.

There was something I read a few years back that helped put clutter into perspective, and I am going to badly paraphrase it now, that went along the lines of we collect a lot of crap and run out of space, so buy a bigger house and promptly fill that with crap, and so need a bigger house etc. You end up wasting money on storage for things you don’t need, instead of spending it on things that bring you hapiness.

Clothes I wear to destruction. I do tend to collect crap from my former lives, and they litter my man cave. I use to hoard diy leftovers but I'm cured of that, almost..
