I had a blue mini with a green bonnet and two leather belts and buckles attached cos the bonnet wouldn't stay down ....... loved that car I did.
How did I know it was time to get a new one ? It was fucking nicked from outside the Victoria Monument while I was in a Bernie's Inn !

Peugeot 107. I got a new car after 2 years when Peugeot phoned me with an offer on a 108 that I couldn't refuse. I was getting a bit fed up with the windscreen freezing on the inside in winter to be fair. |

Was talking with my friend the other day about this and how basic they were. Mine was a mk1 Astra in metallic green, no ABS, power steering, central locking or electric windows and a single speaker in the centre of the dash. I bloody loved that car until some uninsured twat wrote it off. O Bertha, for just one more day |

Talbot Samba, bit like a Peugeot 105, 4 speed gearbox and went like the clappers.
My first years insurance cost nearly as much as the car if I remember. |

It was a Vauxhall Corsa with an electrical fault that no-one could fix. I became an expert in roll-starting it off my parents steep driveway, just getting it to start in time before hitting the cars parked opposite. It had no power steering
I knew it was time to get a new car when I had to be towed off Asda's car park by my Grandad in his Jazz. And yes, I managed to bump start it on the tow rope as Grandad towed me uphill. Ahhhhh, those were the days |

1970 Datsun 510, was a fantastic car. Loved racing that through the hills surrounding San Jose. Won several trophies for Autocrossing back in the day with it.
Dad came over to visit from England went on a road trip with him along Highway 1 (PCH). He had finally quit smoking, by the time this 17 year old had finished the journey with him he was chain smoking. |

His car was fine and nothing more that a cracked towbar electrics cover, mine was a write off as was the guys car in front of my mates 4x4....he happened to be my aprenticeship training instructor too and he was not a happy bunny

VW Golf Diesel mark 1.
I was sold a pup; the upper engine had cracked and leaked like a sieve; it was returned to the vendor, and I bought a VW Golf 3 door petrol, that was an excellent vehicle.
Cars are convenient, but an astonishing waste of money.
I don't think I will ever buy another.

"It was a little Suzuki jeep, not even 1 litre. A little soft top thing. I loved it."
Me too, a 1979 Suzuki LJ80. Only a 797cc motor but the 4wd would get you anywhere in any conditions. It wouldn't get you anywhere quick but it didn't half rust fast. |

For some of us, cars are pretty essential. I wouldn't get too far without one. |

Escort mk4. My parents went to buy a dining table and noticed a car in the corner and bought it for an extra £200 because they could.
That was the first of 4 escorts, including my grandads mk2 I foolishly gave away during university.
If I'm right I've now had 6 Ford's (4 escorts, 1 mondeo, 1 smax) , 1 corsa, one 309, and a s40.
If in doubt, just get a Ford. Realised I needed a new car mostly recently when I parked my mondeo in a Ford. The wet type. |

"Nissan Micra 1.1. I'd still have it if I didn't crash the damn thing on the ice, listening to "hey Jude" on the radio. "
Had you just got to the bit where they sing "take a sad car and make it better"? |

A late 1970s Datsun Sunny 120Y.
I got it off my parents.
Great little runner, nothing went wrong mechanically, the only problem I had with it was watching the bodywork rust away. Two years later my parents got a deal from a garage, exchange a taxed and MOTed car and get £1500 off a second hand car, so as the MOT had less than a month left I gave it back to them so they got the deal. |

Renault Clio 1.2l Petrol, bought with my own money from a summer job at 17.
Without sounding like an old man seems like there’s kids everywhere driving high end Mercs, BMW’s & Audi’s on HP, which I thought would be quite a special achievement when I was younger. |

Yes, I agree. My son 18, and my daughters 20 and 23 all have much newer cars than me |

Maserati air horns to name but a few. Was even flexi enough to enjoy many "fun times" with a selection of ladies...happy days |

I had one of those rust buckets. Great engine though."
Great little cars but yeah, rust was a bit of a problem. |

A C plate Astra three door estate - pretty rare as it’s basically an astravan with windows. Sold it to upgrade then ended up buying it back three years later and was still going strong. Heck, it’s probably still out there somewhere - the damn thing was indestructible! |
