Depends what it's for. Rhubarb and custard then it should be hot. In a doughnut then it should be cold.

Either, it all depends what it is with.

I have a confession to make here though.

When I used to work in a shop, in the winter I'd be out in the cold unloading palettes for a couple of hours and it would be freezing. My work mates would have hot tea or coffee to warm them up, but as I don't drink them I'd have... a mug of hot custard.

They thought I was very odd. It did the job though and was delicious

Best love story ever, Mr Birds loved his wife but she had a sweet tooth and couldnt eat eggs. He invented Birds custard powder so she could have a sweet sauce without eggs
