Apparently there is it room on the menu for one vegan or veggie dish so pubs and restaurants are serving vegan to cover both bases. No more halloumi fries and some veggies are annoyed. How should this be ended? Pistols at Dawn?

Eat at places that are better suited to your lifestyle and/or belief system instead of giving custom to places that offer “token” meals.

veganism meets the criteria to qualify for protection under the Equality Act 2010 now hence the reason most places added the option in their menus but I personally don’t prefer to eat as _etcpl referred best ‘token meals’ as it’s obviously done to show they support beliefs equally but nothing else.

Restaurants really need to get better at veggie and vegan options.

Even if you do eat meat you don't need to eat it every bloody meal.

You don’t ‘need’ to be vegan or vegetarian (unless you have a particular medical condition that requires you to be meat free), it’s a ‘choice’ people make. Just like eating meat is a ‘choice’.

I’m glad I live in a country where people are able to make these ‘choices’ and are not obligated to justify them to anyone but themselves.

The simple thing to do is to eat at establishments that cater for your choices.

Not all non meat eaters are vegan.

Not all non meat eaters are veggie.

Everything on the planet that we eat is VEGAN, unless it came from an animal.

It's never caused a problem in our house.

Everything is laid out people take what they want ......... End of.

The problem has been made by the media and food manufacturers who have made non meat eating into something it isn't.

For the record. I don't eat meat. I'm vegan.

I don't give a FLYING FUCK what you eat. Eat what you want. Suck on a chop all day. Bring around a chicken on a stick ..... no one I know gives a shit about what you eat.

I agree that we (people in general) don't need to be vegan or veggie... but again speaking generally, people do need to eat less meat.

Restaurants should make this easier for people by offering a wider range of tasty options.

I get that but times are hard and places are trying to be inclusive. So when I open my restaurant I have a dilemma because I really don’t want to serve chips, Juno food like burgers or very plain food but when large groups book with the token person who doesn’t like anything spicy what should I do , keep a bag of frozen oven chips and burgers for those people? I could do nice rainbow fries in olive oil, salt and pepper but they wouldn’t like them so why bother.... so I compromise my own standards or risk turning away custom by not being inclusive

I agree completely. My daughter has been a vegetarian since she was 12 - her choice, and I eat meat fish and vegetarian and vegan. Most of the chain restaurants offer a very lazy choice for vegetarian and vegan and the ingredients are not always 100% vegan or have been cooked alongside the meat menu. If they were more inventive and educated they would offer the choice of lovely food that would appeal to all their customers.

Hey, I'm not being nasty - please read this in the best possible light. But most of that isn't true.

Land take for meat farming is actually far greater than that needed for an equivalent amount of calorific value of non-meat farming.

Also, all of those animals have to eat something! Loads (it might actually be most) of land is taken up growing food for cows etc to eat.

Meat is actually a really inefficient way of feeding humans!

I'm not even veggie/vegan by the way, I just try to eat a low meat diet.

There is (used to be/hopefully still is)a glorious veggie café in Canterbury that got this so right. Most of their breakfast menu was veggie/vegan. They had ONE meat option, full English. You could have a veggie or vegan full English as well and those were astoundingly well made from scratch with a huge plate of alternative foods BUT if you ordered the meat version you were served something that contained meat(ish) cheapest shop bought bacon, sausage eggs etc and then they charged extra for the meat breakfast on the basis they had to clean the grill/surfaces after to do back to vegan/veggie.

Inclusive hey

Motto of the story.. eat where its good for you
