"Wasn’t this an Only Fools And Horses storyline? "
No. A family arrived at their home in Sussex after driving from France. They discovered a man had climbed into their roofbox when they stopped at a supermarket. They called the police who were very helpful. Months later they've received a £200 fine from the borders agency. |

Ah so this is a true life thing. Bloody hell that’s crazy and seems a little unfair. |

"I don’t have a roof box
Sounds like it would be a bad idea to get one reading this post lol
I think so I mean they look tiny but how many people could fit in one "
I suppose if they are fairly small and flexible you could get two maybe three in one of the larger ones but you may notice the car sitting a little lower than normal |

I would panic as my car has never had a roof box, so, I've nicked someone's car.
The immigrant I'd give some water to, direct to the nearest appropriate Government offices and tell them to keep schtum about how they got over the boarder.

"Damn time to start putting customs seals on the roof box now? I would be asking where the hell my luggage was lol
The stow away had thrown their possessions away. "
I'd march them straight back to France. |

"They only scan trucks I believe and with vans or Mimi buses they just take a peek and check passports of occupants"
When we went to France cars were driving through the scanning booths.
I don't know if they are x-ray only or heat scanners too.
I can't think of the right name for them at the moment. |

Ooohhh so you think there's actual electronic stuff in that goal post you drove through? I thought they were just "scarecrows" with nothing in... |

"Isn't France on the Amber list at the moment?
I mean are they on official business or a funeral visit? I hope they will be self isolating for 10 days or waiting for track and trace... "
This was when travel to France was permitted. They've only recently received the fine. |

"Am I the only one who doesn't know what a roof box is?
It's a box that goes on the roof. Of your car. "
Oh the roof isn't even on a building! I know the sort of thing you mean. People actually move in? Wow. Not exactly comfortable. |

Did you think someone took their house to France?
Sorry but this has made my day! |

They don't move in or live in it. They hide in it to get across the channel into England |

No, I thought they were saying that they came back from France and while they were away somebody had moved into the roof of their house. I just didn't know where the box came into it. |

Ahhhhhhh! Makes sense now. I apologise, but I have a vision in my head of a house somehow bobbing through customs with a box on the roof, containing an immigrant.
It's probably best for me to sleep now, I'm hallucinating! |

What makes this story is the fact that the migrants have to empty much of the family's possessions to fit in the box. So here is the dilemma. How do you treat a person who has dumped your possessions somewhere in France.. |

"The family say their dumped clothes and toiletries were worth "thousands of pounds"."
I'm sure the video camera, 4 ipads, phones, jewellery and Ralph Lauren dresses all round were also in there.
But yeah I'd be really pissed off that someone dropped my stuff and lost it for me. If someone who wasn't a migrant did that at your local supermarket you'd call plod and wait for them to spring into action.... OK.. Wait for their civilian support staff to issue you a crime ref number and then send an email saying they've explored all leads and that there is nothing more they can do and the case is now closed. |

Why didn't any shoppers in the Calais supermarket carpark notice a Sudanese man emptying thousands of pounds worth of possessions from a roof box, hiding them where the family wouldn't notice them and then climb into it ? |

Why wasn't it locked to secure the thousands of pounds worth of possessions? |

They generally pick the cars parked near the hedges and once they have opened or broken into your roofbox then an accomplice secures it and hides the discarded contents.
I heard a story where a migrant wrapped himself in aluminium foil to try and avoid the heat scanners at Calais. He actually got through with this tactic..
The family were returning home to a 21st Birthday Fancy Dress party and they were furious. The fancy dress outfits had been bought in France and they had been stored in the roofbox and discarded by the gang..
They had nothing to wear to the party but there was one unexpected outcome. The migrant won 1st prize at the Fancy Dress. The judges thought he was the tin man from the Wizard of Oz |

Then tore it up and sold it for tin foil hats? |

You wouldn't feel any fear? Not even a little bit. A stranger getting out of your vehicle and all that |

Well when I worked in sales and you need a piss at the motorway services then often valuable gear is left in your car.. |

Discovered one under the trailer once whilst still in France - was lucky for him. We weren’t going on the ferry and still had a half hour drive or so down the motorway to get on the Chunnel, I’m pretty sure he’d have been unable to hang on and there’s no way we’d have heard him over the racket of the thing. |
