I'm off to watch the grandson play in his league football...he's only 8.
I've always been quite refrained in shouting out instructions....Like get that ball, it's yours!!
I was what kind of spectator are you on the sideline when your kid is playing?
Do you shout instructions?
If they don't play/perform well do you make them work at it at home?
Or is just a game and its the participating that counts.
Personally I want him to kick ass!

"No its not just a game I shouted encouragement when mine were playing oh the dirty looks my daughter used to give me were amazing "
I can just imagine you
If I knew more about football then I'd probably be more vocal!
I'm not sure the coach would like it though |

My son played rugby from 3 to 18, I used to break up the fights between opposing parents and spread the love. |

"Does watching your nephew playing Fortnite count?
It all counts
Then I'm quietly encouraging especially when he gets a headshot with the sniper rifle.
Do you play yourself?"
Only when my nephew is round - I usually last about 3 seconds even with him telling me what to do.
(I resisted the other answer ) |

Occasionally, we had a parent who would get heated!
Can’t beat spreading a bit of love |

I’m a competitive person who had a determined attitude with sports. Someone better than me - I practiced until I was better than them.
I don’t buy into the ‘it’s all about taking part’ - it’s not, it’s about pushing yourself to be the best you want to be.
But I don’t push that onto my son, he’s his own person and I’m not going to push my thoughts onto him.
When I watch him he plays with enjoyment and that’s enough for me

My eldest used to cry when we took him to football. He hated it. Fast forward & he’s a footie addict & a qualified ref!!
Youngest played rugby for a while but didn’t like it either.
Swimming was their sport. They both loved it & eldest was a training to be an instructor. Nothing better than sitting next to a chlorinated pool sweating your tits off next to the very yummy mummies

I never used to think I was all that competitive bit it turns out, I can be.
I am sure he was 5 when he first started playing. O used to watch him dancing up and down the pitch and smile.
He's past the dancing phase now |

I'm really competitive but my son is much more laid back which I like. He's only ever played sports he enjoyed and for the social side so I've learned to button it on the sidelines! |

Many years ago used to be FA,ref involved in youth football. Being parent, parents on the side-lines used to discust me the way they used to behaved, not only towards refs, other parents and their kids, especially if they made a mistake. If I had my way I'd have banned parents |

I can honestly say the parents in his team don't behave that way! |

I 100% agree with this. Far too many over zealous parents in grass roots football. I find it interesting that in academy football parents are often told to not say a thing else that will adversely impact their child’s future with the academy. And it is meant. Coaches coach and spectators spectate. Most spectators don’t know what they are talking about anyway and their opinions/advice is often spectacularly wrong. |

"We would shout instructions, but it was very much about talking part. We disliked the over enthusiastic parents. There's many cases of parents getting aggressive with each other!"
Our boys in the under 9's so this doesn't really happen....yet! |

I have seen it happen in mini soccer. Sad but people get carried away and I am glad you haven’t experienced it yet. |

"My son has a match today. Under 8's.
His club have a rule that parents must refrain from shouting instructions to players on the pitch.
It does make sense though.
"
I can imagine as a couch parents shouting instructions can be annoying and disruptive |

I supported all my boys playing rugby and went from them being 6/7 years old right up to a few years ago when injuries forced them all to stop at different ages..I had the biggest mouth and once ran on the pitch when one was out cold!!!... |

As a professional football manager, my sideline antics would probably include having a quiet chat into his ear, and trying not to undermine the manager whilst knowing I could be doing a better job |

I was horse after every game, shouting encouragement and possible tactics to my football playing son. I got carried away on many occasions, Including 'take the fucker out lad'. My boy always followed my instructions. |

On the flip side I was quite handy at hockey (field not ice). Played to a high standard and despite repeated promises my dad never once turned up to a game to watch.
*Sigh* |

"My kids have and do play competitive sports, I’m not a shouter but on many occasions have been shocked at how some parents behave and always feel sorry for the child."
Maybe because my grandson plays under 9's the parents are more polite and hold it in more, as I haven't seen bad behaviour from them.
I wonder if that will change as he gets older!

That's such a shame and how disappointing, especially as a child! |

"Did his team win? "
Nooo! THey were 2 of their best players down!
They couldn't get past the other teams defense and lost 8-0.
The other team were the better team but we already knew this.
Our team put their heart and soul into it, they really did.
My boy got proper stuck in and we are really proud of him.

Thanks and yes it really has!
What was really sad today was the loss of the 9yr old boy who was struck by lightning and died on Tuesday, whilst training.
There was a minute hand clap for him.
So very very sad! |
