I'm off to watch the grandson play in his league football...he's only 8.

I've always been quite refrained in shouting out instructions....Like get that ball, it's yours!!

I was what kind of spectator are you on the sideline when your kid is playing?

Do you shout instructions?

If they don't play/perform well do you make them work at it at home?

Or is just a game and its the participating that counts.

Personally I want him to kick ass!

Then I'm quietly encouraging especially when he gets a headshot with the sniper rifle.

If I knew more about football then I'd probably be more vocal!

I'm not sure the coach would like it though

Only when my nephew is round - I usually last about 3 seconds even with him telling me what to do.

(I resisted the other answer )

I’m a competitive person who had a determined attitude with sports. Someone better than me - I practiced until I was better than them.

I don’t buy into the ‘it’s all about taking part’ - it’s not, it’s about pushing yourself to be the best you want to be.

But I don’t push that onto my son, he’s his own person and I’m not going to push my thoughts onto him.

When I watch him he plays with enjoyment and that’s enough for me

My eldest used to cry when we took him to football. He hated it. Fast forward & he’s a footie addict & a qualified ref!!

Youngest played rugby for a while but didn’t like it either.

Swimming was their sport. They both loved it & eldest was a training to be an instructor. Nothing better than sitting next to a chlorinated pool sweating your tits off next to the very yummy mummies

I never used to think I was all that competitive bit it turns out, I can be.

I am sure he was 5 when he first started playing. O used to watch him dancing up and down the pitch and smile.

He's past the dancing phase now

We would shout instructions, but it was very much about talking part. We disliked the over enthusiastic parents. There's many cases of parents getting aggressive with each other!

Many years ago used to be FA,ref involved in youth football. Being parent, parents on the side-lines used to discust me the way they used to behaved, not only towards refs, other parents and their kids, especially if they made a mistake. If I had my way I'd have banned parents

I 100% agree with this. Far too many over zealous parents in grass roots football. I find it interesting that in academy football parents are often told to not say a thing else that will adversely impact their child’s future with the academy. And it is meant. Coaches coach and spectators spectate. Most spectators don’t know what they are talking about anyway and their opinions/advice is often spectacularly wrong.

Do you shout instructions?

As a professional football manager, my sideline antics would probably include having a quiet chat into his ear, and trying not to undermine the manager whilst knowing I could be doing a better job

Maybe because my grandson plays under 9's the parents are more polite and hold it in more, as I haven't seen bad behaviour from them.

I wonder if that will change as he gets older!
