Can anyone recommend a really good eatery in Oxford?
I’m looking to be there in a couple of weeks and may try and make a booking at an actual restaurant (for the first time in a year!)
to all the haters: I know about Google and am capable to search. I’d prefer a recommendation.
TIA

"Expecting people to reply within five minutes soon after 7am on a Sunday morning is maybe expecting a bit too much !! "
I wasn’t expecting anyone to reply. Who said anything about that? Oh, is it because I bumped my post to keep it on view? Excellent.

"I suppose it depends what food your looking for, the giggling squid food is amazing as is the banana tree but both Thai restaurants "
That sounds perfect - thank you. I love Thai! |

"Quod and Browns always used to be pretty decent. Didn’t used to rake reservations at the weekend, may have changed since lockdown."
That place looks brilliant, so I’ve booked that. Thank you for recommending |

Following this as we’ve struggled for good places to eat in Oxford in the past.
We had an expensive meal at the Ivy Oxford Brasserie and it was hugely disappointing verging on poor. The food was average and service poor. We actually felt unwelcome.
We’ve twice had excellent service at The Chequers in the town centre, the food was on the higher end of Pub food, but certainly not top level restaurant food.
Just outside of Oxford, The Fishes in Hinksey is our usual go to restaurant. Lovely atmosphere overlooking the river, top level service and a varied seasonal menu using local ingredients. Do book in advance though as it’s usually (used to be?) very busy. |

"The fishes at hinksey
Jacobs ladder at wolvercote
Out a bit further the nut tree at murcott ( Michelin star so not cheap) "
Do you mean The Jacobs Inn? If so we’ll add it to our post lockdown list.
We second you on The Fishes.

"Research is not pulling up the third one, they did own another a few years back, not sure if they have split the group or changed its name "
There was a Jacob plough in north street, Bicester.
I think it was a hotel with a bar and restaurant if that's the one he mentions, not sure if it's in the same group ? |

Jacobs plough in Bicester was bought by the owners of jacobs inn in wolvercote and they had another one but I can’t find it
Their websites are not linked although in the same style and there used to be a bit of information about the other pubs on each website but they have updated the sites and that seems to have gone |

Did a bit of digging and found an old 2017 article that said the group were the Jacobs Inn, Jacobs & Field in Headington, Jacobs Chop House, Jacob plough and Woodstock arms,
Hope covid didn't send some under.

There are a variety of places on the top floor of the Westgate Centre.
You could also try the Cowley Road - you could eat your way around the world there such is the diversity of cuisines available there. |
