OK I'm sorry to post here but I'm at my wits end.
I need some advice from the ladies regarding 'monthlies'
Are there any home remedies or over counter medicals for heaviness that have been tried and tested?
I'm using maximum night time sanitary products during the daytime and still having to change every 2 hours
Again sorry to post here but its really getting me down. |

Thank you, the dr is only doing phone consultations at the moment and they don't give a time which makes it impossible whilst at work through the week
I've tried feminax helps with the pains but not the heaviness |

"Nothing over the counter. The mirena coil stops them completely though. Suffered for a decade before i had one fitted."
Oh wow I never knew the coil would help, that may be worth looking into then x |

"I know it's hard to speak to your GP at the moment, but this is one where you really should.
If nothing else, be mindful of your iron levels, that level of flow might contribute to anaemia."
Thank you I have been feeling so run down lately and I'm wondering myself if this could be the cause x |

Ohhh ok
Some pharmacies have online doctors that will probably work better for than unpredictable phone consultations. You can probably interact with one when you finish work best of luck hun xxx |

Mine are heavy at the moment to the point I often have to change bedsheets.
I do get anaemic so I'm taking iron in the form of a spray. As the tables cause me extra stomach pain and constipation which at that time of the month makes things ten times worse.
I've found buscopan helps ease some the cramping. |

Brilliant, thank you I hadn't thought of that!
Thank you all so much for your replies.
I'll get some iron pills tonight and try the online pharmacy option tomorrow.

Contraception can help but do check and be mindful of side effects - the mirena coil was an absolute nightmare for me. I use Buscopan IBS relief to help, prescribed medication for pain and a lot of hot water bottles. Definitely check your iron levels - it takes me a few days to get back to normal.
Have you looked into a menstrual cup? I bought one recently and it's a lot better than changing pads/tampons every two hours.
I hope it's more manageable for you soon x |

The cups were a godsend for me before I had my hysterectomy. But you should definitely pursue getting a referral to a gynaecologist to see if there is an underlying issue. It's not pleasant to live with x |

Nothing ever worked for mine, and no-one ever told me that such heavy periods might not be normal, I was just expected to suffer. I went on the pill as soon as I could and it made a huge difference. It was the progesterone only pill at the time as I can’t have the combined pill. However, I’ve now been on Desogestrel for years and I rarely have a period and when I do they’re usually very light.
I hope you can find something that helps, even though it’s been over 20 years I still remember how hellish it was. |

Will echo what others have said about the acid but that can upset your stomach.
The mirena coil make quite a difference and can stop the bleeding altogether for some women. But most go from using towels to panty liners instead.
There are more extreme things if those don't work.
The advice to take iron was a good one as it can knock out your ferritin levels which is your iron stores even when your Full Blood Count is OK. It's worth asking for an FBC and ferritin levels check.
When it comes to iron tablets there are different forms of iron. If you can try and get a stomach friendly form like iron bisglycinate so you don't suffer with constipation etc and always always make sure you're taking vitamin C with your iron to help absorb it.
There are foods and drinks that can hinder absorbing iron so it's worth checking those out and avoiding them when you take the iron for a couple of hours after. |

It’s important to rule out any underlying conditions, bleeding that heavy is not normal.
I experienced that, and I’m on iron tablets and awaiting medical intervention.
The coil is helpful in stopping bleeding, but as I say, it’s important to rule out any concerns. |

Whilst you're waiting on further investigation, try Always memory foam sanitary pads. They were a God send for me. I now only have to get up once during the night, whereas it was easily 4 times before discovering them.
They're a little pricier, but worth every penny xx |

I’m going to sound totally dumb now but isn’t that normal?

Sorry your suffering, it sucks being female.
Second the iron tablets.
Mine are better, more stable, predicable since following the vitamin D protocol. Magnesium is great for so many things. Might be worth some research x |

Another vote for the mirena coil here! I'm on my 3rd now, probably my last but the first one stopped them entirely, they came back with the 2nd but only light, and this one has stopped them again. I used to be like Carrie... have you been checked for endometriosis and fibroids? X |

Not a dumb question at all. I’m like you in frequency except 1hr change for two days then reduce. I thought it was normal until the GP questioned it last check up. |

I’m only repeating what others have said but please get yourself seen by the gp. I have very heavy periods due to fibroids and am usually severely anemic to boot. The coil may be a life saver for some, but for others it’s an alternate hell causing both mental and physical problems. The best of luck to you |

Hey OP,
Sorry to hear about your having a rough time, as other's have suggested get yourself a GP telephone appt.
I used to have horrendous periods,to the point I had to wear triple protection, and would often be off work during my cycle.
I suffered in silence for too long, and eventually saw the GP , and was prescribed Mefanemic acid along with tranexamic. They suggested the Mirena coil but I didn't want to go down that route myself.
Turned out I also had fibroids and an enormous womb, so all contributed.
Please don't wait to speak to the GP, you really don't have to put up with it.
Best of luck
Sarah xxx

Dont suffer,i did for most of my life from my teens until i was 49,if you're sensitive to hormones then dont get the coil..im glad i refused it as if it doesnt suit they're reluctant to take it back out,i was looking at a hysterectomy but took the next alternative down and its worked...now my periods are so light i hardly notice them, best rhing i ever did, cant think why i waited so long,i got my life back cos as you say,its no fun having to change every couple of hours and finding somewhere to do it or not leaving the house for days. |

I have been on mefenamic acid for years. Used to work a treat, first cramp pop a (horse) tablet- go about your day. Now i take 3 at a time and get very little relief and my flow is getting heavier. This could very well be to do with being an old fart and imminently going through menopause though. I feel your pain though, I even went and asked for my bits whipped out which they refused as it wasn't necessary. I'm not going to carry another baby and my periods are still regular and heavy- my argument is its entirely bloody necessary xxxxx |

Does it not come up in conversation during your smear test? although mine done by a nurse, after that discussion I was referred to the GP. I said confused why, don’t get pain, just heavy and tiredness; response let’s just check, turns out low in iron (so on pills) and still awaiting pelvic scan. Give your gp or practice nurse a call and have a chat x |

As a mere male I can only google it, but the best result seems to be:
https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/heavy-periods/
There seem to be a number of causes such as fibroids and endometriosis but really you are going to have to see a GP and if yours will only do teleconsults perhaps you need to change GP.
The NHS site also lists a few possible remedies:
"Various treatments are available for heavy periods, including:
some types of contraception, like an intrauterine system (IUS) or the combined pill
medicines, like tranexamic acid
surgery"
My daughter suffers from endometriosis and so you have my absolute sympathy. - good luck.

Glad to see a couple of men interested in the topic. And as one of them said no need to be sorry for asking OP and we all learn from this threads. Menstruation is something that should have more attention and medical research. Every single woman is so different and there’s no one solution for all. I hope you felt better afterwards

"Raspberry leaf tea and cinnamon tea is used for heavy bleeding and toning the uterus." yes natural stuff can do wonders. A good Oregano infusion or chamomile tea are very recomendable too.

I only had a smear test a couple of months ago and I can’t remember anything apart from the fact I asked if I could keep my socks on LOL. As soon as I said it I thought why the fuck am I asking that!
I don’t remember her asking anything about my periods though.
I looked through the list of low iron and I defo match a few including the brittle nails (behind my acrylics I have done to hide it), pale skin (behind the tinted body cream I put on), I get light headed and dizzy a lot too.
Il defo give the GP a call tomorrow. Thanks! X |

Just reading through the last few comments thank you all so much and lovely that a couple of men have offered advice too! Will definitely be getting it sorted if it was just the initial couple of days I wouldn't be bothered but its like this 5 out 7 days.
Sending lots of love, your responses have meant a lot in what has been a rubbish time.
I'm such an emotional wreck

Huge hugs to you. It's a horrible thing to deal with. Had the same problem, so can fully sympathize. I ended up having to be prescribed tranexamic acid and patches. Once it had calmed down a little, had the mirena coil fitted and never looked back.
If you're getting tired too, get some of the iron supplement spray, and try and up your intake of green vegetables - spinach and kale are very good and high in iron
Hugs xx |

Be careful with herbal supplements, if it is something like adenomyosis then raspberry leaf tea is not recommended. It’s important to check contraindications, even in natural remedies. |

Everyone else has already covered what I'd advise...luckily my periods improved massively after kids.
I will say that cloth sanitary pads made a massive difference to my actual comfort levels, and you can get post partum pads which would see you through the night comfortably whilst you're sorting out other stuff. Happy to give you links and recommendations if you want to message me. They were a game changer for me.

^^^This. Raspberry leaf tea can actually be harmful, as can other supplements. See a GP and ask for the tests already described to rule out fibroids etc and ask for referral to hospital gynaecology. Take it from there |
