I really enjoy listening to a lot of classic comedy on Radio4_Extra, as well as old sitcoms on TV, but some of it really hasn't aged well at all. And some I just don't find funny at all. But I suppose humour is always subjective

Granted topical comedy will only ever have a certain shelf life, but does comedy always become dated or is at least some of it timeless?

For example the Morecambe & Wise Mr Preview sketch never fails to make me laugh, and Porridge was sublime. Yet I can't find anything funny in The Navy Lark. And I didn't understand The League Of Gentlemen on TV until I heard it on the radio and then it somehow made sense.

What does everyone else think, and what are your favourite comedies or comedy moments?

Definitely the Fork handles sketch. I love the Monty Python films too, especially Life of Brian.

Some of Billy Connolly's early stuff is a bit close to the edge but he never means to offend and he's absolutely hilarious to the point that I cry laughing x

We like all sorts of humour. Obviously I’m of an age though so I still find monty python timeless and love a bit of dark humour like the league of gentlemen. Which I didn’t get the first time around. Or the office. Now I find them hilarious.

I want to subject Lu to life of Brian and similar. But don’t imagine she’ll get it

You definitely need to introduce her to it, and let us know the outcome

Going down the more obscure route, does anyone remember Human Remains from around the turn of the century? Rob Brydon and Julia Davis

Midlands

Four candles has got to be the funniest sketch ever.

Over lockdown we watched all the Some Mothers do ave them episodes, still very funny.

Faulty Towers

Not so old, but Fonejacker and Facejacker, absolutely brilliant.

I'd forgotten about Dear John, and I used to have a box set of that on VHS

Modern Family I think is good, too, although Frasier was probably the best US comedy series

Sir Henry at Rawlinson End is a great price of radio comedy.

John Peel played this during his show in the early 80’s. Viv Stanshall’s writing and performance is unique

I like the Navy Lark and Round The Horn. The Men From The Ministry is another, but I don’t find a lot of The Goons stuff that listenable too.

Currently I quite enjoy the one about house mates with Angus Deaton as one of the characters and the one about the three sisters with Josie Lawrence.

The Dads Army ones have a subtle difference when recorded specifically for the wireless as do the Steptoe episodes.
