I was talking about this today, I have disordered eating, so you aren’t alone.

What did you do last time? Do you have support?

No I don't think you are. My mother is very old now and eating disorders weren't commonly heard of when she was young but it's my opinion that she uses lack of food and severely restricted diet as a coping mechanism. She goes through periods of being unable to eat anything but three or four foods I'm tiny quantities. I'm not suggesting that you do this but she also uses it to manipulate other people and in her mind gain approval.

You're not alone.

It's not a condition I have, but many people use food as a coping mechanism.

Are you in contact with your GP about it, for their support or the support of more specialist services?

Can you get the support of friends?

Do you know what you're trying to cope with? Perhaps displace that energy into something else that is less disordered. I know that's easier said than done.

I wish you strength.

More people than you can imagine and people you woukd never think of have some sort of eating disorder - whether it's bingeing or restricting or everything in between.

There's a lot of help out there

I hope you find the help you need x

When I worked in the care industry eating disorders amongst the elderly were very common.

I've yo-yo'd from one extreme to the other in the last 6 months.

Had a period of not eating - often for 3 or 4 days at a time - and lost shit loads of weight (I can stand to lose it) but have rediscovered my appetite since Christmas and put about a stone back on. But it's comfort eating, and need to find the balance of eating for the right reasons again.

So no, OP, you're not alone, even if the scale of the problem is variable between sufferers

My mindset is heading towards being anorexic..it is a control mechanism to one i feel I'm gonna lose control of it..dont think one ever fully recovers from anorexia

I was 17 when first diagnosed with anorexia..not sure what started it then not sure why now..back in day I was sectioned in a psychiatric unit watched 24/7.. gained weight to get out..recovered enough ..gained weight perhaps to much..now I feel its happening again..hence the diagnosis of atypical anorexia

It must be hard to grow up with people with this sort of illness.

I guess women from previous generations had much less control over their lives than we do - and restricting food is a form of exercising control the only way they could - amongst other things of course.

A lifetime if disordered behaviour is almost impossible to change - but I have seen younger people overcome it and start living.

Have you spoken to your gp, they mate be able to refer you? Or a specialist counsellor?

It’s nothing to be ashamed of, really it isn’t

I go days without eating much or anything at all and then I'll binge on junk food for a couple.

I just don't feel like eating much usually and if I do it's nothing healthy

You're not alone OP. I've battled on and off for nearly 19years. I agree, I don't think you ever fully recover. I use food as a coping mechanism too. I lose my appetite when I'm stressed or things are going wrong. My family and my closest friends are aware so they keep an eye because I don't always notice it kicking in, I'm lucky I have a support network. I can't imagine how hard it is without one. There are charity's and places around that you can reach out to.

I'm not sure how much help it will be but my inbox is always open if you want to talk

Very interesting as I have never heard of Atypical anorexia but after a quick Google search I can relate to this. I have bizarre eating habits which I usually blame on working nights and it is so easy to hide now that I live alone. Will certainly be following this thread closely.

You're not alone OP. I've suffered with eating disorders, on and off, since my late teens. At the moment I'm healthy, but it's something I have to constantly be conscious of as the behaviours and thoughts can so easily return.

I hope this thread at least helps you realise you aren't alone xx

OP. you are not alone and anorexia is not a phase, it is a lifetime mental illness that, if not supported, can be fatal. That you are talking about it on a public forum is just wonderful. All help is good help but you need to value and help yourself as well.

D talking. An ex of mine was sectioned at a young age for 3 years and when I knew her it was a rollercoaster of sorting it/not sorting it. so lots of experience here.

Use any resources you can to help. the charity BEAT is worth looking up and contacting.

As has been said before. mailbox open
