Of the 10 people where i work i was the only one who voted in the local election.
2 (21/22 year olds) did not even know there was an election. 2 were vaguely aware and 5 couldn’t give a fuck about it.
Of course all 9 will at various times moan about how bad things are followed by what they think the solution is but that there is nothing they can do about it. |

Not dreadful though. 44% turnout in my area.
The winning candidate was chosen by 19% of the electorate which is a travesty. |

I knew, but almost forgot.. I went out at 9pm in the horizontal rain and hail 
We had three votes - one of them has changed how our council will be run, so very glad i got off my ass and went out
I do think however, that people should be able to vote online, we'd have much greater response
Seen a priceless quote attributed to Hartlepool congratulating the Cons on providing 6 foodbanks, as there weren't any under labour |

I agree about voting online. I expect that once they can assure security they'll do it ....... I mean ffs... I bank and get vaccinated and drs treatments online ...... why not vote |

Yes and yes, but I do know a few that have completely lost faith in politics and can't see the point in voting as all the parties are shit.
I did try pointing out they should just vote for the less shit, otherwise nothing will ever change, but I still don't think they bothered in the end. |

Yes and yes.
Even though I sometimes wonder the difference between parties. If I'm unsure I'll look how often my representative actually gets off their arse to vote, and how they voted for things important to me. It's surprising how often some don't vote. |

I do exactly the same, my previous parliament representative, barely turned up to vote and I couldn't see what he actually did. So voted for someone else who is actually doing more work. I may not totally agree with everything they vote on but at least they're working. |

Many local people even said on FB that "Well if they're the only ones bothered to campaign, they're the only ones who deserve a vote", which, especially at a local level, feels sadly easy to justify. |

I agree on both accounts; I vote for the party (by and large ) that represents my values. I also think there are some very energetic people at grassroot level who are trying to make a difference. |

That's the theory, but I can't go along with that anymore. If they take Tory money, they infrastructure... they are taking their obnoxious, illegal government too, thank you very much.
Our councillor is also an opportunistic prick IMHO... Trying to be a little politician, pretending to care, especially around election times... |

But even if you knew there was a vote taking place there has been little to no canvassing (that I have seen in my little corner of the world).
If people want to reavh the disaffected voters then they need to be crwayive with how they get their message out there.

OMFG I detest that premise. If you pay the appropriate taxes expected of you, and abide by the laws of your country then hell yes you can complain about the government. Ticking a box so that the other party wins with a majority of 4732 rather than 4731... That matters far less than being a good citizen in general. As much as I ALWAYS vote, have canvassed and even attended the EU election counts in 2019, I fully believe that 15 minutes picking litter on your street has a far larger impact on society than a private tick in a box. |

I knew there was an election going on.
Unusually for me (in fact almost unheard of, the other time was when I didn't know I was eligible, lol) I didn't vote. I was unexpectedly sick as a dog. I could barely get out of bed. |

Yes and Yes and i took a pen too but tried to go out out the same door i came into the hall through and needed direction to follow the one way system.i had four votes, a bumper one this time.
I always get a polling card to remind me too - if you are not on the electoral roll i assume you wont get one so i guess that is how some are oblivious to the local elections. |

Voter apathy seems to have been high this time. I'm so glad I voted as my candidate was a shock win against a Tory in a safe seat constituency with the party machine behind them. I know my candidate and I know how hard they work for their constituents and am thrilled at the result. Every vote counts. |

I find it amazing how low turnout is for elections.
For example Liverpool mayor the turnout was 30.51%.
That means the majority of eligible voters, 69%, can’t be arsed.
I don’t get it myself, especially when it’s a vote like a city / regional mayor, who does/will have powers and decision making abilities that can affect your day-to-day life.
What are other peoples thoughts?

Well they have the final say on the councils budget. So multi-million pound decisions in large urban authorities

Canterbury constituency had always been Conservative since its formation in 1918. Julian Brazier was elected Tory MP in 1987 in a safe seat where they could have put up Gary Glitter or any other paedophile and they would have got in.
In 2017 the light was seen and the right wing religious nutter was given the boot and Rosie Duffield was elected for Labour.
Now Rosie isn’t the greatest MP but she is a hell of a lot better than any Tory and she got an increased majority when re-elected in 2019. |

Its this type of thinking / mentality that will see little change.
I voted for the Green candidate.
I don’t agree with everything they stand for however much of what he wants locally i agree with and he was at the polling station and was prepared to engage with me.
I did sense that he was part of the political gravy train but less so than the other candidates, best of a bad bunch.
He came second around 100 votes shy of the Tory which was good going. Next time maybe the Lib Dem’s and Labour will vote tactically to oust the Tory.
The previous Tory councillor committed suicide rather than face charges of sexual harassment and misconduct and yet we still get another blue suited gangster. |

Yes, and took my son for his first time voting.
Proud of an old friend for winning and another strong female in our area.
Unfortunately lost out for my particular local.
Also was the police crime commissioner vote, don't know who got that yet. |

Like all political representation and power votes, it doesn't make much of a difference in the end. You are either trading one shitshow for another, or no change at all. You just hope the shitshow you vote for is a little more tolerable than the others.
Majority dont have that hope, and therfore zero fucks, trust and even motivation to do so, it has been sapped out of them. I honestly do not blame anyone for just switching off to all things political in the modern day, regardless of outcome, things won't ever be in a good place for most people. |
