The population of buffalos in the Grand Canyon will be partially slaughtered and authorities have started a raffle to pick ten lucky hunters to shoot the buffs.

Over 45O00 entries. What does that tell you?

So long as the money raised goes to some kind of buffalo charity and the meat is put to good use... Don't have a problem with it. Its no different to farming.

Apparently there's a limit to the size you can shoot and you have to be able to take it off site by hand. No pa k animals or cars.

I'd want to check that the winners were able to make a clean, quick kill. Otherwise as a meat eater I can't object.

It tells me that there are a lot of people who like to hunt. That isn't news to me.

Its America and loads of people hunt there, lots of this bison group are culled outside of the park boundaries already, the raffle is for the right to hunt inside the park which is why it's attracted a lot of people

Buffalo are huge, fantastic meat and amazing animals. Ideally everyone should get their meat this way.

its old fashioned hunting.

no cars or vehicles allowed to help like the lady above said.

the numbers are strong and because of this it has become a problem for the surrounding environment.

its not a case of turning up and shooting everything in sight. there are rules, marshalls and you most likely will be in a group with one of them marshalls or appointed observer.

these things are big, really big. its sad they are having to do it, but also i suppose its being done in a controlled way and shows whatever programme is in place to protect the numbers is working.

"Do wolves not control the population?

Bison are not indigenous to the Grand Canyon region hence the increase to the population

Incidentally, it has to be an organised "cull" as, by law, hunting is not allowed in US National Parks

Wolves are not making a dent at all in the population. Mostly spring time with the newborns. Same as coyotes where we live. The generally go after the fawns.

It's sad people don't hunt anymore. The deer population here is too big to sustain them. Seen 29 deer mostly yearling in a field just lay down and die.

What? How? Just lay down and die? Seriously?! I'd get it if they had a niche food source that could become scarce if over populated but deer must eat grass and vegetation

It tells me too many buffalo have been shot.

It also tells me one of your zeroes is a letter O.

That Americans still don't know the difference between buffalo - which they don't have - and bison - which they do.

It is a surprisingly low number, perhaps hunting for fun is dying out there.

Essex Tom has had a restless night thinking and worrying about this. US is a massive place with lots of open land. Can't they just shoo them somewhere else like Arizona or Texas and let these mighty beasts roam in peace
