That you hadn't really thought about.

I know it's pretty fucking obvious since 9/11 was 2001, but it's only just dawned on me that all of the rescue dogs are now deceased. It was just a very sobering moment that gave me a proper throat lump and damp eye.

Animals are amazing.

Do you have any tales of animal heriocs?

Are these dogs or just any animals ? If it’s dogs I’m a sucker for them I would feel sad knowing a dog lost it’s life during 9/11

Dogs are our angels

Have you seen the story of Balto? The sled dog who trekked across ice to collect the typhoid vaccine for his village

His story called Togo is on Disney+

I try and show my dog videos of dogs doing amazing things! He thinks sitting on my coffee licking his bollox is enough to impress me.

All of the rescue dogs that saved lives etc during 9/11, the last one died in 2016, although I'd be shocked if there were none that lost their lives during the rescue mission.

I've not seen it. I have a hard time seeing them do such amazing things. It's almost like their strength and beautiful nature is so powerful It's overwhelming.

I know that sounds pretty sappy.

Not a tale of heroism but an appreciation of my dog.

Never have I had a human greet me how he does. I could nip to the shop and when I return he'll run around the yard barking, i think it translates as "you're home, you're home, I've missed you"

He knows when I'm irritated or upset and he'll jump up beside me, plant two feet on my leg and lick my face trying to cheer me up.

He's the most vocal dog I've met, not barking though I describe it more as throat singing.

I'd like a Fab social just for dog lovers please !

One of my beloved former dogs once ran off then came home on her own across an army shooting range in use then two busy roads. Pretty heroic I thought.

I created him a sensory garden yesterday, raised planters at head height for him to be able to sniff them, he particularly likes the lemon balm and lavender

They are incredible, I know other animals can be tamed and get used to human contact but not like dogs and how they get so tuned into humans is mind blowing.

That's lovely, mine would possibly try peeing on said planters. There's a few feral cats and foxes that pass through my yard so he has plenty to sniff

Dogs are truly amazing animals...unconditional love, always there when your feeling down, always there when your in the kitchen haha! I watched some thing on line about America's service dogs...proper put a tear in my eyes...they used to put to sleep all service dogs after serving the Country, now when they retire from service they can be brought back to America and be reunited with the soldier that they served with...truly emotional scenes when being reunited together. Dogs....quite an unbelievable animal and I miss my dog terribly still after 11 years of her dying but I had 16 1/2 years of fun with her

I do scent therapy with him, he is quite anxious and interestingly will always choose the chamomile or lavender, I notice he is a lot calmer for a few days after

If he's feeling under the weather I will use the scent therapy to help me detect what is wrong as different herbs he chooses will signify the issues.

My dog just saved me from a slice of pizza that was obviously intent on attacking me...that's about as heroic as he gets

My old dog did actually save me from a guy who I believe was either trying to attack me or steal her...I was walking her at night and as I got to the side of a car the door flew open and a man that had obviously been slouched down in the seat jumped out. She put herself between me and him and went into full defence mode. He got back in the car and drove off with no lights on, which is what makes me believe he wasn't up to anything pleasant

2 Westies, bred from them. When sge was carrying went out for a walk, he defended her against very large German Shepherd. As a whirling dervish of white flew through the air it never know what hit it.

Had him when I was a young teenager for 20 years, his ashes for 22 years until ex threw them out rather than give them back to me.

Our last border collie stayed with me when I get back from radiation therapy, she never left my side for three weeks.

She was an emotional therapy dog, without ever going trained. She knew what to do.

Girl dog saved me.

If I didn't have the responsibility of making sure she was looked after and loved I'd have taken my own life. Truth is, I simply didn't trust anyone else to love her as much as I did. I knew without me she would get anxious, even at her favourite place with her bestie dog buddies she would have enough and tell me when she wanted to go home. The only person she would 100% settle with other than me was my son, and he moved out nearly 4 years ago now.

I lost girl dog in September 2018. I want another but can't offer them the time they'd deserve.

Funny how we give them nicknames isn't it. She was girl dog and my son is boy child. There isn't a boy dog or a girl child so no need for me to define them that way. My lad is 21 this year so think it's high time for an update.

That's amazing! Instinct for her but thank goodness she was there!

Most heroic thing mine has ever done was round up the pot smoking kids in the park, he was off lead and suddenly shot off into the bushes, I ran to find him and could hear high pitched yapping, he had four youths cornered and stopped when I approached, I was like alright PC keeks, calm your tits. Luckily the lads were fine and thought he was funny...I did not. Note to self, keep him on a lead

Random but humorous, my granny's collie learnt how to turn a key in a door. My granny lives in the country so the key was always left in the backdoor. We discovered she could do this because after my granny collected me from school we returned to her house to find the dog had let herself in and was eating the lasagne left on the kitchen counter.

Oh lovely, you did the one act of true love you could do for her but I know what you mean.

My boy had epilepsy and was kept under control for a fair few years, but the dosages of meds needed to be adjusted and mixed with other meds to regulate his seizures...I could see his condition deteriate but we tried to regulate him again, I took a summer sabbatical from work to care for him and took him to hydrotherapy each week and each week we'd stop at the local beauty spot where he he would just sit and watch the world go by with ice cream.

He had a massive fit in the October and didn't regain consciousness. I remember the vet ringing me at 2am to say his breathing was laboured, I didn't wait for him to ask me and I just got in the car drove round there.

My boy now is 6 and I dread it already.

My beabull saved his daschund brother from a bear. It's amazing how they are protective of one another. The bear chased the daschund and our beabull was not having it. They are fantastic dogs. Super protective of their loved ones.

The family dog can sense when my son is going hypoglycaemic and will not leave him, she's an amazing dog. Love her to bits.

C’s dog is a Sproodle and I’ve never met a more empathetic dog. It’s like she reads your every emotion before you display it...I honestly feel dogs can feel a lot and so I have a big affinity with dogs...

I suspect that’s because Fluke is one of my favourite books...

"I'd like a Fab social just for dog lovers please !

One of my beloved former dogs once ran off then came home on her own across an army shooting range in use then two busy roads. Pretty heroic I thought."

Was it dinner time though

I like seeing relationships in the animal kingdom which defy instinctual logic.

Reminds me of a documentary I watched that had a snake befriend his dinner

"Dogs are our angels

Have you seen the story of Balto? The sled dog who trekked across ice to collect the typhoid vaccine for his village

His story called Togo is on Disney+ "

Togo was the lead Dog of the sled pack that did the largest part and most dangerous section of the trek. Balto was the lead Dog of the pack that got it the rest of the way.

Unfortunately Balto got the fame and is remembered and known, Togo was left to the small print in the history books

Aww I didn't know that, thank you!

Amazing dogs nonetheless and such a beautiful story.

"Dogs are truly wonderful companions and help us in so many different ways. I really miss my girl. She had such a sweet soul and I will be with her when my time is up.

Aw lovely, so sorry to hear that. How long ago did you lose her?

I have my last boy's ashes still, he passed 11 years ago and I'm still not ready to let him go

It was 4 years ago and although it was in her best interests I still feel like a murderer every time I walk past the vets. I still have her ashes and I want them

to be scattered with mine at one of our favourite walking spots.

It is so very difficult to let go isn’t it x

Bless your heart. My girl loved being in the campervan and just watching the ducks at the local park. The last morning with her I just sat in the van singing songs to her and holding her close. Breaks my heart to this day. I am sure you’ll have many happy times with your boy. Savour every one. Xx

Sounds like a perfect last day for her, believe me she felt nothing but love from that point on. What a wonderful life she had with you.

Reading your post has made me feel emotional, sending you all the love and hugs ? "

Thank you. Sending love and hugs back

Many of the search and rescue dogs used at the site of the Lockerbie crash died within a year as a result of inhaling aircraft fuel.

"That you hadn't really thought about.

Yes I have! He was my hero anyway

My old bear of a dog Inkerman, in 2010 while working in the Middle East, and a vehicle move was involved in an ied incident. Not serious blast like lots of guys got out there. But I and two others were lightly fragged. I took a few small pieces up my sides and my arms l, and a couple of pieces in my cheek. At home while recovering he never left my side was always there when I winced if I lived to quick. And was always looking at me when I woke up. When I’m 2017 when he need to be go to sleep one last time, I held him in my arms at hone while the vet did what was needed. It was the hardest thing I’ve had to do... but to hold him and comfort him while it was happening and to whisper I’ll see him again to play catch when he finally gave up. Was the one last thing I could show him fir all his years of loyalty.

Sorry if that was a little more than you bargained fir OP, but he was a great dog.

Somewhere in Co. Down

When my dad got ill and was in hospital I was looking after his dog and suddenly one night she jumped on my bed and started howling .She was really distressed and as I was rubbing her my phone rang it was the hospital telling us to get there asap sadly my dad had passed by the time I got there. He had taken a turn at 3.30 which was the exact time she had started howling. She lived with me for 8 more years until she passed away and I after that night I never heard her howl again.

Not sure if anyone seen our post a few weeks back when our beloved 15 ye old Westy crossed the Rainbow Bridge .Rosie had her favourite toy and always put it back in her bed before it was time to go upstairs. Since she passed our little Chihuahua Elsa puts Rosie's toy in her bed before going upstairs. It's too heavy for her to pick up so she nudges it there with her nose. It's so heartwarming.

"My dog just saved me from a slice of pizza that was obviously intent on attacking me...that's about as heroic as he gets

"

I had to laugh at this. My dog has saved me from some cookies on the side - Clearly when I left the room she thought it best to eat them before they added another inch to my waistline - see, thoughtful!

I'd love a social for all us dog lovers!! We could all bring our furry friends and go walkies!

Hefty Hideaway

As some of you know I’m an absolute fool for naughty Patterdale terriers. Little shits but as loyal as they come. I had a mother and son duo and they spent every second together.

They escaped one day when the good ok’ Blackpool wind took a fence panel without me realising. We realised pretty quickly that they’d gone but the little buggers had scarpered.

On their travels mum got hit by a car and the little brown dog followed his nose all the way home and knocked on the door.

He dragged us back out to follow his nose back to mum who had a big shock and few bruises but nothing serious thank goodness. He’s a little hero. Just petrified of traffic these days.

Never had a dog of my own but a Friend of mine had a Labrador that used to Wildcamp with us, he loved mountains, camping and swimming, he’s in so many photos at the summits of 3 peaks like one of the gang.

He always insisted on sleeping in my tent and would usually sleep on me, he would eat anything he could find , our food while being cooked out the pan , rotten dead sheep in the hills, he would creep up and steal food straight out your hands while we were eating , he even once stole a sandwich in cling film from a backpack and managed to open and eat it. You always had to be in your guard if you had food. He stayed with me once for a week and learned to play swing-ball, loved it. In the mornings he’d bark to be let out go straight over to the swing ball grab a bat in his mouth and sit there looking all sad waiting for me to come and play. We all miss him

I used to help train SAR dogs and assistance dogs and have seen numerous heroic incidents.

Epilepsy assistance dogs can predict the onset of an event an hour or more in advance and diabetic dogs can also predict changes in blood sugar levels.

They are, my friend works in rescue and rehome. It's often because the dogs are highly strung and younger children like to grab. There are exceptions to the rule though.
