"It's the people that merge late that cause the jam. If people merge with the flowing traffic the traffic won't stop flowing. "
Yes, which is fine in theory, but no one in this country wants to give way to anyone else and wants to use those 750 yards - because they is entitled, innit - and hence why we have the problem |

Not me fella, I’m using those 750 yards people may look at me like I’m an absolute selfish idiot but I don’t care
I DO NOT CARE
and just to prove my point I’m not using any punctuation |

"Use the whole lane, exactly the same as you use a slip road to join the motorway.
The problem comes from people who merge immediately then decide to police the lane themselves. "
Exactly this! |

This is not about roadworks but driving relevance, many many moons ago i remember if on dual carriageway or motorway and 7 or 8 cars where seeing a slow vehicle in the lane ahead the first vehicle pulled out to overtake followed by the rest in order which meant no slowing down but nowadays if you dont move to next lane miles before overtaking said slow vehicle it seems nowadays the 8th vehicle speeds up to overtake thus the 7 cars in front have to brake thus slowing everyone down, much better in the old days, lol. |

I was recently in the position of being the one in the land that has to merge. It actually worked really well, everyone was patient, the open lane drivers let us merge alternately and I noticed that the car next to me when I joined the queue was the one in front of me when I merged. It was all very civilised seeing as we say there for half an hour |

"Zipper" merging is pretty culturally common in other countries. It makes so much more sense to cooperate in using as much of the width of the road as possible, and stop a single line snaking back and making it all suck. But if it's not culture in the UK, it becomes problematic when everyone else refuses to do the same. |
